Off Topic forum / Wallpapers I made :)
« on: October 13, 2004, 01:38:31 am »
I was bored tonight, and my girlfriend and I took a ton of pictures at the zoo the other week so I decided to turn them into wallpapers:

http://www.dangerz.net/dz/wp/

Enjoy and feel free to use them.  As far as I know, the only thing that might be illegal is the Philadelphia Zoo logo.  I figured since we took the pictures there though, it's only fair that I put their logo on.

I also threw up some pictures I made of her

ELSI General Discussion / Teaser Images Part II
« on: October 12, 2004, 04:09:51 pm »
Ok, so I just finished up some work and decided to give you guys another update.

Here are 7 images that show the front page, part of the admin section, the project page and part of the process of adding a release.  As promised, I will also explain how you add a release to a project.

To make it easy, we'll start with the first image, which is the front page:

http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/pII/front.jpg

It's just a shot of the front page with the current releases.  I currently have it set to display 'at least' 20 releases.  It will display every single update from that day, but if it hasn't hit at least 20 it will keep displaying until it reaches 20 or it runs out of records.  I decided against showing screenshots on the front page for obvious reasons.

As well, I'm logged in under the admin account there, so you can see a little 'Admin CP' link next to my name.  Here is a screenshot from the admin section:

http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/pII/admin.jpg

Everything under the 'Manage Sections' part is complete.  As promised, everything is dynamic.  Everything can easily be added, edited, and eventually deleted.  'Flagged Project' is for when projects want to be deleted.  If the user has not submitted any files, they are free to delete their project.  As soon as a file has been released though, they must flag it to be deleted.  That way the mods and admins can decide whether or not they want to just get rid of a project.

Everything else is pretty self-explanatory.  'Site Shut-down' will let us disable the site incase the need arises.  'Site Locks' will let us lock certain sections, and 'System Alert' will span a red messagebox at the top of the site incase something is happening and we absolutely need the users to know.

The next thing on the list is the project page:

http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/pII/projectPage.jpg

You can see that everything that needs to be displayed is displayed.  As well, here is a shot when the project owner views their project page:

http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/pII/projectOwnerPage.jpg

Now you can see the differences between the two.  One thing I've yet to add is disabling/editing branches, as well as disabling/editing releases.  Neither of these causes the file to be erased.  That is always left up to the admin.

Finally, I'll show and explain how to add a release.  After clicking on 'Add Release', first thing you have to do is select a branch:

http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/pII/addRelease1.jpg

If there were more branches there, they'd be listed.  After clicking on the branch name, you are sent to the following page:

http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/pII/addRelease0.jpg

At this step, you must upload your file.  After thinking about how I wanted users to submit files, I decided that I don't like browser uploads.  Most browsers don't show any kind of progress bar when uploading a file, so you have no idea if the connection has timed out or how far into the process you are.  That's why org and I decided it'd probably be best if we set up an anonymous ftp.  You log into the ftp and click on the 'uploads' directory.  You cannot view any files in the directory; only upload.  If anyone is getting a sense of deja vu, it's because Sourceforge uses this   I think it works great, so I decided to implement this.  You have to follow a very simple naming convention and adding more filetype support is as easy as updating a variable.  Once you have uploaded your file and you have named it correctly, you are shown this screen:

http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/pII/addRelease2.jpg

If your project has more than one Rom or Processor in its support list, they'd be displayed here and you'd have the option of selecting those.  You are limited to only 1 selection here.  After you hit 'next', you are at this screen:

http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/pII/addRelease3.jpg

This is where you can tell people what libraries are in your project.  If you guys remember, we had spoken about making it so when you download a file, you select which rom you have and it cross-references the list of libraries included in that rom to the list of libraries required by the project.  If any libraries are missing from your rom, you are told so you can download those as well.  Also, you can see the other fields required for the release as well as the option of not displaying on frontpage/informing subscribers.

That's about all the images I have for you so far.  Sorry they are so large.  There is much more done, but I felt those are the most important to show right now.  Ignore any names of libraries or processors or roms or whatnot.  All that was made up and can easily be changed in the admin section.

Anyways, I'm gonna get back to work

Please let me know any comments/complains..

General Discussion / Artists Wanted
« on: October 02, 2004, 10:16:16 am »
Hey Guys

For those that aren't aware, I'm creating a brand new Zaurus Software Index for the community.  If you haven't already, the link to the board where it's been talked and discussed is here: https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...p?showforum=114

Anyways, the reason I am posting is that I am requesting you graphic designers and artists out there to come up with a layout

Here is the current one I'm using: http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/

It's one that I just put together quick and it works for now.  Anyways, I know there are some talended people out there, so I'm requesting that some of you try and come up with some concept layouts for the ZSI2.

