« on: August 04, 2006, 02:03:57 pm »
Can you watch it on a TV and the Pocketdish screen at the same time??
Thanks for any help.....

That would be a nice to have.  I hook it into the DVD in my Suburban for the kids, but have to switch screens always when I navigate.

Hi Guys!

Is there any way to load subtitles with the AV700? Maybe some conversion from .srt. or .sub to any format the device can read... Any ideas?

Are you referring to subtitles in DVD movies for example?  If so, Mobile CloneDVD by Slysoft allows you to turn these on when you rip.

Thanks Tim. Never tried or seen AnyDVD. (have now, just looked at the slysoft site)I assume it will still require a process as does dvdshrink. Plus I can reauther with DVDshrink so I only get the movie. Plus dvdshrink is free!

Seems odd that clonedvdmobile won't convert copywright dvd's and gives you a message. But they will sell you an add on program that will!!
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=136348\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

What does DVDShrink do?  I went to the site, but it was down.  What do you mean by re-author?

I can't figure how Slysoft gets around copywrite as well.  Perhaps since the individual program does not work without the other they can claim it isn't breaking any laws.  I only use the program with DVDs that I have purchased so I think I am OK.

Thanks for the replies. I finally ended up using clone dvd mobile. Makes a change for a program to actually do what is says it does and so easily & quickly. I rip using dvd shrink, re-auther just to get the movie and then convert with clone dvd. I must admit, I haven't checked that the films run their course but they are all about 1.5g in size. Perhaps I'd better check! I've transferred them via Windows Media player as I couldn't figure out how to change the player to show up as a hard drive!
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=136331\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Display Setup Screen, System, USB Port, then select Hard Drive.

Question for you; Why do you use DVD Shrink, etc.. ? Why not simply use Mobile Clone DVD with AnyDVD for copywrite protection?

No comment from Archos Technical Support, just an RMA Number.  They say it is ~10 business days for turn around on repairs currently.  They also indicated they format the hard drive as part of their procedure for repair.  I bought a 160 gb external drive last week that I had planned to use for regular back-ups.

Your center button issue must really be a pain as this is a primary button.  I would get it fixed as well.

Sounds like your hard drive has failed.  I would send it back immediately as it is under 30 days.  Where did you buy it from?  Most stores have a 30 day return policy.  After the 30 days you would have to obtain repair from Archos.

Best of luck,

A splitter will degrade your signal, but if your getting a decent picture you should be recording the same.

My quality seems pretty decent.
My settings are as follows;

Firmware:   1.5.12
Source: Auto
Format: Auto
Res: VGA
Bitrate: 2500 kb/s
Sampling: 48 khz
Brightness: 37
Contrast: 25
Saturation: 25
Hue: 0

I too come directly out of a VCR to make my connection.  I have tried a cable box at a friend's house and the quality seems the same.

Best of luck,

In case you are not aware, Pelican has had a safety recall of those batteries. Check out this site:

(Unless these are a new defect-free batch.)

This was not the power brick.  Just the AC Apdapter.

I have had your post in my mind for the past week or so.  I finally bought a PSP power supply at Best Buy.  It is a Pelican brand.  The tip is just a tad too large for the AV500.

Has anyone tried the combination USB cable/DC Power/Mini USB ables?

I have sent an email to Archos regarding the issue.  I am thinking it is best to get the issue resolved now while I am under warranty.  It is not a major issue, but with my luck it will turn into one later.

The right navigation button on my AV500 is touchy.  I have to press very firmly to get it to activate and even then it is still flaky.

Has anyone had any issues with the navigation buttons that required warranty repair?

Enjoy it!  I really like mine.  I have an iPod Nano as well, but I like the idea of having several songs available anywhere.  I have about 20 CDs remaining to to rip in my collection and I will have over 7,000 songs to chose from whenever.  I also have many of my music videos ripped as well.

Technology is great!

what do i need to do to format videos for the av500?
Read the thread titled " Archos 700 Video Playback Problems, Archos 700 video playback problems" this explains the process I use.

1. What is the downside to recording movies straight from the tv and avoiding the whole process of ripping/converting/syncing?

2.  If you record a movie from your dvd player, will it automatically stop recording at the end of the dvd, or do you have to be there?
I assume you are talking about DVR versus ripping...You can program in duration.  It will end automatically.

3. Does it have direct encoding.  I know that this was a feature on the x5, where you could plug it into say, a record player, and record teh record straight onto the device.
It has an Audio Recorder feature.

4.  Just one last little question.  can you edit names of files directly on the player, or do you need to hook it up to a computer to change song/movie names?
Yes, but it is more cumbersome then using the PC.

I know im asking a lot of questions, so thanks if you take the time to read and answer them.

Yes, I had this same issue.  I am using the same software.  When the duration of the video exceeds ~ 1 hr 10 minutes you must split the ripping process into separate files.  On the software, in the Title Configuration screen (the second screen) use the scissors in the lower right hand corner of the preview screen to select the first half (or third if it is really long) of the video.  You then have to repeat the riping for the second half of the movie.  You can do this by chapters for ease.

The advantage is you can also up the quality of the splits and still remain under 2 gb. I always max out the quality setting at 33.

Alternatively, you can take the single file (that ends early) you had created and use the MPG4 Translator program that came with the Archos.  The disadvantage to this is you have added another conversion process that takes another hour and the quality drops dramatically.

I recommend splitting the files - name them Pt.1, Pt.2, etc.., creating a folder on your Archos to place them in, and finally selecting sequential video play within a folder in your settings.  When you open the first part the second will automatically open when the first finishes.

Good Luck,
