Security and Networking / Wireless Card -- Please Help

Hello Everybody,

I have a Zaurus SL-C860 with Cacko rom on it. I would like to buy a Wireless LAN card but was wondering if you guys could please recommed any.

I not a newbie at this and do not know any code hacking and stuff like that. I was wondering if you could suggest a simple card that the Zaurus would automatically detect without much hassel.

I would really appreciate some suggestions.

Thanks everybody and have a GREAT day

I pretty much have the same setup you have: C860 running Cacko and I have a SMC EZ Connect (SMC2642W). I plugged it in and it worked right off the bat and has been consistently for about a year now.

I hope that helps.

General Discussion / Is there a new CXXX coming soon?

The problem is that Sharp works against itself. While the Sharp development team are trail blazers IMHO, the Sales and Marketing team (responsible for the US and European markets) are trend followers. When I think of them, inept comes to mind....

Sharp has consistantly misjudged the wants and needs of the US handheld market. You can go back to the orginal Sharp Zaurus SL-XXX series. It was an excellent unit with features way ahead of it's time, with a fanatical group of owners (much like us), with forums, webpages and support groups (because Sharp's support also sucked). SHARP chose to not share the SDK of that Zaurus and so no significant 3rd party software could be developed. As a result, sales of other palmtops and handhelds over took those of the Zaurus and it was discontinued.  Although Sharp compensated for that early SKD mistake by introducing Linux based open sourced machines (which was a nice move), they again got it wrong by not selling the the C-XXX series here and in Europe. They got it in their head that the US market would not want clam shell units, I guess because of the popularity of the Palm Pilots a few years back. Another example is the Sharp Mobilon, which was just a knee jerk reaction to the budding Windows CE market. Sharp would have been much better served to continue developing the exsisting devices (The Sharp Zaurus SL-XXX being one) which was already established and brand recognizable, Lord knows they had the talent, but instead chose to discontinue the Zaurus and jump on the CE band wagon with a CE machine of their own.

So I recognize Sharp for what they are - Great at hardware and development and terrible at sales, support and marketing. If they would just listen to some of the great suggestions they have had over the years from owner and the likes of forums like this one, they would have got it right a long time ago, the development talent is there!

General Discussion / Who are you and where are you from?
« on: September 19, 2004, 10:24:14 pm »
Wow! I have been away for a few months (very busy) and just read this thread. This is great! So many Zaurus users does ones heart good.

Rod, 45yrs old. I live in Columbus, OH. with my wife of 22 yrs and kids. (I have lived in DC, Charlotte NC and Newport News VA.)
Most recently a Director of IT for a major communications co. Now doing IT Consulting for a business my brother and I own.

Put plainly, I love technology! I have it all, 4 or 5 PCs, a couple of laptops, handhelds, palmtops and PDAs. I have had just about every major handhelp and palmtop at one time or another. My  favorites were the original Zaurus ZR-5800 (still have) and the Psion 5MX (still have it too). But I love my C-860 (see below for accessories)!!

I use it for everything. My favorite apps are: StageOne outliner, KO/PI, KA/PI, PDF viewer, VNC and now textmaker. With my wireless card in I can VNC into my server and control it or browse  the web or check my email from outside on my patio - that is very cool. I love to go to Panera Bread and work there with my C860 and their wireless service (free). With the Z, I can work from anywhere there is a wireless connection! I don't know of anything else as powerful...

Stubear,
Thanks, it worked like a charm but I had to go into the konsol and change permissions first on the opera.desktop file. And I did have to reboot.

Thanks again.

Software / Help with file associations
« on: July 13, 2004, 04:01:14 pm »
Does anyone know how to re-associate  a different program with a particular file type? Specifically, I have Cacko ROM installed which comes with the Opera web browser in addition to Netfonts.  I have installed and prefer to use Qpdf to view Adobe PDF files but I guess Opera is the default application for reading PDF files, so every time I try to read a PDF file throught the GUI, Opera pops up and tries to connect to the Internet, the problem is I want to use QPDF for viewing these file because it does a much better job with PDF files than Opera. Is there a way to get Qpdf to pop up instead of Opera? I would even be willing to uninstall Opera if that was the only way but I don't know how to do that properly either since it came on the ROM. Thanks in advance.

I have tried to get CUPS working on Cacko many months ago and failed, but you might want to check these packages out:

Thanks I will definitely check them out. But at first glance, none of them seem to be real, and complete solutions.

What I do on trips is bring along a CF or SD reader and borrow a PC when I need to print.

Yes that is what I am forced to do right now. I carry around a Jump Drive Trio http://www.lexar.com/dynamic-frameset_jd.h...ve/jd_trio.html
which works great, but it is a pain to have to find a free PC, transfer my document to the SD card and then put the SD card into the Jumpdrive and then put the jumpdrive into the PC and then bring up the document and print it... I would rather point my Z at the printer and hit ctl-P

OK, after find just the right software and ROM, I now have just about the perfect machine . I can go with out my laptop for most trips, except for one problem... I can't print from the Zaurus! I've searched through the site threads but I find little on the subject;

Has anyone figured out (or is working on) a way to print from the Zaurus? Most of the other good handhelds I've owned (all substandard to the Zaurus of course) had the ability to print directly from the infrared port to a printer that had an infrared port like the HP LJ 2100 for example.  Even the old Zaurus ZR8500 (totally different machine)  I owned could do this, But the new Zauri can't. I would even settle for a way to print wireless over an 80211b or g network, that would be great also. Are there no great minds working on this?

