Debian / How To Install Debian On Your Zaurus (obsolete)
« on: November 05, 2007, 04:18:28 am »
Quote from: ZDevil
Q16: I am using a Cxx0 or C1000. How can I install Debian EABI to my SD card?

A16: The installation comes in two parts. 1. Install the Angstrom kernel & Angstrom system; 2. Install the Debian EABI system
Note:
-- If your Zaurus is already running with uboot (such as the new pdaXrom versions), then you have to do a NAND Restore to revert to the factory stock rom in order to flash this kernel.
-- If you want to keep using uboot, go to Q20 now.
-- The 2.6.22 kernel (2.6.23 yet to be verified) has troubles with altboot, so don't use it for now unless you know how to solve the problems.

Go back to the main list.

Many thanks for the guide! But still lost ...

Ok, here I am. I want to have Debian EABI on my C860. Q16 is my starting point.
Yes, I am the problem child :-).

Where can I find an angstrom 2.6.21 system to download? Or can I use Poky instead? Or did anybody try the november edition of angstrom?

Thank you all

I am going to put the bits in this thread together into one coherent howto (installation procedure for all C-series models) during the weekend.

Ahh, what an announcement! I'll keep re-checking here every few hours!

I'm currently desiging a leitner app as a local web server using a browser (curses if you like) as the interface, primarily for heisig, but should be flexible enough for general use
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=166972\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Nice news! My main concern is about speed. I have yet to find a program as fast as real index cards, esp. if it comes to going over vocabulary you more or less know.
That's why I'm looking into curses instead of a "nice" GUI. Speed!  Don't know if a browser based solution will cut it there.

All these programs are GUI oriented. Does anybody of you know of a curses based flash program
(using the Leitner-methodology) ?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Fixes For R198/r197

one question -- for these SPs.... the ones for 198 are the ones for 700/860, correct?

Also, do I have to apply sp1, then sp2, then 3... or just sp5?

It seems like I just do "sp5" ... right? no others before?

197 seems for 700/860 and you do just  SP5

hi Meanie, are your patches good for sl-c860?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=162347\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
it should work, but untested due to lack of said device...[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=162351\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
They've worked ok for me so far, except for the issues that Meanie's fixed already. Back up first & the n see how it goes. That's waht I've done.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=162377\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

So you have R197 + sp3 running? Just to be sure before flashing ...

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxii13 Usage

if anyone with a c7x0 or c8x0 has upgraded to pdaXii13 yhey could in theory generate a flashable initrd.bin using zbackup and upload it as pdaXii13 Charlie base...

Is there some guidance to do such a move? Would very much like to follow you, but my vehicle is just a little 860er.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Xpdf Zoom Levels
« on: March 26, 2007, 03:52:09 pm »

I have the latest xpdf 3.0.1-1 installed and want to know if there is a way to get a zoom level between 100% and 125% ?
As shown in the screenshots below in meanie's zbook3k.pdf, there is extra space being wasted (at 100%) in the margins.
At this zoom level, the text is tiny.
If I zoom to 125%, the zoom level is too much and now I have to scroll horizontally, but the text is much more readable.
I would like to see zoom levels in increments of:
105%
110%
115%
120%

pic 1 (xpdf @ 100%)
pic 2 (xpdf @ 125%)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=157209\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I use the command line xpdf -z 111 my.pdf to get i.e. 11% magnification.
If you read a longer book that you start repeatedly an alias will work fine.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Programs For Scientific Usage
« on: March 21, 2007, 05:10:50 am »
Hi,

after having unsuccessfully tried to compile R on my cacko/Xqtrom Zaurus 860
I´m more than willing to flash pdaXrom and install that lovely language for on the road usage :-) Thank you!

But one question remains: Which pdaXrom should I flash on my Z?
Does the old pdaXrom suffice or do I need one of the newer ones?
Which one is most promising for an 860? Are these pdaXroms binary compatible?
(I guess not, but must admit I find it hard to follow  all those different versions for different machines.)

Or is it wise to wait another week or two and then having a 2.6 kernel based brand new stable pdaXrom?

Thx for any hints!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Any Good Outliner Apps Available?
« on: March 15, 2007, 04:41:13 am »
For my workflow the vimoutliner fits best.
See vimoutliner.org

Obviously it´s a vim extension, so may be some learning required ;-)

For the rest ZDevils remarks for the command line apply here, too.

Software / Gobolinux On The Z
« on: February 15, 2007, 04:26:16 am »
After playing around with my Z for only a few weeks I´m now looking for a way to dive into developing.
Gobolinux http://gobo.kundor.org/wiki/Main_Page seems similar to gentoo. they have announced an arm port of their distribution  http://gobo.kundor.org/wiki/GoboLinux_Embe...g_GoboLinux-ARM
complete with a seemingly nice toolchain. Is there a HOWTO or something to build/use a kernel for my zaurus 860 with this distribution. Or should I let my fingers away, if I need a HOWTO for such an experiment? :-)

Perhaps I can combine this question with a more general one: I've successfully build some applications in my cacko/Xqt setup but the 2.4 kernels seems to get old and I´d like to have a 2.6er for the reports of snappier operation. What toolchain and distribution would you recommend?

Waiting for the next pdaxrom? Angstrom? They seem to do a lot of things "the right way".
Something else like gentoo/gobo? Is there any way to streamline repositories, so that say a packages compiled with softfloat can easily be recompiled as a hardfloat one and can be used in different roms?

Any pointers to documentation of the current status of Z developement with respect to setting up toolchains and roms are highly appreciated.

And by the way: Thx to everybody in here! The Z community is a nice place to be.

Security and Networking / Best Way To Transfer Files To The Z Over A Netwok

I have an Ubuntu box with no monitor that control with VNC with my Zaurus. I would like to be able to easily transfer files from there to my Z in a secure manner. What would be the best way of doing this?

Thanks.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=154046\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

My tool of choice is rsync + ssh. Works like a charm and no need to mount.

(Btw: Are there fuse and sshfs for the Z?)

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Unionfs
« on: January 13, 2007, 10:50:23 am »
What mars wrote 7 months ago is so true! Is anybody working on a unionfs based distro for any of the Zs? Unionfs is on its way into the regular kernel and would solve a lot of inconveniencies. Seems there is something going on in the spanish channel, but I can´t understand that language :-(

User Request for Applications / Chessdb - Possible To Compile?
« on: January 13, 2007, 10:44:53 am »
Hi,

I´d really like to see chessdb http://chessdb.sourceforge.net running on my Z.

As far as I can see it depends on tcl/tk and c++. I´d try myself, but I´m still searching my way into crosscompiling and and trying to learn with smaller applications.
(and having difficulties with softfloat/hardfloat and cacko and pdaxqtrom)

Has anybody fun looking into chessdb?

X/Qt / No Question Mark In Abiword (pdaxqtrom)

I think it's shift + / to give you "?" ... let me check ...

EDIT: Just tried ... its shift + "?." key ...  ... on my C1000 anyway ...
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=150005\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Believe or not, I had found the key with no problems,   but it does _nothing_ in abiword.
xev shows that a "?" is sent, it works in other applications including vim/nedit/aterm but not in abiword. I can insert a ? with insert->symbol, but that´s rather unsatisfying.
