Accessories / Sharp Stylus CE-SLP1 Fits in C860?
« on: February 28, 2004, 05:07:59 pm »
The 5500 stylus is the same size/shape as the SL860. So if it fits the 5500/5600, should be fine.

Cxx0 General discussions / Warning - Tetsu kernel doesn\'t work on SL-C860
« on: February 28, 2004, 03:13:34 pm »
At least not for me! I did a NAND backup of the cacko QTopia ROM and then loaded the Tetsu kernel (following the instructions contained in http://viz.aset.psu.edu/ga5in/SharpZaurus.html ).

The zaurus started booting and then exited I believe the rfmodules with a -2 and hung there. Several retries and same thing.

I resorted to my first ever NAND recover which sort of worked. I had to first reformat my CF as FAT 16 (I think it was FAT 32) and then put the NAND file onto it.

After all that, back to where I was...killed an hour or so and caused undue agida!

None - I use secure IMAP which isn\'t supported at all, so I use an SSH connection to my mail server and run Pine.

Mac Issues / Poll: Which Zaurus model do you use with your Mac?
« on: February 26, 2004, 01:12:40 pm »
I had a 5500 for a year and a half and now have an SL-C860. Won\'t go back! \"Using\" with the Mac is limited so far. I have a cross-compiler set up on OSX for the zaurus and I tweaked one qtopia app to change screen sizing, but I\'m not a qt developer. I am doing some java development for the zaurus using Netbeans on the Mac but as for synching, I don\'t at home - only at work with Win2k.

I use a card reader on the IMac to transfer files - simple and easy for me.

Mac Issues / compiling on a Linux-Mac ?
« on: February 23, 2004, 04:03:43 pm »
I was able to cross-compile QTopia on the mac. The shell scripts provided on the site above are TCSH so if you are running bash on the mac you either need to convert them or go into tcsh first.

Philly/NJ / Local Zauruites?
« on: February 20, 2004, 07:52:54 pm »
Great to meet you too. There are at least two near me! I ordered my 860 with a friend at work and we negotiated a decent deal from an importer we saw on Ebay - got the shipping reduced and got a discount for cash. I\'ve been using various Linuxes since pre 1.0, tons of Windows software and most recently went to Mac OS/X. So the Zaurus feels to me what a Mac PDA ought to be  With recent rumors though, looks like Apple might actually produce a PDA at some point.

This seems a pretty dead region - hope I\'m wrong!  I\'m in the lehigh valley and on my second Zaurus - used a 5500 for a long time, now a SL-C860 I get imported from Japan. Still the coolest hardware around!

Software / Qt/XServer questions
« on: February 20, 2004, 04:39:47 pm »
http://xqt.sourceforge.jp/download.html is the site where you can download the server and alot of software for it. Not much to it.

Download the server, the font file of your choice, a window manager (I use blackbox), gtk/glib if needed and you\'re good to go.

Still have my questions though:

1. How do I run this in \"rootless\" mode?
2. How do I get remote X apps to display their fonts in normal sizes?

I always watch with interest The Cacko X11 effort, but this is more a solution for me. Its analagous to my I-Mac with Aqua and XWindows. I have a good GUI (Qtopia) with XWindows when/if I need it. I prefer mixing the best of commercial and open source when and where I want it.

It seems that every time you play with the brightness, it gets overwritten though!
The file is in /home/zaurus/Settings.

Software / Qt/XServer questions
« on: February 17, 2004, 11:42:33 pm »
I got the Qt/X Server working pretty well on my SL-C860, but have a few questions. I got blackbox running and local applications run fine. When I run remote X applications from my Mandrake box, the fonts are wacked - like one menu item filling the entire screen! Any idea why remote windows would be off like that? Also, how do you run it in \"rootless\" mode? I noticed that keyhelper had some problems running with the X Server so I uninstalled it for now. Overall though its very impressive!

TIA,
 Mike

I have a server PII/400 Mhz - Mandrake 9.2 running as IMAP server, DSL router and PostgresSQL server. A Debian unstable laptop - for fun - old Toshiba Portege PII/300 Mhz

And non -Linux: IMac 1Ghz OS/X - with cross compiler for Zaurus and Netbeans for java.
P166 Windows 98 PC mainly for kids.

Cxx0 Hardware / SL-C860 Charger and amperage
« on: February 12, 2004, 04:46:38 pm »
I have been using my 5500 chargers on my SL-C860 instead of the somewhat flimsy 100 volt charger that shipped with it. I just realized though that the chargers are 2 amps whereas the 860 charger is 1 amp.
I\'m curious if this has any detrimental effects on battery life?

I just recently had to replace my old 5500 battery since its life seemed to be getting progressively shorter between charges (after over a year of heavy use, so no complaints).

I use it with two hands \"on the go\" typing with thumbs or I peck with a few fingers when its on a desk. If I need one-handed operation (no porn jokes please!), I fold it into \"keyboardless\" mode (great for reading e-books for example). I had the 5500 previously and find this much easier. It took a little while to get used to the keyspace differences, but its a huge improvement.

Before the 6000 comes out, get a 760 or 860. After the 6000 comes out, get a 760 or 860! I can\'t believe how brain-dead Sharp is about the US market. They should have put the bluetooth and wireless into the 860 for their \"enterprise version\". When the keyboard is open, I want landscape not portrait. I just don\'t get the 6000 at all. I had a 5500 and lept at the 860. I do agree with Sharp that they are not going to take the retail market by storm, so either quit or put their best product in the market.

What is the idle parameter you added? A friend of mine has the same card for his SLC860 and has timeout problems. He resorted to running a background \"ping\" session.
