Cxx0 Hardware / Car mount
« on: October 17, 2004, 03:30:26 am »
Use it myself. Bottom pic is actually from my car. Would not recommend you go rallying in it, but for "normal use" it is fine.

My advice for all mounts that are using some kind of arm, unless it is very short.

You need the mount to make a good contact with some surface close to the device end. Otherwise you tend to get too much bounce.

Use common sense if trying to use zaurus while driving ...

I actually ended up moving the mount from the center widscreen area to driver side.  It is a tight fit, but just managed to get it in there while still resting the back of the mount. A couple of twists in the windscreen arm was needed but it works great.
Might actually be ok for rallying now, since pillar should prevent zaurus flyig out when landing, but don't intend to try it

Reason for moving it was that I found myself leaning forward when using it with qpegps due to small text size.

At new location, screen is closer and keyboard entry is very much more relaxed.

I've put my camera "Somewhere Safe" at the moment so can't find it. Otherwise, would have taken another pic...

By the way, qpegps is ok, but still a little buggy. Could do with some faster moving developers. Current ones obviously have a lot of real work to do and so updates are a little sparse.

Also, just sold my C860, hoping this will still work with the new C3000, but size changes might kill it...

General Discussion / Zaurus suitable for non-geeks?
« on: October 16, 2004, 06:08:37 pm »
When asked this kind of question, my answer is usually not suitable for the Beginner/Novice.

Usual question I ask is would you be ok having to use the command prompt on the odd occation (not in normal use). If so, should be fine.

As you have said you are ok with doing a bit of JavaScript/HTML, I'd say you were over qualified

Funny thing is, had some people that ask if it would be appropriate for them that would not even know what Java/html is. But the unit was still ok for them. Since they only wanted to do basic things with it, they never needed any of the "difficult bits". Just wanted a high res screen and keyboard.

Well, sold my personal C860, and planning to get a C3000.

I reckon I'll get one of those SD WiFi cards that is on the horizon.

This way, I have WiFi, and a free CF slot for bluetooth or other peripherals at the same time without worrying about finding storage space.

Shame they have gone back to Barbie white again...

The 64 Mb is the same as for the current C860. For actual running of apps. i.e. PC type conventional ram.

Anyone know what the "port" on the back is. The one that looks like it is an SD slot but isn't ?

Info I received was not that detailed.

As I said

All I'll say is, assuming info I am getting is accurate, it may not be quite what you expected/hoped. Some unexpected pros, some disappointments.

I was told USB Host, but can't see it mentioned in specs. Perhaps it is a case of no drivers means no point till they have some etc.

I was hoping the unit would stay the same size, shape. That way, all accessories would be compatible. Looks like they have changed it just enough to stop cases, mounts etc. from working. Shame...

General Discussion / Sharp C-860 VS Sony UX-50
« on: October 13, 2004, 02:58:30 am »
If you were talking about the Sony U50, then it would be a different matter

Don't have a UX50 but know people that do...

UX50 Pros.

1. Built in WifI/Bluetooth.
2. Very small package.
3. Bigger (easy to access) software/peripheral base.
4. Camera (But you might as well get a camera phone)

UX50 Cons

1. Don't like the keyboard, flush, hard to press buttons (compared to zaurus).
2. You have a choice of Landscape with keyboard or Landscape without.
3. Charging solution is a pain (I'm told). Friend mostly carries it around with a 3rd party cradle.
4. Sony Propriatry tech. (reinvent the wheel our way Memory Stick).

Zaurus Pros.

1. Excellent Screen with double the screen res. 640x480 v 480x320
2. Both Landscape and Portrait
3. Much better keyboard
4. Better expansion flexibility with CF + WiFi
5. Some serious "Heavy Duty" applications available

Zaurus Cons

1. No Built in Wireless
2. Since SD is memory only, can't use 2 peripherals at the same time (can be problem with no WiFi/bluetooth)
3. Software side fragmented. No "Unified ROM" to give access to standard and X environment.

For me, the Zaurus wins Hands Down. I can "live with" lack of built in WiFi/Bluwtooth.

Only thing I really miss is the lack of a good Navigation application for use with my GPS unit.

If it doesn't have to fit in your pocket and you have loads of money get a U50/U70.
Sorry, currently playing with them, so cool...

Security and Networking / Bluetooth DUN not working ... please help
« on: October 11, 2004, 12:29:27 pm »

Sounds like you have made all the changes needed ...

Don't have a T630, but do have a T610 and that works fine with DUN and Zaurus, so can't see any reason why T630 should be any different.

Have you checked the basics. Switch off/restart both Phone and Zaurus (reboot) jut in case something has got stuck.

I know sometimes, the bluetooth connection would misbehave if you had trouble with it already.

Also, might be worth deleting the Zaurus Pairing on the phone if you already have one and temporarily unhiding the phone.

Sorry I can't give more specific help...

ELSI General Discussion / Has ZSI died?
« on: October 11, 2004, 11:55:00 am »
I was referring to updated list of Zaurus apps.

But since ZSI has been updated with a few entries, hopefully, it will be getting back on track as well...

Here is a link someone forwarded to me.

Just to point out, I've not actually seen the new unit. So this may just be a proto...

Just a reminder, don't expect it on the shelves tomorrow.

Sorry, my plan was to "reveal all".

It is only after I posted that I got told the "Keep It Quite" clause. Anyway, it should not be a long wait till an announcement at least. Quite a bit longer to actual realease of course.

General Discussion / Bluetooth - what is the better way
« on: October 04, 2004, 07:47:14 pm »
With the Aircable, most of it is sticking out, with only a small portion (the connector) keeping it in the unit.

So not practical to just leave it plugged in when storing away etc. Just wasn't intended to be used that way...
