Most of the crashs i have encountered can be fixed by going into the settings menus, apps, airmail and then in hte permissions option, enabling access to contacts and k9mail remote

as far as i can tell it is not set to prompt for these permissions, does not set them up on install and exits when an error is encountered

if you dont do this youc can pu tthe app in a state where it always crashes on startup(ie 'display contacts' in the options), fixing this took me a but to work out without reinstalling it

apart form that i am fairly impressed, there are some ui features that could be fixed up but i like the on the fly font adjustment which really helps with my eyesight these days, if only ic ould work out how to select items without tap and hold i would be happy

I believe that the "s" key will select the current item in the message list. I've looked for a a list of keyboard shortcuts somewhere but haven't seen one yet. The other keys I've found so far are "x" force a sync with the server, and "d" (or the more obvious "Del" key) to delete a message. Once you've selected one or more messages what key will invoke the context menu that is available as press-and-hold on the touchscreen?

I get a repeating crash that requires an uninstall and reinstall to recover if I set Global Settings > Display > Message lists > Preview lines to "0".

looks like 'h' brings up the help

Looks like they pushed out an update an hour ago requesting contact and storage permission, with any luck that came from the bug crash info i submitted to them

I suspect the same permission fixes would have also fixed the initial round of ledison crashes where it would crash on an incomming phone call, i have found that permissions seem to be the thing that is always broken with each new app release

i do like the redesigned apps as they make significantly better use of the wider screen, wont be going back to k9mail in any hurry at this point

Gemini PDA - Linux / Automount microSD
« on: August 19, 2018, 04:18:47 am »
under systemd based distros i would recomend a mount unit and an automount unit (man systemd.mount and man system.automount) once set up, this will mount he directory of choice on demand without entering user details

as an alternative 'udisk2' can be used that consists of a daemon and cli util and has native support in gnome to allow you to mount and unmount partitions

both will avoid the boot issue you described. i would recommend the udisk method for removable devices such as usb sticks and the auto mount for builtin storage such as the micro sd card slot, i frequently use this for network filesystems when coupled with the auto unmount options

Gemini PDA - Linux / Controlling brightness from other WMs

I'm trying to configure i3 to run on my Gemini, which may seem like a very strange thing to do, but I think that a keyboard-centric environment may turn out to be a really nice thing for the Gemini.
[...]
What is the magic that LxQt does, and how do i replicate it?
Not a strange thing to do at all!  I'm running stumpwm on mine.  Makes full use of the screen with nothing wasted and having a keyboard is perfect for this wm.

In any case, I have the same problem as you.  I've not figured out how lxqt does it.  What I have figured out is that you can adjust the brightness manually by changing the value in /sys/class/leds/lcd-backlight/brightness.  The value should be an integer in the range 1-255.  I am writing a shell script to do this but it needs root access.  I'm getting around this by using sudo within the script and having my account set up so that it does need a password to invoke sudo.

One thing i do at my end is use the command 'id' to see if the script is being run as root and if not rexec the script via sudo meaning i do not have to worry about which comamnds need to be runa s root and which do not there are also some more subtle security issues this can fix but they are more of a concern for the environment i was working in with hostile users with high skll levels

the trick i use on my own systems is to use tmpfiled from systemd to change the group owner of the brightness file to that of the 'input' user that is avialbie on most modern distros and already have my user added to that group allowing myself access without root privileges

i stole the chromebook backlight animations and converted them to a cli script at http://blitz.works/text11/file/b405360ab31...11/backlight.py may need some work to update paths to point ot the LED backlight but if there is a brightness file that is autodetected i would recommend using that one rather than the LED one

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Gemini accidents, one good one bad

Second incident, the bad news: my pinky was bitten when closing the lid, near the hinge. Visible damage consists of a 5mm blood blister on the inside of the 2nd pinky joint. Invisible damage included the shouting of nasty words within ear distance of young children.

Old Sapjaw strikes again, also had bloodblister

I know it is supposed to be a design point of the phone but i have found it to be one of the most annoying features, due to drawing blood and preventing me from easily setting he angling of the screen like a normal friction stop would do.

