Ahh, thank you for the responses!

The beam recieve is always set at manual as I never use it, but I did check...

Then I tried the ir modem connect without anything out there to connect to. \'Course it failed... Then I tried to reconnect and got the \"Beam device is busy\". Fine...

Then I entered in the above command. result:

Shutting down IrDa: killall: irattach: no process killed

Then I try the connect again, and \"Beam device is busy\"...

In case it wasn\'t clear. This connection is through the network \'Globe\" for an IR modem connection set up through the Network settings.

I don\'t see any new processes running in  WhatUponZ...

And I do have Lirc installed but I\'m pretty sure I had this problem long before I instaleld that... ANd I can run lirc programs like mode2 and they still work when the Z is giving this error for the net connection.

Any other ideas? I hope...

Well, thanks for the reply. I thought maybe someone would at least let me know if a software/system setup could cause such a problem. Maybe not...

And to continue the bad news, I bought a Socket low power card as a replacement. Turns out there\'s a \"Rev B\" that doesn\'t work with the Z... That\'s what I get for buying quick and not researching a second time like I did the first time...

Now I have a LinkSys card coming. I haven\'t heard of any new revisions to that card and I didn\'t want to buy another Dlink...

But on the possible bright side. I haven\'t returned the Dlink yet (oh, just a great company to deal with...) and I decided to give it another try last night. But this time I gave the card a good \"bend\" in both directions. Not enough to break it ;-) Just a \'bend\'... Plugged it in and it worked for an hour or so. It didn\'t stop working, I did... So it\'s either got a loose connection, bad solder joint, or some part of it was touching something it shouldn\'t... But now that it works, it will be difficult to have it repaired...

And since I got zero replies to my inquiry about getting the Socket 6004 card working, I\'ll have to try to trturn that one... And I though linux people kept on top of new hardware? Oh-well....

Okay, I made a major screw-up. After my D-Link 660 blew up, I just ran and ordered a new card. Prices all about the same, so I ordered the Socket low power card. It\'s supposed to work great after all... But not the new version.... That\'s what I get for not keeping up...

I\'ve searched & read dozens of posts from people in similar situations, non posted about getting the card to work...

So, has anyone ever gotten this new rev B card to work?  This is the card that reports:

Product info: \"Socket\", \"CF+ LP WLAN Card Rev B\"
manfid: 0x0156, 0x0003

Supposed to have the \'agere\'(sp??) chipset...

I\'m not sure it\'s returnable after opening? And who wants to order yet another card...

General Discussion / Searching for an hour. Web Audio Streaming. HELP !

As far as I know, you can rule out realaudio right away. There\'s nothing on the Z that can play it.

I don\'t know of any browser plug-ins for streaming audio...

The only hope that I know of is net-radio. They broadcast in shoutcast and ogg formats. Well, other formats too, but the Z likes ogg and shoutcast. So if you can find what you want in that format, you can listen to it. If not, you\'re probably out of luck unless someone comes up with something new...

Now that my wifi card is dead, I\'ve tried to connect with my IR modem to get my updates. This normally works just fine. I have everything set up and working. But, if it doesn\'t hook up right with the modem, the Z seems to keep the \"Beam Device\" as \"Busy\" and I can\'t try to reconnect. Last time this happened I finally did a reboot to get back the beam device.

There must be a way to free the \'beam device\' without doing a reboot? Anyone know how? Anyone know if there\'s a fix that might prevent this from happening?

User Request for Applications / A server free Instant Messenger for wifi pda\'s.

Why \"non-standard\"? Winpopup uses _standard_ samba message send/receive! And it\'s already built-in both the win and linux machines. Al we\'d need is a user interface. Although I haven\'t figured out how to receieve on the Z yet and that may need some help with a full samba server. But, we already have that too!

The problem of running any kind of server has already been addressed, and it won\'t work!

I\'d just like to place my vote for this! Great idea and I\'d even be happy to buy it!

I\'d like something like the old windows winpopup. No server, no IP address, just a name. And you can broadcast to a group or to everyone, a great way to let people know you\'re there.

I can\'t help with linux development right now (lost yet another computer), but I\'d be happy to help with win development and any testing!

Before I try returning it for warranty repair, I thought I\'d give asking here a shot in case I\'m missing something obvious (which very often happens)...

I plugged my D-Link 660W card into my 5600 last night for some net updating. As soon as I plugged it in, I noticed some screen lines and the Z was locked up. I didn\'t want to just pull the card out so I did a hard reset. The Z came back up as normal, but the 660 won\'t be recognised now...

Now if I insert the card one of two things happen. I get the screen noise and lock up, which will go away if I pull the card out...
Or, the card\'s light stays lit and it won\'t be recognised by the Z.

I played with cardctl (suspend, resume, reset, insert, eject, ident) and all seem to work except the ident. Only once out of dozens of tries did I get an ident on the card and almost a network connection. Then the card failed again and I couldn\'t repeat it...

My memory cards work just fine and so does the camera card. So it looks like the Z is okay. But is there any software config that could produce this with the 660? If not, then it hopefully goes back for repair... I just don\'t want to send it back if it\'s something in the Z from being reset?

You\'d have to talk to someone who has coded for a keyboard. You need a traslation program and I don\'t know of any... Would be interesting and I think you\'d have to settle for hex. You have to remember that irda is not ascii or hex in nature. It\'s simply a series of pulses. It\'s the software that has to turn the pulses into a human or machine readable format...

if you install lirc , try running mode2 from the command line. Does that do what you want?

you could try qmode2, which need lirc to work. It works great on my 5600 but whether or not it will do what you wnat, I don\'t know?

I wish I could say if it worked on a c7xx! ;-)

I use it constantly on my 5600 though and it\'s great. The current version does have two minor problems though. The first is that the speech option doesn\'t work if you use a compressed cache. The author is supposed to come up with a fix for that soon. The second is that it rarely had a problem with certain sites. Apparently some pages would give the wrong response and Zepo would sit and wait forever. It could use a timeout... On the other hand, since adding two more RSS feeds and switching to an uncompressed cache, I haven\'t had the timeout problem...

I hope it works for you. I love it, especially having it sit there and read the news to me! ;-)

The author is responsive to e-mail by the way!

Clciked just a minute too soon... I just received the new version of Zepo from the author, now version 2.4a. Installed & works great...
