General Discussion / wifi setup help
« on: January 03, 2004, 04:02:15 pm »
(sorry - i posted in the accessories area but didn\'t get a reply so I thought I\'d post here)

Can someone point me to a how to or something for setting up a wireless connection.

I just got a wireless router at home and a linksys CF wireless card (wcf12). I have an 860.  I tried connecting with tkc 2.5.1 but it didn\'t work so I just installed the latest cacko rom. I have searched the forums and couldn\'t find a step by step process for connecting. (the howto on this site under the c7x0 doesn\'t actually apply to the c7x0 series.)

I have created an entry in the network applet , set to \"Infrastructure\" and I set the ess-id to the same as my router.  wep is disabled.  I didn\'t change anything else in the setup.

I understand that at this point I should see a globe in the applet bar, but there is nothing there.  If I try to run netfront it suggests that I connect, but when I try it says that it \"cannot find the device card for communication\".  Is there something I can do to see if the card is even recognized by the z.  Should i install anything (I haven\'t installed anything after flashing cacko) do I need kismet or something?

Thanks

Software / PIM source code
« on: January 01, 2004, 10:55:38 pm »
Does anyone have the source code for one of the pims for the zaurus?  I\'m thinking the sharp pim or (preferably) the one distributed with OZ.

I\'m interested in extending the functionality.  It seems that these pim\'s are limited by wanting to be able to sync to outlook and so the functionality is basically the same as outlook.  I like the OZ one since it save to xml.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / OZ 3.3.6-pre1 for 860
« on: December 30, 2003, 11:02:38 am »
I want to try 3.3.6-pre1 of oz.  I downloaded initrd-gcc3.bin, updater.sh and zimage-boxer.bin from http://www.openzaurus.org/official/experim...860/3.3.6-pre1/ and did the renaming.  I then tried to flash but it imediately came up with an error \"invalid model\".

I thought that 860 == boxer.  Am I missing something?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Screen rotation & Handwriting
« on: December 28, 2003, 09:39:02 am »
Hi.  I\'m looking at the X11 rom and I have a couple of questions.  Is there a way to rotate the screen for portrait mode?  Also, is there a handwriting ability like on the other roms?

Thanks.

General Discussion / Final try at sync and internet access
« on: December 19, 2003, 10:44:03 pm »
OK.  I am about to throw this 860 off the highest building I can find.

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING IS A RANT.  IF YOU DON\"T WANT TO LISTEN PLEASE SKIP TO THE NEXT PARAGRAPH CAUSE I REALLY NEED SOME HELP.  --   I know why Sharp does not want to release these things in north america - its because they are not ready for prime time.  If you want to sell a pda to the mass market you have to make it work \"out-of-the-box\". I have been trying to get this thing to sync and connect to the internet for about two weeks now and I haven\'t been able to.  Note that I have been working with computers for over 25 years.  I started out building computers from components in the 70\'s - etching pc boards etc. (I know, I know - I\'m a dinosaur)  I am now designing/developing web e-commerce apps using java/jboss/tomcat so I feel that I have a resonable level of competence to bring to this thing.  The reason I want to use a zaurus is because it seems to meet the requirements my company has for a certain application.  I want to use it as a node in a peer to peer ecommerce application and am hoping to be a zaurus reseller.  This application will be used by people who are not linux guru\'s so it needs to work (once set up) well enough for someone who has little technical know-how.  I need a PIM (no problem) word/excel compatability (no problem) but I also need internet connectivity via the usb cable so someone can sync to my app and then hit the road (big problem)  and also the ability to sync to outlook (big problem).  Despite the excellent work done by a lot of people around the world to build these custom roms, etc., the fact is that there are certain things that just don\'t work easily.

OK.  I feel better now.

The two things I need are to be able to sync with outlook and to connect to the internet over the usb cable. I have tried various instructions from several people and sources over the past two weeks.  I have searched this forum as well as zaurus.com and eterne.net.  I have read all the how-tos I could find. I have tried TKC, X11, OZ and the original Sharp ROMs.  I have tried software - usb drivers and intellisync - from several sources.  I have tried from my home pc (winXP) and work (Win 2000).

The closest that I have gotten is my current configuration.