Here are the requirements:

- Must be able to fit in 640x480 for those of us using clamshell and also be able to stretch as far out as needed.
- Must come up with a variant that is made for 320x240/240x320, for the non-clamshell Zaurus owners.  Try to keep it the same style/colors.
- Must have enough space for a banner on the top so org has the option to try and recoup some costs from this.  I believe the min size is 468x60, but I'm not positive.
- In the layout that I created, if you look at 'my.jpg' you will see little 'Z2' icons on the side of 'Personal Information' and 'My Projects'.  I need you to create a button like that will a rollover state.

You will get full credit for the layout design, but by submitting a layout, you must agree to let us fully use and modify your layout to how we need.

You dont have to create any of the HTML or anything.  Just fire up Photoshop or whatever you guys use and create me a neat looking site.  I'll take care of turning it into a webpage.

I'd like to have the page up and ready for testing within the next 2 weeks, so the more you submit the better.  When it comes close to going live for beta, I will hold a vote to see which layout the community likes most.  As well, you have full permission to use the layout in any kind of portfolio that you may have of graphic work.

Any questions, feel free to message me on here or just ask in this post.

Thanks Guys  ~

Roy

http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/

Sorry, my resolution is 1280x1024, so the images are the same.  The only shots I have for you so far ar the 'Submit Project' page, and the 'My' page.

What's done and not included are obviously the login and registration.  The hardest part of the zsi2 is done.  The rest should hopefully be smooth sailing.

I dont know if I've explained yet, but here's how it's set up:

You submit a project to the ZSI2, but it is not yet on the front page.
After submitting the project, a branch is automatically added called 'default'.  You then have to go to your project page and upload the file into that branch.  You also have the option of adding a different branch, such as 'unstable'.  Obviously, branches can be renamed/deleted.
At the screen where you upload your file, there is a checkbox and aside it are the words "Publish to front page".

This way a project is not released to the front page until it has files associated with it.  Also, if you make a small minor change and you don't feel it's worth front page, you can simply uncheck it.

I tried to model a bunch of stuff to how freshmeat.net does it.  I've been using them for a while and I think they have a nice efficient system.

If you guys don't like the layout, it can easily be changed.  I tried to make something that's light on the graphics and fits at least in 640x480, for those of us that want to browse using our Zaurus.  As well, I do plan on making a version of the page with a layout fit for 320x240.

Anyways, please let me know what you think.  Sorry I didn't make the deadline for having something for you tonight, but soon enough I shall have something.

ELSI General Discussion / Main Development Beginning
« on: September 23, 2004, 03:32:35 am »
Ok, so I thought I'd keep you guys informed of the progress.  I've begun the main bulk of the site.  What's done so far is a preliminary layout and the login/registration system.  I've decided to keep the accounts db different than that of the one we use here at the ZUG.  What I did though is add a field in the 'options' page for the accounts where you can enter your ZUG username.  What I plan to do with that is if someone wants to message you from there, they can enter a message and you have the option of it being automatically inserted here in the ZUG messageboard messages or having it be emailed to you.  As well, for the project subscriptions, if there's an update, it can do the same.

I'm going to start production on the main core of the ZSI2 now, which is the actual projects themselves.  I'll explain the database structure and the features so if any of you can think of anything else, those will be added.

A project has the following fields: id, name, unixname, screenshot, currentVersion, resolution, rom, model, processor, description, dateAdded, views, license, homepage, owner, and updated.

name: Name of the project.
unixname: Name of the projects filename.  This will have no spaces, commas, ~'s; things like that.
currentVersion: I plan to have the ability to put multiple versions on the site and to have multiple branches.  Those of you familiar with Sourceforge understand how this works.  You can have a development branch and a stable branch, and have multiple versions of the program in there.  The currentVersion field is set to whatever you consider the latest version to be.
Resolution: Admin will be able to add/edit/remove different resolutions.  If Sharp decides to make another Zaurus and it has a resolution of 800x600 or something, we'll be able to add it easily.
Rom,Processor,License: Same as resolution where admin has complete control.
Model: I put this in so that if we do decide to take this to more than just the Zaurus, we can simply add the other models using the Admin page.  Initially though, this will be something like Zaurus c860, Zaurus 5500, et al.
owner: This will be linked to your account.
updated: The last time the project has been updated.

If this sounds at all complicated, give me a few days and you'll see how simple it really is.  Some of the stuff can be dropdown boxes (For example licenses), and some can be checkboxes (Resolution for projects that can function on multiple resolutions for example).

That is what is going to be programmed next.  After that, the main chunk of the programming is done and I can add the 'features'.

