Cosmo Communicator - Android / Well, I'm bloody annoyed
« on: November 11, 2019, 11:41:29 pm »
Found something here -- https://www.thecustomdroid.com/change-dpi-density-android/

I was able to enabled Dev mode and then set a custom DPI to about 600 which shifted the annoying software buttons in android to the bottom.

Hope it helps someone.

AND that is why I uninstalled my pro nova launcher!

Ifanafi

It has nothing to do with the NovaLauncher at all. It has to do with the Android revision that ships with Cosmo, and it makes no bloody sense why it acts like it does.

Cosmo Communicator - Android / Well, I'm bloody annoyed

I know, silly me to think I could get the same setup on the screen as the Gemini, but hope springs eternal.

The Fn + C/V keys allow for sizing the display, which on the Gemini I had set to a custom 288 - but Cosmo will only let me go to 300.

Why does this matter? Well, the bloody android "software buttons" insist on being on the right-hand side orientation, and not even NovaLauncher will be able to change that, as far as I can tell.
So now I have the Back/Home/Whatever buttons on the right side, in the bloody way of anything I use that goes to the right edge of the screen. Irritating as hell.

I'll wait for further guides before going on a mega-rant, perhaps there is a way to do it and I'm not aware of the exact method -- but there bloody well better be, or this thing is going on the gadget pile of shame, really quickly.

Also, why the hell the keyboard backlight doesn't stay on when I'd love it to is something else I'd love to know how to change.

I wouldn't mind rolling the Cosmo back to the Android rev I had on the Gemini to get my screen rez back, but I'm not holding my breath for that kind of radical solution.

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Accessories?

I just changed job and my new employer has a fancy 3D printer. If anyone has a design for covers for the Gemini please let me know.
If anyone has design skills and wants to design covers, I will print off two sets and send you a set for free.

The design must be made freely available on one of the popular repositories for others to use.

I'd be extremely interested if you could publish the models in a 3D printing compatible format, such as STL, Collada, OBJ, X3D, etc...

Of course, that is contingent on whether you can get hi-rez scans or the original design details.

Gemini PDA - Android / Word and Excel crash

Now both Microsoft Word and Excel, immediately after opening, close and crash (also deleting cache data)

I don't know if this will help at all - but I did get them to run before I installed a custom launcher. I'm using Nova Launcher.

Not sure if there is a conflict, or something else I've done. I ended up deleting them.

Gemini PDA - Hardware / Teardown?

What hardware mod are you planning?

I'd love to insert a thin LED for some keyboard side-lighting if possible. Maybe string a contact to one of the 5v lines? But I'll leave that to more capable modders

Gemini PDA - Hardware / speakers out of phase?

Planet have mentioned that the speakers are currently mono only, but this will be fixed in a future firmware update. That said, it sounds like the polarity on one of the speakers is inverted or else something funky is going on there, so not sure if that can be fixed in software.

I wonder if anyone has noticed lower volume through headphones? I don't get the warning like you would in other devices in Android for raising the volume through settings -- but I do wonder if there is some kind of limiter on the top-end volume level.

This is going through some pretty high-quality headphones too, so it wasn't a factor of crap connection or gear.

Gemini PDA - Android / Apps: Games

Two games one must try on gemini

- Shattered Pixel Dungeon:  https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.shatter...edpixeldungeon/
- Frozen Bubble: https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.jfedor.frozenbubble/

Pixel Dungeon is cool, unfortunately Frozen Bubble triggered a MalwareBytes "infected" warning.

Would it be an idea to include SD cards here (or in a separate list)?

I can confirm that the Samsung 256GB 100MB/s (U3) MicroSDXC EVO Select (MB-ME256GA/AM) works fine.

But I'll be tempted to get a bigger one as soon as one's confirmed…  (I have a lot of music!)

I can confirm that the PNY Elite-X microSD 256GB, P-SDU256U3100EX-GE works - I'm using it as external storage instead of the debacle that Android "internal" storage does to you.

For the uninitiated, choosing "internal" for storage when it asks to setup the SD Card means it formats then encrypts the card with a key that makes it useless on any other device. You can control where your apps go, but honestly its a pain in the ass and I regretted using a smaller card in that mode.

Save yourself the trouble, use "External".

Gemini PDA - Android / Termux - Using Xeffyr termux-x-repository

What do you get by installing it from that repository that you don't from e.g. Yalp Store (which is what I used)?

I just had a goal to utilize it, since the whole Linux flash-and-install procedure seemed alpha as hell -- so Termux is my stand-in until things improve.

I don't know what the differences are, personally. Just went with the first repository that made sense.

The one you linked in the first post. Specifically follow the instructions here: (clipped)

I don't know why I had gotten turned around on this, but I can report that it does indeed work. I think I was looking at different repos and getting confused in the process.

Thanks for the help!

Using the instructions provided in the repository I was able to get this to work. Did you ensure that his package repository was added as part of the enable repo step?

Throw me a bone here.

Which repository? What commands? Did you find termux-desktop in the package lists? I can't seem to find where the hell it is, or am I supposed to just install something else?

Just frustrated with the process - I'd appreciate it if you could detail things a bit more.

Gemini PDA - Android / Termux - Using Xeffyr termux-x-repository
« on: June 10, 2018, 12:27:55 pm »
Was wondering if anyone had managed to get the termux-desktop working from Xeffyr's repository.

https://github.com/xeffyr/termux-x-repository

Unfortunately "termux-desktop" isn't found, and I'm at a bit of a loss to determine next steps. Is there a better source? I've done some googling but what returns seems to be a bit different -- https://wiki.termux.com/wiki/Package_Management

Which has an entry for Xeffyr's repo:

Quote
This repository mirroring packages from the termux.net. Unlike main repository, it also stores old versions of packages.

To setup this repository, follow these steps:

1. Get PGP key for this repository. You may need to install 'dirmngr' package.

apt-key adv --keyserver keys.gnupg.net --recv 9D6D488416B493F0

2. Add this to your sources.list:

# Xeffyr's Termux Packages mirror
deb https://termux.xeffyr.ml/ stable main

Then do apt update to update package lists.

And I'm still a bit confused as to what I'm grabbing for use on the Termux app on Gemini.

Would appreciate any pointers or experiences you have relating to this.

Gemini PDA - Hardware / MediaTek System On Chip - mtklogger malware
« on: June 06, 2018, 05:40:24 pm »
Ran across a blog post on Medium that referenced MediaTek's SoC and what he describes as a "keylogger" mtklogger as part of the package.

Reference - https://medium.com/@chpapa/review-after-two...ne-7dd8b550609a

If this is accurate, how exactly do we trust this in its default state as Gemini PDA's are shipped, and how do you remove/fix this?

If this is not the proper forum, I apologize, thought hardware may be the best area.

Thanks in advance for any guidance on this.

Gemini PDA - Android / Android update - Beware!
« on: June 04, 2018, 09:07:57 am »
This is concerning.

Any quick tips on how to disable Over-The-Air updates so we don't get bricked? (Or can you simply refuse to install it?)

Appreciate any replies on this.
