Hardware Mods / Replacing Microdrive With Cf
« on: May 12, 2007, 04:41:59 pm »
Couldn't you just put the swap file on an SD card? They're both flash of course, but it would be cheaper and easier to replace. In any case, I've actually be using a swap file on my SD card for quite a while with no apparent ill effects.

I recently saw that you can get a 16GB CF card for $105 after (a very large) mail-in rebate, and I was wondering how well that would work as a replacement for the Zaurus' internal microdrive. Any thoughts? Having such a large amount of internal storage is very attractive to me. With a 4GB SD card, you'd have 20GB available and still have the CF slot free. If you really wanted to, you could stuff about 36GB in the Zaurus if you used one of these 16GB cards in the CF slot as well!

How hard is it to replace the internal microdrive, anyway?

The Zaurus in the picture is totally what the current Zauruses should look like, though. The widescreen would be great, and a lot better looking than the fat bezel we have now.

It's got to be a Photoshop job. It's just the 3100 with a widescreen.

Deals and Great Z Buys / Question On Vendors
« on: May 04, 2006, 05:14:33 pm »
PriceJapan worked great for me, and they are very fast. They are mostly just a "sell it to you and you figure out the rest" type of vendor, in comparison with the more "full service" vendors. Which you prefer is up to you.

Care to link to any mentions of it? I did a google search but didn't see anything that wasn't obviously a typo or conjecture about a future model.

Last note on why Windows or not, it won't matter. The most popular MP3 player on Earth does not run Windows or a variant of Windows. And its not even from Microsoft. Apple proved that if it does what users want, at the right price, users will lap it up.  ... and you do not even need to have the Windows Start Button!

The iPod isn't a computer, though -- it doesn't do anything but play media. Well, it does a few other things, but it doesn't run programs or create documents, browse the web or send emails. It is fundamentally a viewer -- even its PDA-like functions are strictly read-only.

But there is a linux port in the works  [a href=\"http://ipodlinux.org/Main_Page]http://ipodlinux.org/Main_Page
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I'm well aware of that, but running Linux on something doesn't make it a PDA. iPodLinux is still very music-focused and while there are some very simple programs that can be run on it, the lack of any kind of reasonable input device kind of makes it hard to do much with them. (And no, [a href=\"http://www.artm-friends.at/rm/ipodlinuxguidedtour/ipodlinuxguidedtour-Seiten/Bild5.html]using the scroll wheel to individually select each letter is not reasonable.)

I can see why there are few public wifi hotspots in Japan if they have good, cheap data cell coverage, but what about domestic wifi? How do they check their email in the bathr.., er, backyard?

It's not like wi-fi is completely nonexistent in Japan, but you have to realize that most people live in very small apartments. The appeal of going wireless is somewhat lessened if you really only have one or two rooms to begin with. If they should need to be mobile for a bit, even around the house, I would think many people would just use their cellular card. And I think most people would be horrified by the idea of surfing in the bathroom (some serious hangups about cleanliness there).

Software / Copying The Text-to-speech Program From The 3200?
« on: May 02, 2006, 04:21:46 am »
Apparently one of the new programs that comes with the 3200 is an English Text-To-Speech program. I think that would be pretty fun to play around with, and I would think it would run on my 3100 if someone could figure out how to copy it. Is there an installer on the CD that comes with the 3200?

So have you given up on the idea of the EPWING wikipedia? Even if it has to be split up into a bunch of different subdictionaries, I'm not sure it would make much difference in terms of usability, since programs like Zten can search multiple dictionaries at once.

Mac Issues / Firewall-settings For Os X Internetsharing Via Usb
« on: May 02, 2006, 03:06:38 am »
I mentioned in this thread that I was able surf the Internet on my Zaurus using a bluetooth connection to my Mac. But somewhere along the line it stopped working (perhaps when I upgraded to Tiger). I could connect to the Mac and use things like FTP, but not surf the net. This thread made me realize that I had to open some ports in the firewall to get it to work again. I opened up ports 80 and 443 (for secure web sites) and now I am surfing with no problems.

(See the thread above if you want the bluetooth sharing scripts I used.)

Edit: After trying to enable this on another machine, I discovered that the port settings weren't really my problem, although they are helpful when setting up the firewall. By coincidence, the machine on which I was able to get this to work had Internet sharing (to its ethernet port from airport) enabled. It turns out that unless I have Internet sharing enabled, I can't use the Internet through the Zaurus, even though I have it set to an unrelated port. It's not a big deal to enable this, since I don't use the ethernet port anyway, but I was wondering if there was another way to do this.

There is a special mac driver used for ZMacSync that deals with this, as I recall, but I'm not thrilled about the idea of screwing with the OS for things like this. The best solution for transferring files might just be a card reader (or something like FTP over wi-fi or bluetooth).

I'm not sure if I like it or not, but I do think that the PDA will more or less disappear once the smartphone has been perfected. I used to think that using a smartphone meant that you got a mediocre PDA and mediocre phone (and there's still some truth to that) but they're getting better. And I'll have to admit that if they can come up with something that adequately combines the features of both devices, I'd buy one. I don't usually take a bag with me when I leave the house, which means that my cell phone goes with me and my PDA doesn't. I'd rather be able to take both in one package.

But you don't have to get screwed by paying ridiculous prices for ringtones and wallpaper. As long as you do a little research before you buy and have a little technical knowhow, you can get around those things. They're mostly for the "unwashed masses" who don't know any better. For example, with my RAZR I can use any midi file as a ringtone (not MP3, unfortunately) and I can send and receive photos, all using bluetooth and it doesn't cost me a cent. I hate it when cell phone providers intentionally cripple their devices just to sell these services.
