General Discussion / Charge Battery In Car?
« on: November 26, 2004, 07:25:55 pm »
omega, I don't claim to know the physics of this, I am just re-quoting old threads.

see this thread 10 posts down from TRIsoft :-
https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...&hl=car+charger

TRI-soft are well known and well trusted in the zaurus community so I have no reason to doubt them on this.

I am also fairly sure I have seen posts from people who have bricked their zaurus this way, but can't find them at the moment.

I use an old nokia car charger that I cut the plug off and soldered a zaurus type connector  on instead.

It works great, but I never leave it plugged in when starting the car after reading that post.

Maybe it's untrue, or just a marketing ploy, but I personally wouldn't want to risk it and wouldn't want anyone destroying their pride and joy either.

Either way, make sure the polarity is correct as other people in this thread have said. See these posts about bricked zauri  with car chargers that have the wrong polarity :-

bricked z1

bricked Z 2

Also, never leave the charger plugged in when you start the car.

The resulting power surge can fry the charger circuit of the zaurus.

Still here,
I only monitor it through new posts as the traffic is usually very low.

Accessories / downloading GPS data to Zaurus
« on: October 28, 2004, 04:35:31 am »
just in case you didn't know.
QPEGPS will record tracks (routes) for you.
These tracks are then saved as text files, like a list of co-ordinates, that can then be loaded into other software on a PC like gpsdrive.

As the routes are stored as ascii text files, if your software doesn't understand the format, they can be easily converted using a simple shell script into a format your software does understand.

Hope this helps.

Can they not send the items they have, then send the missing item when it arrives?

Unless of course you need all the bits.

I would buy it if they did.

It's the only thing my zaurus is missing that I badly want.

That looks like a sandisk to me, except with the word sandisk removed.

Accessories / Installing screen protector?

you need to smooth out the bubbles with a soft cloth as you apply the protector.

you may be able to peel it back to the bubble then smooth it back down with the cloth.

It took me two attempts as I kept getting dust in there.

what exactly is your problem with the cacko rom and your bluetooth card?
1.21b works fine with my bluemonkey card with just a very minor amendment to stop it  from hanging on eject.

I've just checked the logs and it seems it's not even getting to the password stage, it appears to be getting stuck at sending my username (changed in the logs to zbones)

Also a minute isn't quite long enough as the modem needs to connect first.

Security and Networking / securid and afterdial connection to ras server.
« on: October 10, 2004, 07:13:57 am »
Hello, I have to use a securid card (constantly generates a code) to log in to our ras server at work.

On the laptop the afterdial terminal option is enabled, I enter no password/username click dial and a window pops up for me to enter the username and generated password.

I cannot find a way of using an afterdial terminal on the zaurus.

I have tried putting the securid password in before I dial but this doesn't work, possibly because the password has changed by the time it connects.

I am connecting via bluetooth which works for internet through gprs ans also works when I dial up a gsm internet provider.

Anyone got this working?

Off Topic forum / Will Bush win?
« on: September 17, 2004, 04:02:47 pm »
Are you refering to a small green shrub, or the hairy bits covering the female reproductive organ, or maybe something that you smoke?

I can't think of any other type of bush at the moment, let alone one that could win something other than "best garden" competition.

Is this an American thing perhaps?

5x00 Hardware / Buttons not working
« on: September 17, 2004, 03:38:30 pm »
I had a similar problem on my 5500.

ON/OFF only worked with the keyboard open.

It is probably dirty contacts on the copper(brass?) contacts.

Pull down the keboard and look at the back and you will see the contacts for the keyboard used when the keypad is in the closed position. Cleaning these fixed my problem.

your problem also occures with it open so you will have to clean the top contacts which are only accessible with the keypad removed.

This can be done by either removing the 4 screws, two at each side. Make sure you don't lose the screws and tighten them up fully when you refit the keyboard.

You can also remove the keypad without removing any screws by opening the keyboad fully and easing the keypad off by pushing it to one side first. (takes practice)

Once removed you can clean all the contacts and the wire runners.

If the problem persists then again remove the keypad and undo the 4 screws holding the pcb to the keypad and clean the contacts under there.

I doubt you will need the last bit as the runners are the most likely cause.

Hey,
at least we got advanced warning this time, maybe sharp do listen to us after all.

Can we get a searchable copy of the database from them, I feel they owe us that much at least.