General Discussion / ROM choices, with a twist.

[Cacko - Very pretty, nice to use, but it suffers from the age old Sharp ROM problem of not letting you install most things to storage cards (well most things I tried anyway). Also libc2.2.2 based which is pretty old (I've got a load of stuff I compiled which needs 2.2.3 at least). I've had issues with my WiFi card for some reason.]

With all do respect lardman, I know your comments about the Cacko ROM were from your personal experience so I would like to offer my personal experiences as a counter. All the software I listed in my earlier post (that was not included in the ROM) is installed on my SD card except for one -can't remember which one. I use the SMC WIFI card and it worked the first time I plugged it in and everytime since then.

Can't debate with you on the other ROMS because I haven't used them and really don't intend to because CACKO is working so well. But I hear PDAxROM is unstable and openembedded /Opie has a limited software offering, as RJLadd pointed out, but I must admit it is hearsay only on those two ROMS because I havn't used them.

Software / SL-C860 Software/Sync Setup
« on: July 10, 2004, 10:48:24 am »
Ling,

I have a C-860 and used the same software and had no problem at all. Did you set up the sync options in the Zaurus? If you didn't, go to Settings/PC Link/  from the launch button in the Zaurus and select "PC LInk Setting" under "Mode Setting" and  "USB - I/O (default)" under the "Connection" section. Then you should be able to hit the "Sync Start" button there at the bottom (in the Zaurus) and the Syn should start.

Cxx0 General discussions / Where to buy a C7x0?
« on: July 09, 2004, 09:11:30 pm »
I boutht my c-860 from Dynamism. They are located in the US and import the unit. The great thing about them is, they warranty your unit and handle the logistics between Sharp-Japan and them if there is a problem, but you pay extra for the translation and the warranty they offer (about $200 extra). At the time I was gun shy about doing the conversion to English myself so I brought from them. But now that I know better, I wouldn't buy it from them if I was doing it all over. I would get the cheapest price I could find and immediately convert it to the Cacko ROM which is 100% English and works great!

General Discussion / ROM choices, with a twist.

I got my C-860 in May and struggled with the same question. Which ROM to use. Since I am a non-Linux/Unix person and not a programmer. I thought I could share a different perspective with you.

Like I said, I am not a Linux person but  I do consider myself very accomplished with Windows products. I also have a great deal of experience with all types of handhelds and palmtops. (I’ve practically used or owned most of them at one time or another.)

My needs were for a device that could replace my current Psion MX and my first love - the Zaurus ZR-5800. I also needed it to act as a stand in for my Laptop as much as possible. So I needed great PIM functionality, an array of productivity products, wireless, remote control, an easy interface with the look and feel of a mini-laptop.  I have found all those things with the Zaurus SL-C860 using the Cacko ROM. The ROM is rock solid in my opinion and comes with several software enhancements from the original ROM, which makes it much more useful. I can do everything I want on the unit, but print wirelessly to a network printer, or print any way for that matter (which I want to do desperately).Printing aside though, I think it’s the best out there right now. The way I see it the most important thing the ROM brings to the table is stability, flexibility and software compatibility. With the compliment of software I have now, I feel nothing is lacking but the ability to print. Once that is available (if ever), I will have a complete laptop to stand-in. Here are the key software titles I recommend to get the most out of the unit.

KDE-Pim/Pi  v.1.9.2       - (Great PIM software)
SatgeOne! v3.2.0       - Outliner
Tree!Explorer QT Plus       - Windows Style file Explorer (very nice)
Tree! TxtQt          - Text editor
QPDF2 v2.2.1           - PDF Viewer
Porta Base          - Easy to use Database
Opie Keypebble         - VNC viewer
qpe-alarmclock-advanced    - Alarm Clock w/multiple alarms
QKonsole          - Command line interface (included in ROM)
Handcom Word 1.6.0       - Word compatible editor (included in ROM)
Handcom Sheet       - Excel compatible editor (included in ROM
Kino2    v0.3 beta      - Media video player (included in ROM
TkcCard          - Flexible Database
Tkc Video         - Media video player
Media Player         - Media Player (included in ROM)
Opera 7.03         - Web Browser (included in ROM)
System Info         - System Status (included in ROM)

Software / A step ahead (Mail now integrated in KDE-Pim/Pi)
« on: July 07, 2004, 10:57:41 am »
Update - I was able to resolve the "other" phenomenon with the following simple proceedure.
I just went into KA/pi and "selected all" on all the contacts with "other" as all the contact numbers and Deleted them all.
I then went back into KA/pi (there were no contacts at this point). Re-imported the back-up CSV I had and voila! All my contacts were correct.

So for now, if you are going to install 1.9.2a, I would recommend exporting all your contacts into a CSV back-up before you begin.

Ok, I uninstalled version 1.9.1 and installed 1.9.2a to my Sandisk 512 SD card. Unlike before, the installation went seamless onto the SD card. But when I opened KA/PI I again had "Other" for all the contact numbers. Here is an example.  Like it was mentioned earlier, the numbers look fine in the exported card, but shows up as "others" in KA/PI. I also emailed them to you as you requested.
