I myself has also moved to newer gadgets, but keep a daily eye on oesf, and I was sad it going out-of-business.

Congrats!

Nokia Tablet / N900 Anyone?
« on: March 12, 2010, 06:17:46 am »
I'm using a fujitsu u810, and I'm very satisfied; it's 2 years old now, and even it's still performing very well, I'm looking for a replacement (geeks need to change toys sometime ...)

With the u810, I find suspend/resume very nice, just something like 5secs each, and extremelly robust; my last uptime was 35 days!!, suspending once or twice a day!!

It has 5'' tablet touchscreen, and battery wise is about 4/5 hours with the extended battery that comes as default.

Now I'm looking for an ultraportable notebook (not netbook), since I got a little tired of underpowered computers, that don't allow me running powerful development tools nor other os emulation.

I don't know where you see "per month". I understand all these prices to be *daily*.
The monthly plan is above, 24.99. And you must add 16% tax...

hi fpp

1) the plan for 24.99 is for unlimited data, up to 5gb full umts, from that at low speed

2) the plan I'm talking about is 5euro/month +16%vat is for up to 500mb/month; even it's true in their website per month is not explicitly detailed, that's how it works. I've been using it for more than a year, and I do review my invoices monthly. And there is not any minimum monthly fee!

Site Suggestions, Requests, and Updates / Slow Forums - Server Problems ?

you can 'solve' this issue by configuring your computer to have an ip addrress in the same offending subnet, like 192.168.1.27; as root, just type

ifconfig eth0:alt 192.168.1.27

and it'll go fast again; of course, I also expect to see the root cause being solved asap ....

I think mobile devices need integrated 3g:

- no dongles hanging

- when I'm at home/office, I don't use a mobile device with small screen/keyboard, apart from emailing and low network tasks

- no tethering: 3g gets too much battery, so I don't want to spend my phone call battery for data; phone is too important to waste the battery twittering or so ...

- with a mobile device, network consumption is not very high, because it barely plays videos and battery runs out faster; for real downloading I'll always use dsl with a powered computer ...

- 3g is getting real cheap, at least in europe: I have one special sim for 3g, 5euro/month for 500MB

- nowadays even the cheapest phone is 3g enabled, come on, even if you don't use it, it should be already integrated, it doesn't add much to the cost. Isn't bluetooth and wifi already integrated, even some people may not use it?

- I think I read like 1 month ago that wpa2 security was also at risk; there was a group working on rainbow method to decrypt; of course, though, there also exist 3g decrypting tools ... but the point is that the vast majority of people just use wep, like 90% of wifis are wep only, giving a false sense of security

- internal 3g should be implemented with hot-pluggable sim, like the nokia booklet does, then you can easily plug the sim in the laptop or whatever other 3g device you want to use. I'm amazed that all phones you have to switch it off / remove the battery to change the sim; this is obviously a 'carrier-friendly feature' manufacturers don't want to change, to prevent sim swapping. I'm amazed people never complain about this; for me, the nokia booklet is a winner just for this feature

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Zaurus Is Dead .... Long Living Zaurus Aka Pc-z1
« on: August 28, 2009, 05:38:43 am »
Uhm... this post seems to be a hot one for these times ...

I also think there are some showstoppers:

- no integrated 3.5G
- screen bezel too big, why not make screen go to the maximum height/width ?

And, regarding the N900, I also think the screen is too small.

So, I'm waiting for next week archos announcement of a 5'' android tablet, let's see ....

Speculatrix, I would certainly go for the TV.

WAF (wife-acceptance factor) is a major constraint in modern life, that we always tend to underestimate in the short-term, but in the long term it will come back to you even stronger.

Unless you can have both, I definitely go for the TV.

I'm running ubuntu (8.04, 8.10 and now 9.04).

I also get external resolution 1920x1200, which, from windows is not available; windows graphic driver allows only a max external resolution of 1600x???.

My 40GB is splitted in a 20GB Vista and 17GB ubuntu partitions; I just have office 2000 installed in the windows partition, and I only have 500MB free!!

I have to agree that the cramped keyboard and its configuration is really poor; but on the other side, couldn't be bigger for this small footprint, I guess, so I have to live with it as long as I get such a small computer.

It's my main computer, actually, and soon it'll be 1 year old with daily use !!

I have a Fujitsu U810, and for fast boot (2-3 sec) I have linux+suspend on lid close, resume on lid open.

It works very well, an it's really as fast as my zaurus resume could be.

On resume, battery keeps the unit for 3/4 days. So after closing the lid on Friday, on Monday I resume in 2/3 sec without any problem.
