Zaurus - pdaXrom / Iodata Cfxga Card Under Pdaxrom

Well, I can't help much, but maybe you'll find it useful. I have Pretec CompactPresenter card and once I've been able to use it with Cacko. I'd had to do several things before I got it worked because of its partial incompatibility with CFXGA. What I did:

1) Downloaded memory_cs.o from I-O-Data and put it into /lib/modules/2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3/embedix/pcmcia;

2) Corrected video mode (the problem you had with distortion - that's it, very high refresh rate, check your monitor's rate counter) by editing /home/QtPalmtop/bin/mirror.sh symlink from /usr/QtPalmtop.rom/bin/mirror.sh to /home/root/mirror.sh (you should copy file from /home/QtPalmtop/bin/ to /home/root and edit it - just replace "cfxgamirror 0" with "cfxgamirror 1").

3) Presentation used its own porgramming of VGA card, so after starting it I had to set its video output to anywhere else but VGA (composite or S-video), set mode 640x480 and run mirror program again.

I'd be very glad to try any solutions suggested because I'd like very much to use my C3000 with CompactPresenter under pdaX.

Just one question before I download and try it:

What's with sound? Really badly want   at least Adlib/SB mono sound on my Z and acceptable gaming speed.

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Zaurus C3100 And Monitor

Just my 2 cents:

1) Pretec made PocketPresenter card and I've found a way to use it on Cxxx Cacko. Then Maslovsky built the required module inside OS tarball. With pdaX and with Cxx00 - no luck.

2) IOData card had drivers for C3000, so with Sharp/Cacko it should work with Cxx00 also.

3) USB-VGA module did work, don't remember the link, though (one guy from Japan did it).

Problem is really urgent, so, if anyone is going to work on it, PM me and I'll be ready to help.

Thank you very much for advice. I'll try it as soon as I get new U-BOOT and new pdaXrom that safely works on C3K. You can (and are ought to   ) smash me into pieces for such cowardice, but I'm like that, you know - never make a step when you don't know exactly how to retreat.

Maybe USB-BT dongles will help. Or, if I'm correct, some clone of Billionton CF BT, which supports BT 1.2. I strongly suspect it's fake, but, if anyone is interested in such card, I'll post a link here.

P.S. With beta1 and Dillo my Socket BT/Nokia 6630 easily went up to 256 kbps (EDGE), so I'm almost sure it isn't software-related problem.

P.P.S. Yes, it's pretty unstable, connection ruins each 5-7 minutes, though once I was able to work ~25 minutes without problems.

PocketPenguin / Intel X86-based Development

Well, x86-compatible PDA is very reasonable thing to develop. I still like my old IBM PC110 (486SX-33/20/2G/VGA DSTN) and the only thing I really dislike is a disability to replace its CPU - it's proprietary IBM/Ricoh BGA which isn't compatible with anything else, and the lack of FPU really hurts. If I was only able to get something like that but with C3 or Transmeta CPU, 800x600 TFT screen and at least 256 Mb of RAM... that would be a dream...  Just imagine switching from Linux to DOS and playing old games...

My old (and bricked due to KB cable/connector problem ) C760 uses K9F1G08UOM, so that's why I recommended this one. So, usual Sharp serial cable won't do the trick, according to hrw site JTAG cable pinout? Then I'll have to improve my home-brew  serial cable before doing any upgrades like that - I don't want to brick one more Z.

I'm going to upgrade my C3000 and the first thing I care about is to SAVE THE ORIGINAL CHIP. I think that hot air blower with careful temperature adjusting will help to melt the glue and save the chip, maybe at 200 C or a little bit higher (chip won't desolder at temperatures lower than 180 C, if I'm correct).

Well, at 624CPU/312FSB almost everyone has got stability problems, but some serious investigations done by Maslovsky (author of Cacko ) shown that it is a problem with NAND chips, not with CPU itself, they just can't withstand such a frequency. And most of the faster chips are unknown to Z bootloader. I've been able to overclock my old C760 to 707 MHz without any stability issues, and that helped a lot with several video clips, Firefox speed and so on...

P.S. I suspect that passive cooling of NAND chips won't work either, they don't heat THAT much when overclocked, they just start to produce multiple errors.

mouse over SPP, thats the most bizare thing i have heard of. however i have seen some USB odities like that that require specific drivers even thogh they shouldnt

Cheap&dirty solution, what else did you want from these guys at Porto? Actually, I'm not 100% sure that all such mice use SPP, I'm just 100% sure they don't use HID. And I've heard that someone had managed to connect one of these mice via AirCable (on Cacko only, though, I've heard that pdaX didn't support AirCable yet).

P.S. Genius USB Bluetooth Traveller mouse is supposed to work with both built-in XP SP2 HID drivers and WM5 HID mouse profile. It works neither with XP SP2, nor with WM5, and, what's MUCH worse, there aren't even additional WM5 drivers for ANY BT mouse, either SPP or HID, with single exception of ThinkOutside Stowaway mouse, which is VERY expensive and VERY hard to get, if you're living outside US or Western Europe. And Stowaway drivers don't support any other HID mice, no-go.

Actually, many of the BT mice don't use HID profile, they use SPP instead. E.g., I have Porto BM-100BK mouse which clearly isn't HID, but I think it's possible to use it even with AirCable or other BT SPP device.

The same beta2 (actually beta1) as described there. Maybe I have a copy somewhere (host to upload it? anyone? ), maybe not. I'm waiting for universal pdaX which can install anywhere on any Z. Or, probably, I'll do NAND update a bit earlier (this damned NAND chip isn't only soldered, it's GLUED... what a hell...  ).

Well, there ARE some adapters that let you install PCMCIA cards into devices with CF slot. A friend of mine successfully used this adapter with PCMCIA modem and Ethernet cards on his Z. But with a hard disk a matter of power becomes critical - either provide you provide external power for your HDD (and risk a reasonable chance to fry your Z), or it will not work due to lack of current from CF slot.

A solid-state HDD (e.g., NAND one, like one installed on last Sony UMPCs) has a slight chance to work as-is, though.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom Beta4 For C3000

One more question, especially to sashz and ThC. Where the U-BOOT is stored? I know it replaces standard Sharp bootloader, and for now I suppose it's stored in some part of NAND. It would be very good NOT to have it on C3000's 16 Mb chip, because this chip itself can become damaged (you know these NAND things  ).


I'm going to try to replace this chip with 128 Mb one, and all I need to know now is:

Do I have any chance to do it after installation of U-BOOT and by its means? With original Sharp bootloader, as reported several testers before - no luck, it doesn't recognize empty (actually FAT16/32 formatted) NAND chip, though it DOES support this chip itself, and refuses to do anything with it, including NAND restoration.

If the answer is "yes", I'll get my hands around my hot air blower   in minutes. If no...well, it must be other way, maybe with serial cable or alike, to perform such a replacement. Sharp technicians DO know such a way, as they replace broken NAND chips on Z's.

P.S. IC programmers DON'T work with NAND.

Well, here's my first experience, unfortunately, negative one: IC programmers don't work with NAND memory at all. That leaves me to tricky and dangerous experiments with U-BOOT. I don't know any other way around - usual bootloader doesn't recognise clean NAND chip and refuses to do anything with it.
