General Discussion / Help! Need To Reinstall Qtopia On My C1000.

Have him grab the C1000 original NAND back up from Conics - http://downloads.conics.net/pda/zaurus-sl-...iginal-backups/ - and do a NAND restore.

Will only take about 15 minutes to have a vanilla C1000 again

Software / Zaurus Sl-c760- Need Help

Hi everyone, I am new to this PDA thing! I have a Zaurus SL-C760, and every thing is in Japanese. My question is how do I change the language from Japanes, to English?

Also, I don't have the software to install on my computer so that I can plug it in to my zaurus, is there a website that can get the driver software for my computer from, so I can install the program?

Welcome to OESF and the world of Zaurus!

There are several options available to change from Japanese to English (depending on whether you want to keep Japanese abiltiy):

1. Install an alternative ROM - ie Cacko - has the option to add Japanese support
2. Change /home/zaurus/Settings/locale.conf to read 'en' or 'zh_TW' instead of 'ja' for the language setting.
3. Remove the qm translation files in /home/QtPalmtop/i18n/ja and comment out the various lines in .desktop files that have the japanese names of programs. I wrote a script that does this and it basically follows the info here http://mspencer.net/stuff/c700conv.html

I would suggest option 1. especially if you are not interested in using Japanese, but WARNING it means flashing a new ROM. Something that could stop your zaurus working correctly (although it is something that many people have successfully done many times - myself included)

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Restarting After A "shutdown -h 1"

I remember from way back in the days the C7xx came out that there was a number of threads on this topic. I can't seem to find them now, but it had something to do with the way the power button is wired. The Z is not designed to be shutdown, but suspended.

The power button doesn't actually power on the device, and when shutdown the unit can't receive the signal from the button. Removing the battery puts the unit back in a state where it can receive the power button signal.

The take home message that I got from the discussion was - don't use shutdown unless you are willing to pull the battery to restart.

C1000/3x00 Hardware / C1000 Keeps Suspending When Not Plugged In

This sound like the Cacko backligh bug. Do you have the backlight set to the lowest setting? If so then for some reason the backlight is turned off when you adjust screen size.
It looks like the Zaurus is suspended, but if look at it it closely in the right light setting you can just see that it is actually on. The answer is to leave the brightness set one step above the lowest setting.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / I Need Some Help

1) Plug the CF card into the zaurus
2) Make sure the usb cable is NOT connected to zaurus
3) Go to the Settings tab and click on the PC Link icon
4) Under "Mode Settings" select "Storage" and change the pull down box to "CF Memory Card"
5) Click "Okay" button to close app
6) Suspend the Z and plug the usb cable into the Z and the PC
7) Wake the Z up, and you should find that the PC now has an external drive - the Z's CF card.

Depending on which version of Windows you are running you may need to install some drivers, but XP and up should already have them installed. If you are running Linux, you can mount the CF card as you would any other usb storage device.

They are violating the GPL, since you don't get the kernel sources for the actual kernel that runs on the devices. It's obvious from e.g. the tosa sources. If you compile the kernel using the same compiler and config you will get the orange lines issues, which the sharp kernel doesn't have. That's a clear indicator that source doesn't match the binary 100%. If it doesn't match, it's a GPL violation.

Speculatrix, I assume you are referring to the same problem as koen.

I have no experience with the Sl-6000 (or any other American only version of the Zaurus) so I can't comment on any potential GPL violation by Sharp US. I googled for any info on this, but the only thing I came up was a comment on slashdot by Speculatrix

Even the Sharp Zaurus, until recently one of the few handhelds which came with linux out of the box still has proprietary/closed-source elements - the SD driver is one example. One of the biggest missing pieces of the jigsaw is an accelerated video driver for the Zaurus SL-6000 series - there's a Toshiba TC6393XB chip for which virtually no documentation is available (it also drives the SD card slot, so presumably Toshiba didn't want to release the programmers guide for fear of giving out information on that somewhat proprietary standard).

If you feel this is a GPL violation then it should be addressed to [a href=\"http://gpl-violations.org/]GPL-violations.org[/url] as they have a pretty decent track record of stopping GPL violations.

Sharp ROMs / Cacko 1.24 - A Wishlist

To clarify, Sharp violated the GPL and did not release full sources to their hacked kernel. If you changed to 2.6 EABI none of the sharp code would run, thereby defeating the point of Cacko as you might as well use OpenZaurus or Angstrom with Opie!

Also, the version of qtopia is proprietary version 1.5, it just happens that you can use version 1.7 for developing s/w.

Sorry, I have to call BS on this one. Sharp did NOT violate the GPL. They haven't been as generous as they could have been, but you can get the full sources of the kernel and their patches to the GPL-ed code from the Japanese Sharp site[1]. What they did not release was the proprietary code for things such as SD drivers. As they most probably have to sign non-disclosure agreements to get their hands on the SD driver code it is not surprising that they never released it.

What we don't have access to is the source code that makes up the rest of the ROM, but as you have mentioned they use a proprietary version of qtopia 1.5 and what software that they taken from GPL code they give the source code for [2],[3]. I know for a fact that Sharp Japan takes GPL violation seriously as I have met with a number of the people who worked there when I lived in Japan. Sharp may not be as free with their code as we might like, but you will find that they have stuck to the letter of the GPL - if not the intent. There are a number of modules or applications that some people think are GPLed but as yet I have heard of no solid evidence that this is the case and even a thread on lists.gpl-violations didn't give a definitive answer [4].

I have written to Sharp Japan previously when they hadn't posted the kernel source for the 860 after what I thought was a reasonable time and although they came up with a face saving excuse, I think it was a case of somebody forgot to post rather than anything else. If you think I'm wrong on any of my points, please let me know as I'm a firm believer in the GPL and feel that it must be enforced when it's being violated.

Software / Flash Card Program For Testing Vocabulary?

I have attempted both, but so far failed in either case.  I think anki is doable once python-pyqt4 compiles.  mnemosyne seems to be very nice as a program but uses some insane compilation setup that does not lend itself to cross-compilation.  The author is not willing to use anything else.

mnemosyne is a python program - what insane compilation does your version do? Mine just copies python scripts to the python directory.

I'll try setting up python on my Z again and see if I can get ti to work - something to do on the train

I do get the menu... as stupid as this newbie question will sound... now what ?

Now you should be able to put your battery back in, close the cover and switch it back to lock. Then on page 2 of the D+M menu (use the up/down buttons to change pages) there are 3 items related to battery: 5. low battery, 6. Batt Voltage Adjust and 10. Charge

5. Low Battery - shows the current Battery voltage and some other info
6. Batt Voltage Adjust - takes you to another page that gives you
 1. Battery Voltage Adj
 2. Battery Voltage Check
These allow you to play with the battery voltage, but I've lost my reference that had info on how to use them  Maybe someone else can help. Beware of the adj option you can do some weird things to your battery with that.
10. Charge - takes you to a screen with 3 small boxes and 1 large boxes - the small boxes are "Full", "Half" and "Off" and the large box says "Exit". Clicking on the small boxes turns the charge light on/off and from memory charges the battery to Full or Half level - again I'm working from memory here.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but hopefully this will be of some help (and possibly searching the forums will give you more useful advice)

Sharp ROMs / Fix Broken English

Most of the time the qm files are fro languages other than English. The conversion from Japanese to English is done by removing the Japanese .qm files so that qtopia is forced to use the default labels, menus etc. These are usually in English, however if the applications were made by non-native English speakers (or lazy native English programmers) then you get some innovative uses of the English language.

In the C760, C860 and C1000 Japanese roms there were no English qm files, just Japanes ones.