My Zaurus is running TKC 2.5.1 which I just loaded.
PCLINK is set to USB-TCP/IP (advanced) with the hostname zaurus and USB IP 192.168.129.201.
I have added my DNS server ip\'s to /etc/resolv.conf (as indicated by a helpful soul)

MY PC is using Windows XP
I am using intellesync and the usb drivers from 560v132s.zip that I just downloaded from myzaurus.com.
The network connection for the zaurus (in windows XP) is set to ip address 192.168.129.200/255.255.255.0.
The local area connection for my original internet connection is set to \"allow other computers to connect through this computers internet connection\"
I have disabled my pc firewall (zonealarm) for testing.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled and rebooted several times.

Now:
I can ping the zaurus (192.168.129.201) from my pc.
I can ping my pc connection (192.168.129.200) from the zaurus.

But:
I can\'t ping www.google.com - Host name lookup failure
I can\'t ping 216.239.37.99 (googles ip) - Network is unreachable
I can\'t ping 169.254.142.154 (my dhcp assigned ip address from my isp) - Network is unreachable
When I run intellisync the zaurus screen flips into \"communicating\" mode , but then I get a \"communication was aborted\" on the zaurus 6 times and \"an error occured while trying to connect\" on the pc then it all stops.

I would REALLY, REALLY, REALLY like some help with this.  I just can\'t figure out what\'s going on and I know other people have this working.

(P.S. - you\'ll see this over on devnet as well)

General Discussion / Screen resizing
« on: December 16, 2003, 05:46:34 pm »
I thought I saw something (prior to buying my 860) about the ability to resize the screen - increase / decrease the resolution.  Is there some way to do that?

My problem is that I like small fonts and, while most apps allow you to resize the fonts in the data area, the menus / window title / etc stay the same size chewing up valuable real estate.

General Discussion / handwriting pen stroke chart (or something)
« on: December 15, 2003, 09:48:47 pm »
I want to use the handwriting option for input, but a lot of the letters I write don\'t register correctly - a Q is recognized as a C etc.

Is there a chart somewhere of how to write each letter to be recognized?  I think there is something called \"jot\" in the palm world or something.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / latest OZ 860 build? Confused about where it is
« on: December 15, 2003, 06:07:12 pm »
I just went through the openzaurus download site and couldn\'t find anything there in the 860 / huskey feed that was posted today.  Maybe I\'m missing something, but do I want to download from

http://www.openzaurus.org/official/unstabl...ble/3.3.5/C860/
http://www.openzaurus.org/official/unstabl...5/models/husky/
http://www.openzaurus.org/official/3.3.5/husky/
http://www.openzaurus.org/official/testing/3.3.5/C860/
http://www.openzaurus.org/official/testing...5/models/husky/

or what?  I\'ve looked in all these and there is nothing from today.

General Discussion / Software for TKC ROM
« on: December 13, 2003, 02:42:29 pm »
I\'ve noticed that OZ and X11 both have feeds for various software.  Is there anything like that for the tkc rom?

In general can you run software from one rom on another?

General Discussion / QTOPIA desktop - where to get
« on: December 11, 2003, 10:56:29 am »
I was looking at the Qtopia desktop which I guess is one desktop app that I could sync my 860 with.  On the Zaurus Software Index it states that I should use the one supplied by Sharp.  Of course eveything on the Sharp Supplied CD is in Japaneese so that doesn\'t help.  Is there a version of this program available for download somewhere?

General Discussion / TKC ROM - working on my 860
« on: December 11, 2003, 10:36:50 am »
Just to let people know. I\'ve got the TKC rom working. It didn\'t work at first because I flashed over top of OZ. Ultimately, I restored my NAND backup of the original sharp Rom. Then I flashed the TKC rom (option 4). Then I cleared memory (option 3).

After that it came up and its great. This is much better for my needs than anything else I\'ve seen (I haven\'t tried X11 yet).

General Discussion / TKC ROM PIM data formats
« on: December 11, 2003, 10:36:19 am »
Does anyone know the data format for the PIM apps in the TKC ROM. I want to write an load/extract program so I don\'t have to enter data from other software by hand. I presume the format is the same as the Sharp ROM\'s.

General Discussion / TKC ROM - Media player formats

I\'ve got the latest TKC ROM and I\'m wondering what formats of video are supported. I\'ve tried AVI, MPG and MPEG but none of those work.

General Discussion / USB connection to Windows
« on: December 11, 2003, 10:35:16 am »
Does anyone know how to connect to windows using the supplied USB cable. I have an 860, but I presume it works like a 760.

I am looking for a step by step kind of explanation. I am a newbie, but making this connection is important to me. It seems that all the how-to\'s I\'ve seen either expect a lot more knowledge than I have or else they are for wireless.

I am not looking for sync software, rather I want to be able to browse the web.

Thanks.
