Zaurus - pdaXrom / New Pdaxrom Release R197
« on: April 17, 2007, 12:34:02 pm »
Hi

I would like to say thank you to the developer team. But since 860 model is worst supported the last releases I went back to original japanese sharp rom 1.10 plus update to 1.40jp
You did a great job, though ...

This fits my needs better. I will miss emacs, but powermanagement is more important.
I can input japanese out of the box, a dictionary is included, sound is working, enough pim software is installed, the clock is exact and battery is charged without problems.

And I have to improve my japanese ; )

Never mind

Thanks to the developers for releasing this.

Yeah the APM issue is still not resolved. Looks like the something (APM?) makes the Z think that it is low on battery and shuts it off.

Also, turning it on is a problem, I'm not sure if I should use the 'Home' button or the 'Power' button-- I've tried both, but I cannot figure out which one actually works since I press both until it finally turns on.

The APM issue is fairly major and critical. I'm gonna go back to cacko I think, need my Zaurus usable on the move

I have r197 installed on 860 and haven't come across this issue.

ADDED: I used the u-boot in r121. Dunno if there is any difference from the one in r197.

Hi

I used the r121 to do an emergency boot and install 197

Latest pdaxrom with good apm support for c860 was kathrin beta1
I would be very cool to bring this functionality back

I cant believe that both accu packs are broken

Thank you for your efforts

Installing was fine. But charging battery and suspend on c860 is still broken, isnt it?
Yellow light is always off. Can charge from diagnostic menu (yellow light is on), but
dont know when to stop

What do I wrong? At boot time an error message about ac adaptor occurs.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Some Remarks About The Power Of Pdaxrom
« on: March 12, 2007, 01:24:49 pm »
Hi

First of all. I tried a lot of distributions on my C860. At the moment I use kathrin 1.1.0beta1, because the hardware works almost out of the box. I had problems with power management on newer releases and I should track down this some day. Anyway. pdaXrom is a real productivity booster.

I read about a new bootloader concept in newer versions some time ago that allows to boot different versions (like grub on my pc). This is a prerequisite for developers that use their Z every day and dont want to brick it

Is this usable on the C860? If so, I would like to start writing some scripts that fixes the most annoying typos in pdaXrom, fixes symlinks and replaces some of the busybox tools with real applications. There is enough space on 1 GB external card (sd or cf)
And you can get one for less than 30 bucks in each store

Because shell scripts look somehow strange for me, a ruby or python script could do the job.
We could provide scripts that specialize pdaXrom.

An example: I dont need much of the Window-Manager stuff. Even twm is okay for me. But I want to see emacs preinstalled, configured and running with useful shortcuts
So it fits my needs. Though I can do this per hand, I dont want to invent the wheel several times

Other people want to use pdaXrom for only playing chess or other games.
The next only hears music

And another one needs big size mail clients and web browsers

Lets have a real simple base system and write some scripts that do the rest
I think this is more important for the end user than getting new kernel features running

Any suggestions?
Enno

PS: English is not my native language. Could be hard to understand

Thanks, Enno.
A little update:
Alright, now XftGnuEmacs seems to compile with gtk... (Earlier on I tried to compile without gtk and it went through.)
It took me quite a bit of time to figure out what was going on.
Basically the tons of errors are due to the wrong pointers in many headers to the freetype, gtk, gdk and glib headers.
I just did a quick and dirty trick by making symlinks of all the required headers in  /opt/native/.../armv5tel-cacko-linux/include/
Now I can only wait for a few more hours to see what happens next ...
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=155970\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Oops. I forgot to mention the symlink problem. Its half a year ago I compiled emacs. So I didnt remember. I use planner-mode, too. Changed some of the special keys to get the full power of shortcuts. I also started a translation of the planner manual into german. 25 percent done so far. Hard work, less time

On the other hand, I dislike some planner internals. It should not have data doubling. Remember DRY-principle. But working with is fun. This tool is great.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / New Emacs 23 W/ Xft And Cjk Support!

Hello there,
...
Also I've got a couple of questions:
1) For now I simply make it in one giant package. But it's a monstrous 80MB with tons and tons of scripts and modes (the .el). The binaries themselves are not so small either -- roughy 30MB.
So my question is: what would be the best way to break this giant build down into several smaller ones?

2) Still wondering if scim/gcin/uim can work in this Emacs build. Please tell me if you got it working!

