also about dropping the microdrive...  my c3k survived a fall down my concrete staircase (maybe 15-20 steps).  It was inside a PDAir leather case but i really doubt that helped much.  It bounced a few times on the way down.

I guess maybe my friend was jealous of my new pda, and that was enough reason to let it fall on the staircase? lol

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Can You Defrag The C3k?
« on: May 08, 2005, 09:14:56 am »
Hello everyone.
Just out of curiosity, I've had my Z for over a month now, most of the time just testing its ability to act as a video/mp3 player.  And i´ve gone through quite a lot of writing and deleting large (300 mb+ video files), and adding mp3 files in between. so i'm sure my hdd3 partition should be quite fragmented.

Can you defrag the microdrive inside the SL-3000? And if you could, is it worth the hassle?

thank you.

Hi,

I've compiled the latest version of the InfoNES emulator, version 0.94J. Just install the .ipk and you can run InfoNES from the shell by using: InfoNES romname.nes.

You can download it here: http://www.annavanrijn.nl/~ferdyvanv/zaurus/

The controls are:
- Arrows - D-pad
- X - A
- Z - B
- S - Start
- A - Select

- Q - Quit
- R - Reset
- M - Mute (The emulator is a little bit faster without sound)

Enjoy playing your old NES classics

Greets,
Ferdy

Hello Ferdy,

I tried the emulator and it works on my SL-C3k, as you mentioned the animation is a bit choppy, i hope to get past it if i can overclock my Z (I'm still looking into that), anyway, i just wanted to ask if you knew how to make the emulator work fullscreen, it's really tiny on my screen.

I tried to look up commandline options but i can´t find anything that even remotely resembles that (I don´t speak nor read japanese so the html that comes with it doesn´t really help).

Thanks

1) Play DivX (or comparable MPEG4) at 640x480.

Plays MPEG4 just fine
How'd you do that?  Like kahm, I've only gotten 320x240.  But they play beautifully at 29.97 fps.

I've been using PSPVideo9 to do the encoding, although I'm sure there are other fine pgms out there.  Thsi one seems to be the most trouble-free for me.

Rickh,
I DLed PSPVideo9 and encoded the files but they don´t work.  what extension do you change them to? *.avi?

Also, what settings do you use?  Thank you!

C1000/3x00 Hardware / C1000 Battery Charging Never Stop!
« on: April 27, 2005, 09:39:59 pm »
my SL-C3k takes a really long time to charge. at least 5 or 6 hours till the light goes off.

Another thing that bugs me is that the battery applet doesn´t show how much juice is really left.  i get the low battery warning at when the applet says 1/2. and i know that by the use i´ve given it, it might be possible it really spent it´s battery.

Is there another way to find how much battery is left? maybe with another program?

thanks.

I always thought i never needed a PDA... Palms were ugly with crappy 160x160 screens... till Sony decided to offer them with black and white 320x320 screens.  then i bought one.

Then i thought, I don´t really need a color screen, nor mp3 support, nor gorgeus HVGA screen... till the Clié TH55 came out. and i bought one and was happy with it.

Then sony decided to bail out of the PDA market... and I thought, I don´t need another pda, this Clie is good enough.  it more than fits my needs... Then I heard about the Zaurus, but decided not to buy because it was too expensive... till I was in Japan.

when i saw them, i thought i didn´t need a 4 gb microdrive... till i played with one and say the quasi-infinite potential of it.

In a year or two when 4 GB CF cards come cheap enough i might probably say... "I don´t need to mod my SL-C3k by changing the microdrive with a CF card.... it´s good enough the way it is..."

I´m not sure if this is what you want (i'm a linux n00b):

The root password is what you have to type to access your Zaurus if you put the lock on it when it turns back on.

if you can tell me what the filename is, i can try to send it to you when i get home.

I bought the C3000.

I let mine charge over night not because i should have or because it said so, it's just that dinner took longer than expected that night.

I used the conversion from trisoft.de.  it even includes de K/A Pi PIM software and the latest sharp music player v2 (i'm not totally sure about the player though, but the PIM software is in)

I haven´t been able to get mplayer (kino2) to work.  Partly because i´m a linux n00b and because i´ve been too busy to play with my toy (I´m quite sure a large majority of us users out there refer to it as a toy rather than a work tool, am i right???).

My SL-C3k has taken 1 major fall already and it still works.  The story goes like this...

I asked my friend to bring my PDA from my room (since she was on the 2nd floor of my house) and I was on the phone on the 1st floor.  At the top of the stairs, and as she's fumbling to find the switch in the dark (because she knows how much i love my pda, and doesn´t want to stumble and have it fall), my Zaurus, my beloved Zaurus falls a complete set of concrete stairs (maybe 17-22 steps).

Fortunately it still works, and it didn´t get scratched because of the leather case.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Sync Issues Sl-c3k & Win Xp Sp2
« on: April 25, 2005, 09:45:15 am »
Hello everyone,
I read on the forums that to sync a SL-C3k with a pc

1) install japanese drivers,
2) install English version of PCSoft.  make a copy of the folder
3) once that´s installed you can test the connection by telnetting to the Zaurus.
4) Uninstall english version.
5) Install the japanese version of pcsoft, then you rewrite with a copy of the installed folder of the english version.

I´m basically stuck at  step 1.  The installation went smoothly. The OS picked up the hardware, asked for the drivers, and installed.  It all seemed ok, the problem came when I reboot my machine and replugged in my zaurus.