Ok well, time to go to work.  Let me know if anyone thinks of any new ideas

ELSI General Discussion / ZSI Name
« on: September 20, 2004, 06:18:40 pm »
Ok, so as I'm making the new ZSI, I was wondering if everyone is ok with the ZSI name or if we should maybe make a new one?

zsi.org is taken.  I'm assuming we can still get zaurussoftwareindex.org, but that's rather long.  Any other ideas for a name/domain?

General Discussion / Ad-hoc
« on: August 04, 2004, 07:10:30 pm »
Anyone know if there are any commands that list the current users connected ad-hoc?

I have my laptop set up ad-hoc, and my zaurus connects to my laptop.  They both ping eachother fine, but I was wondering if there was any way I could actually see a list of connections.

For Sale / Wanted / For Sale: SL-C750 + toys
« on: August 04, 2004, 03:13:24 am »
I have a C750 for sale.  With it comes a PDAir black leather case, a 16mb SD card and a 64mb SD card.  It also has a screen protector on it and includes all original manuals and box and such.

I also have a 5600.  I have the box and manuals and cdrom and whatnot, but I don't have the inner parts of the box (the cardboard on the inside and whatnot).  Besides that, all is included.

If interested, email me at dzas@dangerz.net or reply back in the post.

Site Suggestions, Requests, and Updates / Paid for Programming
« on: July 29, 2004, 05:54:54 pm »
I'd be willing to design a site where Zaurus users can ask for a program, and in turn can put a 'bid' on how much money they'd be willing to put into this program.  That way we can get what we want programmed, and the programmers can be compensated for their efforts.

I have no problem coding, but my site design (look and feel) could use some work.  Regardless, would anyone be willing to help me design the look and do some lazy work (polling the community on certain topics)?  If org would want, it could be a part of the ZUG, or we can make it completely separate so we don't put too much of a load on the server.

Regardless of whether or not anyone helps, I'm still going to go ahead and do it.  I've heard many people asking for it, so I figure it's wanted.

General Discussion / Project Idea
« on: July 29, 2004, 04:52:07 pm »
So, in two weeks or so I'll be driving my girlfriend down to her internship.  She gets to live inside Disney World for 4 months.  Being as how we both live in Philly, it's going to be quite the drive.  Randomly the other day, I was thinking about buying a GPS unit for my Zaurus and Laptop.  I've always wanted one, and now I have the money to afford it.  Then today it hit me.  I think I'd like to map out all the wireless access points along the east cost on our drive.

There really is no point to it.  It's moreso just a geek factor thing I guess.  The only question I have though, is do you think the GPS unit could handle it?  As well, would the Zaurus be able to handle it, and would the WiFi card be able to handle it?

I know my laptop will be fine.  I've had that thing running constantly for much much longer than 19 hours.  The Zaurus though is different.

Besides all the "that's pointless" comments, anyone else have any comments/neat ideas for the trip?  As well, anyone know whether or not the hardware can handle it?

And to top it off, any recommendations on GPS units that you know work well with Wellenreiter?

Just for reference, it's a c860 with an AmbiCom wifi card.

Cxx0 General discussions / Ugh.. c860 won't turn on
« on: July 28, 2004, 03:17:57 pm »
I don't even know what happened.  I turned it on, and randomly the touchscreen wouldn't work (I'm running pdaXrom btw).  I didn't know what happened, seeing as how just 20 minutes ago the touch screen worked fine.  I restarted, and touch screen still didn't work.  Restarted again, same old thing.  I googled, and found people with the same exact problem.  I didn't have time to fix it last night, so I just shut it down by running 'shutdown -h now' and went to bed.  I woke up this morning figuring i'd reinstall the rom on it, and now it won't even turn on.

Anyone know how to fix this?  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Site Suggestions, Requests, and Updates / Downloads broken?
« on: July 28, 2004, 02:56:49 pm »
Hey, I was trying to download the Cacko rom from the site here, and I keep getting 404's.  Is there any other location to download it from?

Also, should I download hotfix B, or do I download the Cacko rom first and then download the hotfixes?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Key Bindings
« on: July 19, 2004, 03:53:10 am »
Anyone remember the X program that when you press a key, it gives you the keycode for it?

I want to change some key bindings in pdaXrom, and I can't remember what the name of the program is so I can get the keycode.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Upgrading pdaXrom
« on: July 12, 2004, 02:23:19 am »
Just out of curiosity, if I upgrade to the new pdaXrom when it comes out, will I lose all the programs I currently have installed, or can I save that?  I'd imagine the ones I have installed on my SD card are fine, but what about the ones on internal memory?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Screen Rotation Doesn't Work
« on: July 10, 2004, 11:34:21 am »
So I'm playing with my C860, and I just installed pdaXrom.  I rotated the screen and put it down and whatnot, and the screen rotation doesn't kick in.

Is there any way to do it manually?