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Trackball Suggestions?
« on: June 08, 2018, 12:48:06 am »
I use the logitech MX Ergo, i do have a m570 but the ergo is significantly nicer to use day to day to the point i was carrying it to and from work. Defiently worth the extra cost. the m570 only makes sense to me if you are unsure if you want a trackball or not.

have used it with the gemini and it works fine and being able to pair with 2 devices and switch between them has been nice when the laptop is around

Gemini PDA - Linux / Linux mali graphics acceleration
« on: March 14, 2018, 07:09:13 am »
While going through my RSS feeds this landed in my lap

MALI Driver

the TL;DR is that someone is working on mali GPU drivers for linux

It would appears that there is ongoing work (Post-lima) to have OSS graphics drivers. this is for the T860 and not the T880 as is in the x25/X27 however the difference between these chips is mainly the amount of cores and should just be a simple a matter of testing and perhaps updating a constant or two

Based on the authors blog posts work seems to be happening at a quick pace and so i am hopeful there should be something usable in the coming months

cant wait till there is something i can run on my chromebooks and phone

Gemini PDA - Android / Gemini MassStorage App?

Suggestion:

It occurred to me after hearing Dr. Janko mention one side
of the Gemini's USB ports supported being used in "slave"
mode, that it would be great if they'd provide an app
(driver?) which would allow for the Gemini to be used as a
USB MassStorage device.

Like the original Android phones did, before they pulled
the functionality in ~v1.5-1.6.

Was poking around with this earlier, try enabling dev mode by going to the about  phone apge and tapping the version 7-8 times, you then have the option of specifying what the device shows up as when attached. i have tried it with the network adapter without luck but that may be a driver issue

Interestingly the binaries i pull off the site have different hashes

i did note a trustzone binary in there which if we are lucky means the hardware visualization stuff is in there, poking around the arm github pages points to some alternate implementations but it will all depend on if it needs to be signed. with any luck planetcom has he keys to the kingdom and not mediatek

Has anyone gotten the linux image to work (not the android one) keep hitting the corrupt zip issue at my end

What is the significance of getting access to the UART module?

Helpful but not a major blocker, there are other ways to get data off the device and its common to have a serial via the usb connection if you have a special cable.

MediaTech is selling a dev board with the X20 on it.
https://www.mediatek.com/products/developme...-board-96boards
The dev board does not mention any GSM connectivity, although the X20 it self does
https://www.mediatek.com/products/smartphon...t6797-helio-x20

Our dev board is essentially the gemini itself, there will be enough differences that it will likely not be much of a gain to use a working dev board as these boards allow you to start software work before you have the hardware. as the gemini is delivered already we have the hardware to test on.

I have not played with a SoC dev board before. Does anyone have experience with a SoC api?
Do they give a well documented library that gives us full access to their hardware?
Why do companies like this not want to freely give out a well documented library for users to play with? I would like to be able to just go on their website and download this library.
How does a company like Planet Computers go about developing for a SoC? They have to sign NDA? A non public dev board for the X27 exists or the X family is so similar you just use the same code.

When you say there is no upstream support, what this means is that MediaTech has not submitted any code/drivers to the linux kernel that drives their hardware. Is this correct?

Please help me understand how this scene works.

Kernel development is a bit different to userspace development, there is no 'library' that we can drop in and use, and the quality of most chip vendors code is questionable at best. The major problems are that the 3.19 kernel is real old and has diverged significantly, in addition the android 3.19 kernel had a large amount of custom written parts in it that diverged from the base 3.19

There are some things we can leverage cross vendor, eg cpufreq stuff and some graphical/GPU stuff as this is mostly licesed cores that only really diffre by locaiton in memory. In addition the armv8 series came up with a spec that is sort of like the PC-XT spec and standardizes armv8 designs allowing a lot of power and boot code to be reused. the real issues will include the following

* Board specif cbring up
* memory timings
* SD reader driver
* usb type c drivers (still in flux in 4.15, will not really be stable 100% complete till 4.18 or end of this year)
* wif drivers (MT7610U/USB is supported but not confirmed this is the chip we use)
* 4g modem
* Keyboard driver
* IIO Sensors (gyroscope/compuss)

even once we do get access to the source (if we do) this si not going to be a simple copy and paste job and will likely be without vendor documentation

I would have paid 2x the current costs for an exynos based chip as i know samsung upstreams their drivers in mainline before devices hit production making ti a very simple affair to get a newer kernel working. there also would not be these limitations with the usb ports and chargng/displaying whihc is one of the major points of contention for me.

(mainline means that the kernels on kernel.org contain the drivers required to run the board)

still poking things at my end and hope to come up with a  todo list soon but if anyone has a link to the kernel sources and is willing to share let me know as there are some drivers i would not mind having on hand

Hi

I have tried a 128GD exFAT microSD in my Gemini but its not recognised and asks me to format it. I am not keen as it contains data. Does anyone know the file system that Gemini needs for storage? FAT32?

Just formated a 256GB card i had laying around and set it as the internal storage and everything appears to be working once i migrated data across (used internal mode for sd card not external)
