Zaurus - pdaXrom / My New C3200 Now Running Pdaxrom Beta 3
« on: August 23, 2006, 04:16:25 pm »
karlto: thanks for taking the time to reply there, very helpful.

I'm gradually wading through the forums to find the answers, and have held off from posting until now because I realise most of what I am experienced will have been addresed before. The idea of me posting a bunch of points here really was to create some 3200 specific stuff as there wasn't much to read before I made my purchase - hopefully this will help other prospective buyers.

Making more progress hour by hour, I picked the perfect time to get it as I am (literally) between jobs and the more I find out the more I'm loving it.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / My New C3200 Now Running Pdaxrom Beta 3

I've now had my C3200 for a couple of days after waiting intently since ordering from Conics 2 weeks ago. I'd recommend using Conics as they are very friendly and good at emailing, and the wait was mainly down to customs etc.

I played with Sharprom for about an hour before I decided to go ahead and flash with pdaxrom - There was a huge learning curve, mainly because the information needed is spread across the net, but with help from the OESF forums, pdaxrom documentation, Zaurus wiki's, and meanie's handy customization tips, I'm getting there.

Here are my observations:

1. I've reflashed pdaxrom about 4 times now, and it's strange, each time it installs a different set of default applications - or at least, links to them - I had about 5 games at first, and on my recent install there is only one.

2. Now discovered to do one thing at a time - 1 package etc. and take it slow, running before you can walk has landed my on my face several times.

3. Turning on from cold - this is very scary, sometimes I just can't get the machine to power on, I've tried all steps I have heard, battery out for 5 secs, reset button, holding d+b when power on etc. but sometimes I just have to keep doing random things and hitting the power button before I will get any life out of it - strange.

4. Discovered that the suspend actually works perfectly, at first I thought it was broken but when resuming you must press the power button and wait - it will stay on a black screen for a couple of seconds before resuming

5. Some apps are sloooooow to load - I was hoping to be able to use firefox, but it takes an age to load and isn't very responsive once it's up - the only alternatives I can find is mozilla (same deal) and the default dillo, which is quite nice, but not very advanced - no css etc. Also the virtual keyboard is slow to load which is annoying.

6. I cannot get my .bash_profile working, I just want to add ~/bin to the path so that I can use my shell scripts and aliases.

7. Must get used to installing packages with "ipkg -d ide3 install <packagename>", it's daft that the default is the / partition which has no space... will look into setting a default or making an alias

8. Changing resolution to 320x240 using the command "xrandr -s 1" works a treat, but changing back makes half the task bar dissappear, so you can't see the clock etc.

9. Rox filer is very useful, the default desktop was useless and I still can't work out how to add/remove icons from the menu. I think they should make ROX the default.

10. Snes9x emulator works very nicely when you use low res mode - I was very surprised to see it running so nice

11. Have added a new user in /etc/passwd but using this to login doesn't allow to run X

--- more to follow ---

This all sounds very exciting I must say, not got my C3200 yet but this will definately be something I'm interested in.

I'll be keeping a close eye on this one

Zaurus - pdaXrom / How Well Does Pdaxrom Work On The C3200?

Is there any particular reason why you guys are using beta3 instead of beta4?

My 3200 is in the post

if you brick your zaurus, do not worry, someone here will help.  The zaurus is pretty punishable and can recover.

Thanks for the tips folks, I'll definately be checking out the basic sharp rom when I get it, and pdaxqtrom sounds like a good plan to dabble in both realms for a while.

Also I'm eager to attempt some cross compiling and packaging - maybe I can help out the community, but I'm not yet sure how much work is involved (I imagine most of the *essential* apps are already packaged). You may see me requesting a prod or 2 in the right direction at some point.

I do a lot of work from the within shell so I imagine running OZ or pdaxrom will be my ultimate configuration, and the chrooted debian sounds mighty tempting as that's my background really.

And while I'm here, thanks meanie for the excellent source of Z info, your site is the most useful place I've found so far

Interesting that pdaxrom is not so popular so far - from what I have discovered, graphical apps such as emulators and games run better on it than they do in other distros and I kinda thought this would be the one for me.

Curious how much trouble dual booting would be to setup, I will look into it as I usually like to have plenty of freedom over these things - unless I find myself content with just one of course

Thanks for the advice, I'll be taking it gentle at first so that sharprom will be useful - but I will be paddling around those infested waters as it's half the attraction of the Z to me  Glad to see people with C3200's as I've been getting a little nervous as to the compatibility with the unit.

Oops, I already posted the poll, but should be interesting anyway - still can't find an old poll but will have a further scout round. Still getting my tongue round the terminology, it's "rom"... "rom"... ok got it, thanks

Greetings to all,

I'm curious as to what forum members are using on their Zaurii, as what I have heard so far there appears to be a big following for all different options.

If you dualboot just choose the most common distro you use

You could also mention any reasons for this preference if you wish.

(apologies if this poll has been done before - I did search and found not one)

Well I've ordered a 4Gb SD card off ebay so I hope that works ok, as for my other questions, I'll find out when I get the unit.

Kinda curious what the most popular distro is, I think I'll start a poll to see as I've not seen one on my quest for Z education

Hi all,

I've been reading up on everything I can find lately as I'm expecting my new C3200 to be delivered from Conics soon. Held off posting any questions until now, but really want to know a few things, namely;

- Is it possible to play quicktime mov videos, I can't find any reference to quicktime on any zaurus sites.

- Want to get a 4Gb SD card, and I see there are people using them and drivers to support it, but is this cut & dried, or does the driver only work on certain distros. What if I want to use the SD card to store another distro or whatever. And if there are problems, would partitioning it to 1Gb say, be a workaround?

- Finally, I've noticed lots of cool software, like emulators, and games, that are designed for older Z models, will I be having problems getting these to work on a C3200 if there is no updated software for my model (or the C3X00 range). And would it have to be available in the feeds or could I just install an IPK from one of the software pages.

Thanks everyone for contributing to teaching early learners like myself!

Software / Help With Using A Blank Save Disk With Frodo
« on: August 09, 2006, 12:08:43 pm »
Hi, I don't have a zaurus (just yet) but I know about C64 emulation. You can use Total Commander in Windows with this plugin: to manipulate disk images, just use an existing one and delete all the contents and save it back to the zaurus - voila - one clean disk to use in the emulator.

C64 versions of Ultima are very nasty for disk changes - I remember playing Ultima VI with about 8 disks, ugh. There might be better versions emulated on the z, or maybe you could try Exult, but it's worlds away from the early games.
