General Discussion / Zaurus As A Work And Research Tool?!

Hello All,

Thank you for all the positive feedback on the idea of going Zaurus.  Meanie - you do have an impressive site.  And thanks to DaemonsGR for the advice too.

I think lpotter inadvertantly brings up the biggest "Fear" I have for going down this path - That is my total lack of understanding of the Japanese language.  I've seen a couple of sites that can do conversions to English but at a HORRIFIC cost.  I don't know if a DIY solution is more pain than it's worth.  So to add to my original post I'll add a couple more questions: -

1) Is there a good, reliable and cheap method that can De-nippon the Zaurus (I'm looking at the sl-c3200).  And has anyone got past the problem in the address book of serarching in Japanese phonetics instead of alphabetically??

2) Handwrittten notes (either text recognition or a graffiti/jot fill in) are they possible on the Zaurus?? It's hard to gain rapport with a person while typing behind a(n) (addmittedly tiny) screen.

Cheers,
AdamD

untranslating is as simple as 1)installing the language program and switching to English 2) installing english inputmethods. or reflashing with an english rom.

You can also edit the qpe.conf file and run a qcop command to also switch languages.

The Trolltech Qtopia 2 roms have fullscreen handwriting method.

and I spend half my time in brissie last year with a zaurus running japanese qtopia hacked to display english. oh the irony of that

Qtopia default is actually English. Except for whatever Japanese inputmethods Sharp produced. You have to untranslate it to get English.

woohoo! go brissie!
I would think zaurus would be the perfect platform for you.

Did you know Qtopia is developed right here in brissie?

There's room for all build systems. There's more than openembedded and pdaxrom build systems out there and also more than just 2 rom image distributions. I use old buildroot for the Qtopia Trolltech roms. I prefer it over openembedded.
There's also other non free distributions as well.

Use what works for you.
Linux is all about choice, not getting tied onto only one 'thing'.

It's good to have more than one "rom", or gui environment, or build system to choose from.

Qt/Qtopia / Qtopia4 Core
« on: May 05, 2006, 03:58:25 am »
Qtopia 2 does not compile nor work with Qtopia Core 4. They are incompatible, and that measn we can fix up Qtopia's API.

I would suggest trying the snapshots.

No testing is being done using gcc2 for Qt 4, that I am aware of.

qtopia still as far as I can tell still only builds on qt version 2 and not qt v4 - qtopia2.2 includes a full qt-e-2.3.10 set of sources.

Qtopia 4 does indeed use Qtopia Core (Qt Embedded) 4.

Trolltech had predicted that by 2005 year end there would be around 10 (or more) manufacturers who would carry Qtoipia on their phones. Never happened.

There was talk of Qtopia phones hitting the US shores...never happened.

I still do hope that we will indeed see some Qtopia phones, but...

The Register article mentions the Motorola A780 as a feather in Troltech's hat, but I don't thing the A780 runs Qtopia at all. It is supposed to be a Motorola interface on Linux, not Trolltech's Qtopia interface at all.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=125718\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Phone manufacturers are slow. There are more than 30 vendors designing phones based on Qtopia.

The US market is usually the last to adopt new technologies. It will happen there too.

Motorola phones use Ezx, which is based on Qtopia Core (qt/e) technology.

yes, I build it just about everyday. I am surprised it actually compiles with gcc2

You can make it smaller by configuring -qconfig small or whatever.

yes, but you'd have to recompile opie for qvfb support, and then run opie in the qvfb app.

ummm.. actually there is a way. There is an xserver called xqt, that runs x in a qtopia window.

I use Just Reader too. I wish Gutenbrowser worked, but the Zaurus bug is still listed as open on sourceforge. Just checked it the other day.

Linux Issues / Zaurus 3200 -> English?
« on: March 19, 2006, 02:30:07 pm »
Qtopia is by default, english.

To untranslate the japanese roms, install a qpe-language program to switch to english.
such as this:
http://qtopia.net/packages/SHARP/qpe-langu...5.0-8bp_arm.ipk

hi all,

after playing around a little with my c3k and pdaxrom I realized my pda became of no use for me....... basically I need a good pim and the possibility to sync with my personal computer running qtopia desktop...

so I'm back to oz.

downloaded a spitz 3.5.4 rom from hrw dir and sadly discovered I can't sync with my pc running qtopia.

what happened?
