Sharp ROMs / Cacko 121b - Nethack And Kino2
« on: December 23, 2004, 07:19:44 pm »
hi - i'm using cacko 1.21b on my 860.  i'm trying to install nethack, but the version from the zaurus software index (qpe-nethack) doesn't even show up in the list when i try to install packages.  Is there another version out there that is packaged for this rom?

also, i want to view some videos, but they don't run.  I have an assotment of mpg, mpeg, avi, mov files but nothing plays.  I try to run them and it just flashes a bit and then back to the kino screen.  This is odd as i used to use TKC and never had a problem with kino2.  Any ideas?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / What Are Various Directories In Download Section
« on: December 01, 2004, 08:28:48 pm »
I may have missed something, but.. what are all the various directories in the feed section?

base, console, devel, e, gnome, gpe, libs, opie, unknown, x

Is this just a sub-dividing the long list of packages? I presume I can install from any of the directories, but if I load opie then can I install from all but gpe and visa-versa?  And what about "x" can I install from there?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Question - Is 3.5.2 Ready?
« on: December 01, 2004, 04:14:24 pm »
Seems kind of odd to ask, since lots of people are using it, but have the development team actually released this new version?  I didn't see a release announcement

Sharp ROMs / How To Debug Wifi Problem?
« on: November 29, 2004, 07:04:06 am »
I've used tkc and cacko at times on my 860.  With TKC I had to correct the entry in /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.conf to match my card (WCF12)

I have just looked for "Symbol" in that file and couldn't find anything (on cacko) .  You should open a terminal and type "cardctl ident" - that should give you the info that you need to correct / insert the information you need in the file.  Unfortunately I don't know how to translate from the output of cardctl to the format you need.  Mind you the output may point you to some other existing entry in the wlan-ng.conf file.

Please post the ROM and version you are using and also the output of "cardctl ident".  That is the basic info needed to start with.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Kernel panic after flashing OZ 3.5.1 on C760
« on: November 22, 2004, 09:32:30 pm »
I had problems as well when I tried 3.5.1 a while ago.

I've just done it again, but first I flashed the original Japanese ROM.  This seemed to reset partitions and anything else and OZ flashed perfectly without any problems.

General Discussion / Better Batteries For The Z ?
« on: November 22, 2004, 09:10:40 pm »
Well, its been over a year that my 860 has been out and I'm thinking that battery technology has improved over that time.

Are there smaller batteries available that are the same size as the smaller battery for the C series, but with the staying power of the larger one?

Cxx0 Hardware / Need New Sd Socket
« on: November 22, 2004, 09:43:26 am »
anyone know where to get a new socket for my sd card or at least the part number?  It got a bit messed up for no apparent reason when I was putting my sd card in.

I've taken my Z apart and got it so it will work, but some of the contacts inside the sd socket are a bit bent and I'd like to replace it.  (bought it in Japan more than a year ago, so I don't have a warrenty.)

Its only the sd socket i want to replace which is just a small piece of metal with a spring for ejecting and a few gold contacts and sensors.  It looks like it only has about a dozen solder points so it shouldn't be too hard to do.

My only other option is to just leave my sd card inside and transfer files over the usb link.

Its a little disturbing because I didn't do anything unusual to break it.  I was just putting the sd card in and it seemed to bump into something.  I took the card out and saw a gold contact in an obviously wrong position.

Do you have a link to the AKAI microphone

its old - bought before the web was born.

Its just a resonable mic that I bought at radio shack.  its got a 1/4 inch jack so I have an adaptor to get it down to 1/8th

by the way, a mono jack will short the ground to the unused audio channel.  Which doesn't seem to be a problem, but I got an adapter that uses a sterio 1/8th inch jack going to 2 - 1/4 inch jacks - that way the mic only goes to the mic input and leaves the other speaker output alone.

Cxx0 Hardware / taking apart 860 - question
« on: November 21, 2004, 12:26:53 pm »
something is messed up in the sd slot on my 860.  I need to take it apart, but after removing all of the screens I can see ( 7 of them ), it doesn't come apart.

It seems like something has to be released at the front edge near the cancel / ok button, but I can't see any tab or anything there.

There also seems to be a trick of some kind near the earphone jack

Has anyone taken one of these apart?  What should I look for?

EDIT - NEVER MIND - I GOT IT

Themes, Icons, and Backgrounds / Backgroups pics for lanscape and portrait
« on: November 21, 2004, 11:42:37 am »
I don't see where you can "oversize" the picture.  Some of the bitmaps are way bigger than 640*480 but it seems to resize them to fit the landscape 640 by 480 and then it uses that smaller picture and tiles it in portrait.

bummer

Themes, Icons, and Backgrounds / Backgroups pics for lanscape and portrait
« on: November 20, 2004, 02:28:15 pm »
how do you get a backgroup picture that looks good in both orientations?  I've tried several landscape type pics on my 860 - even high res 1600*1200 and they work fine in landscape, but when you switch to portrait mode they always have the top of the pic reproduced below the main pic.

I'm looking for 2 things.

1. a good editor with syntax highlighting for java

2. how to enter a curly brace - there is no key for this on my 860 keyboard

Thanks
