Software / Some Dosbox Observations & Tricks

This works great!

Dosbox used to occasionally crash on me when I used the cancel key, and the zaurus would return to the Applications screen without releasing its memory.
Then I would have to reboot to clear the memory.

I have used the home key several times, and it has worked perfect every time.

Thanks for this very useful tip.
Glad that it was useful. My DOSbox starts with a batch file that uses a "pause" command at one point.

Using the Cancel key would frequently allow an "extra" key press to trip the pause unintentionally. Since Home only needs to be pressed once, the pause works as it was intended every time using Home instead of Cancel.

Cxx0 Hardware / C760 Charging Problem
« on: November 05, 2006, 04:29:38 pm »
Off topic, but just in case any hardware experts read this thread & have suggestions:

One of my C860s has a repeated problem with the screen back light failing due to one cable connection.

The back light will, after some amount of machine use, gradually get harder & harder to keep on. Eventually it will fail entirely.

I discovered, by trial & error, that removing the back of the screen half of the clam shell and "reseating" the "right" end (with the C860 clam shell closed, laid flat with the opened area upper most  & the hinge away from oneself) of the cable nearest the hinge corrected the problem. For a while. Repeatedly.

Looks like Sharp made this unit with this cable just a little too short & that opening & closing the clam shell gradually pulls that connector & cable end appart till the connection fails.

Anyone have suggestions for a longer term fix?

ASIDE from Crazy Glue, That is - LOL!

BTW - the other C860 has never had this problem. And the problem machine went back to Sharp Japan, via Dynamism, while still under warrantee, but Sharp claimed that they could not, ever, replicated the problem. After having the unit in their hands for about 3 full months. Even though the failure happened again immediately on receipt of the machine back fro Dynamism.

LOL!

Florida / Miami-Dade? SHow of hands, please?

I used to live in Broward County (1948 - 2000),  does that count??
Might as well - G. Most of the folks in Broward today seem to have moved there from Miami-Dade after Andrew - LOL. And most of west Broward has been well & truly "Kendallized" so ...... its all SE Florida, just one big, long urban strip. Kinda like in the cyberpunk sf stories.

I'm an FSU alumna.  Go, Seminoles!
You & my friend Paul would mix it up then - LOL. HE is a UF alumnus & a rabid Gator fan. Now, me - I did attend UM for a while at first but matriculated from good old MDCC then from FIU. First full class of 1974. Team? WHAT team? LOL.

Heh, I'm a lady so I guess from my weak Latin skills,  it's "alumna".   :D

Your Latin is probably better then mine. I don't even know the plural for Zaurus (Zaurii?).

I lived in Miami for 20 yrs, West Kendall Miami baby!
name : raj
age : 50 mango seasons (my tree bears fruit twice a year)
day job : Electrical Systems Engineer - Boeing (I'm leaving in Seattle now)
packing : Sl-C1000

That is rather ironic. An old high school classmate & friend was just over for a visit earlier this morning. He lived many years in Seattle & worked for Boeing there. Left Boeing several years ago & living off his investments since then. Moved back down here earlier this year to cohabitate with another of our old high school friends.

How long ago did you leave the "metropolitan" Kendall area? Traffic gets more gnarley here every day! Technically I am in Westwood Lakes, BTW.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Dosbox For Z

hi, Bob:
Can you compile dosbox natively on your Z?
Have not gotten it to work yet, Chen. Been a rough year - LOL!

Have just been using my old HP200LX instead rather then trying to run the DOS apps on one of the C860s now.

If yes, would you like to do the following:
in bios_keyboard.cpp replace
{ 0x273b, 0x273a, none, 0x27f0 }, /* ;: */
with
{ 0x273a, 0x273b, 0x273b, 0x273a }, /* :; */
I have that filed away now in working notes. THANKS!

This is what Meanie told me to enable the key ':'
Thanks.

Thanks to both you & Meanie. Sorry for the delay in reply. The window AC that cools my bed room - computer room complex died & it took a while to get a suitable replacement & install it. Hard to work the keyboard when its 92 degrees & 88% relative humidity - LOL!

Maybe what he meant is that http://focv.com/ipkg/ seems to go to a page in Japanese without any links to ipkgs.
It looks like a "404" message, doesn't it?

Probably it's not such a bad idea - to create ROM backups for every model and main ROMs? The question is where to host them.
If you find someone who will keep them available for public download, I'll make clean C860 NANDs of systems people want to try. I'm on 53.3K POTS, however, so my bandwidth / speed are limited.

Have you tried other browsers?  Do they work?
Will if the problem happens again. I have been running this Opera as primary browser since long before becomming forum member (if it works, leave it alone .. LOL). I usually run full security. No Java, cookies, popups etc. Gibson Reasearch "full stealth" rateing. Set cookies on in Quick Prefs mode if / when I am going to login here.

I have the most recent FireFox to use when sites exclude Opera, but only if I absolutely have gotta. I like Opera & dislike sites that are "browser specific" so ...

What ever was going on seems to have gone away. Happens again, I'll FireFox to check. It looked like cookies kept getting wiped, but I can't figure out *how*.

Sigh.

No problem here.
Sounds like your cookie settings got changed.
Did you check the "Remember Me" box when you logged in?
That (cookies) was my first thought, but I turn them on using Opera's Quick Preferences before I login here. Checked & everything appeared the same.

I have been unchecking "Remember Me" all along (particularly since Opera security is set to wipe all cookies when the browser closes).

Whatever was going on was extremely intermittant. Came & went several times during that one session.

Weird - intermutant? LOL

For example - this session (so far) I have been able to Preview without becomming Guest again.

Maybe the problem is gone; hope so.

Mine is fine... I think it is user error... LOL j/k

Late
(G - LOL). I would settle for user error, ISO, if I could only figure out what is the cause. Nothing is being changed when it happens. nothing in the browser setup HAS been changed in ages ("if it works - leave it alone!")

The problem started abruptly very shortly before I started the thread.

To do these replies, I have had to login each time. (sigh)

no problems here, what browser are you using?
Opera 7.22 build 3221.

Same as I've been using all along.

Seems intermittant.

And, yes, cookies have been allowed the entire time.

This JUST started a short while ago.

I log in.

I change pages.

I am back to GUEST again.

Even if I log in & immediately refresh the page I get GUEST.

Makes it almost impossible to use the member functions.

I am not even certain if THIS is going to post.

Still have my copy of Joseph J Carr's "Z80 Users Manual" way up high on one of the book shelves .... right next to about a dozen or so books on the care & feeding of the ZX-81.

Wonder if that old hardware will still run? LOL!