When I do that on my XP pc, the icon to remove/unplug USB hardware and so does the icon for the new network connection comes up, but it has a little exclamation sign next to it, when i click on it: (this is the rough english translation) "no IP could be assigned to the PC, that the connection is not good and there might not be any internet on the network."

The network icon for the Zaurus doesn´t have the big red X you get when the computer is unplugged from the network, it´s just a yellow exclamation mark.  So I guess there´s maybe a partial connection (if such a thing ever exists).

I can´t telnet nor even ping my zaurus (yes i checked I was in PC Link setting)

When I tried to uninstall the driver for the Zaurus, while the zaurus is plugged in, I get an error that it can´t be uninstalled.  something that the zaurus might be needed to boot the pc so it doesn´t allow me to uninstall it.  However it disappears from the hardware list after the message.  If I unplug the zaurus, then the icon for the network adapter for the zaurus isn´t there, so i can´t remove it.

I tried to install the software on a Win ME computer, and the computer can telnet to the zaurus, but I can´t install the japanese software, apparently the OS does not recognize the other folders required to install when the OS is in spanish and the CD is in japanese.  So I get stuck on step 5...

Is there a way to install the sync for the Zaurus in either machine?

Thank you.

Build quality wise, they're both good.  I have the C3k, but to be honest, i liked the black C1k.  If i had the money i would have bought both, swaped the innards and sold the C1k with the white exterior.

I chose the C3K for the 4 GB.  Those $200 will only get you 2 GB and a bit more in Flash cards.  I was a sony Clié fanatic so i didn´t have and SD or CF, that´s why I took the 4 GB. and now that i have it, i don´t regret it one bit.

I went on a trip with a friend, his camera´s CF got full before the end of the trip, so we copied everything into my Zaurus and freed the CF card for more pictures.

It also gives you lots of space for mp3s.  no need to keep changing cards for different music.  Theoretically it would be the same if you wanted to watch videos, but i haven´t had the time to install the video player codecs.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / How Good An Mp3 Player?
« on: April 23, 2005, 08:21:02 pm »
I had a Clié TH55, and it's mp3 software was friendlier, but I think the Zaurus makes up for it with its large capacity HD.  The Zaurus software is not bad, but i just think the clié was more user friendly.

You have to keep the Zaurus open to change volume(you can use the scroll button to switch songs though), there is no "hold" function to prevent accidental button pressing, you cannot change the sound settings (equalizer), limit the sound volume to prevent hearing loss.  These are not "vital" functions, but they're nice to have.

Sound quality-wise Cliés were known for their superb sound, I think the SL-C3K is pretty good.

I do not know the specs for the sound, but i can tell you it's mostly about the headphones.  I tried the Zaurus with earbuds and i thought it sucked big time, I tried big studio type headphones, and i thought the sound was pretty good.  You need the bass function from the clie with the earbud kind so that you have some deep sounds.  when you have the big headphones, then you really don't need the bass because it distorts music too much.  Then again it's also a matter of what you like to listen to and how you like your sound settings.  I listen to classic music, acid jazz and trance music (i wonder how many people out there will listen to such a wide range of musical choice).

The notes are clear, but if you like the way it sounds really depends on your taste and the headphones you use.

Security and Networking / Problem With Planex Cf Wifi
« on: April 22, 2005, 10:01:26 am »
As I was searching the web to see if anyone else has had hardware problems with their CF Wifi Cards, I ran into this:

This is a post from Geek.com, some user reported problems with a D-Link card on a mini review for a D-Link Card. D-Link mini-review D-Link Air DCF-660W CF Wifi Card

Quote
Pure junk (9:41am EST Thu Feb 26 2004)
I've had two of these cards, and there is the problem. The first one lasted all of two months before the connections withen the antenna began to fail, requiring the I apply pressure to the antenna to get a wifi signal. It completely died shortly after that.

I bought a second card when I found one for $30 in the bargan bin at Office Depot. That card lasted two weeks before it failed with the same symptoms.

Other than the fact that it is poorly constructed, the card was great, and had a much better range than the Ambicom card that I am currently using. However, the Ambicom card is much sturdier. - by Jaiotu

did you try taking the cards apart?
To see what the antenna problem was?
I just bought one that seems to be working on an intermitent basis.
I notice that it seems to rattle a bit when I shake it.
I've have been thinking of taking mine apart to see what is rattling.
Possible rebuilding the antenna, or adding a connector, so I can connect it to a better antenna stuck to the back of my laptop/pda.

I cleaned my Zaurus's Hard drive just to make sure I didn´t F*k something while i was playing around with it, and the problem is still there.

My conclusion? the card is dead... $60 thrown out to the garbage.  No one I know is going to Tokyo, and CF cards are not seen in Peru... In a country where a HP 1710 is worth over $350 (the Palm T5 around $600), I really doubt I can find CF Card.

I'm having problems installing the japanese version (the one in the CD) I get some pop-up window with an error about the resource no longer available (the kind of message you get if you try to open a file and the disk has been removed...)

I think maybe my CD is messed up, is there a way to go around it? does anyone have an image of their Zaurus SL-C3k CD or better yet just an image of the PCSoft folder for the SL-C3k?

Thank you.

EDIT: It turns out it was a Win ME problem, I tried installing on a XP pc and the folders were recognized without problems.