Strange. Despite the forum upload limit is 50MB, I just can't get the package (around 30MB) uploaded successfully. After the forum seems to finish uploading my package the window flashes to the forum main page leaving the post unmodified.
So for the time being please use this link:
http://www.sharebigfile.com/file/108645/em...mv5tel-ipk.html

Hi

use the split tool. Its in the coreutils package. Should be installed on every Z

User can cat then together after downloading
Should work like this.

split -b XXXXX bigfile.zip
cat bigfile01 bigfile02 bigfile03 > bigfile.zip

Good work. I am using beta1. Let me know if edict works

Bye

Hi

[/quote]

Great. Thanks. So could you show me how to compile with gtk enabled?
I was building it again for around 3 hours (still make bootstrap). Things seem to go well (without gtk but stilll with x). Unfortunately i left my PSP power pack at home and the make sucked up almost all the juice... So gotta go home tonight and start over again. This time will do it with overclocking.
[/quote]

I did it with padXrom Version 1.1.0beta1

check out emacs-cvs sources. Then ...

If I remember right a

./configure --prefix=/mnt/card/local/ --with-x-toolkit=gtk
make
make install

did the job

It takes a long time!

Hello

I compiled emacs-cvs by myself and did a set-input-method japanese inside emacs.
After that I can use hiragana, katakana, kanji in emacs buffer. emacs edict works fine.
You need a japanese font, too!

One problem (bug) exists. Some characters disappear if I move the cursor around. If the cursor is again over the character it appears again. Strange. I use the gtk version of emacs. But same for other toolkits.
On PC same works very well without the above mentioned bug

Hope this info helps

Nice! That should work as it doesn't seem to use any qtopia stuff. I will try it out after I'm done with my trial build.

[EDIT]
hmmm ... seems i was getting too excited. His pdf readme says the x11 version depends on X/Qt. Perhaps the terminal mode still works. let's see ...

My favourite tool is emacs. And I use it on linux console without X.
Sometimes I start X if I need japanese language support, but not often.

Emacs can do all this for you
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hi Enno,

this is a very interesting approach! I'd like to learn more about it!
Does emacs also have outliner capabilities?
Is dealing with XML and HTML easy?

Do you do email on the Zaurus? with mutt?

daniel
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=147316\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hi Daniel

There are at least two outline modes

[a href=\"http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/OutlineMode]http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/OutlineMode[/url]
http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/AllOut

Planner uses AllOut-Mode.

For other modes check the emacs wiki, too

http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/XmlMode

http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/MarkupModes

Mutt is a very good email client. But at the moment I use emacs-vm. Check here

http://www.wonderworks.com/vm/

Everything is well documented.

Hello

Four rules I learned (the hard way) about using pda is:

Use a text interface, it is less time and power consuming
Use the same tools every day
Make context switches as easy and rarely as possible
Use well documented and maintained software

My favourite tool is emacs. And I use it on linux console without X.
Sometimes I start X if I need japanese language support, but not often.

Emacs can do all this for you

Word Processing: Emacs
SpreadSheet: never needed one
Browsers: emacs-w3m, dillo
Email: emacs-vm
FTP: emacs ange-ftp
Text Editor: emacs
PIM: emacs-planner
PDF: xpdf, pdf2txt
Dictionaries: steak in emacs (german-english-german), edict in emacs (japanese-german)
IM: emacs-erc
Media Players: emacs-emms
Graphics: not useful on pda
File Managers: emacs-dired
Terminal:  emacs-shell
Other Tools: too much to mention. check emacs-wiki

Emacs is not good for impressing your friends. Its good for impressing you.

I want to create a short movie about emacs on zaurus. Feel free to contribute ideas. How do you use emacs?

Have a nice day

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Sl-c860 Beta1 2 Gb Sd Card Driver Backport
« on: October 16, 2006, 03:24:28 am »
Hello

I think the beta1 is the most stable and most usable version for older zaurus models like
c750/c860. I dont want to upgrade to another one. But I heard of a working sd card driver for 2 gb cards. It works for more recent zaurus models but there is no backport to my model. Is anybody working on that?? Would be cool to have this in beta1 for c860

Thanks

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Need Help With Japanese Localization
« on: September 25, 2006, 01:57:33 pm »
Hello

I dont know how to set up japanese environment in pdaxrom. Because the X11 stuff work with only minor bugs I used that before. But these minor bugs are annoying. Characters sometimes disappear as I type. Now I want to use japanese on linux console. What is the best font for such an setup? How can I use it? Are there some people from japan around reading this?

Many thanks
