OK, so I had Cacko 1.21B running and decided to go back to the Sharp ROM that came on my C-860. I made a NAND backup of the Cacko and grabbed my NAND backup of the original Sharp ROM (138,543,120 bytes). Both the backup of Cacko and the restore of the Sharp went fine (at least according to the green lines). After the Sharp NAND was done, I selected reboot from the menu and it went blank, never rebooted. When I power it up now, both the yellow light and the green light blink on and off, but it never reboots.
I can't get back into the Service menus anymore to try and "re-restore" either of the NAND backups. It's not dead though, I can get to the Flashmenu. However, if I tell it to reflash either the Sharp ROM or the Cacko, it just goes blank and nothing happens. If I try and boot to a different Runlevel, same thing, lights flash on and off, nothing reboots. I've tried various combinations of turning things on, letting it sit for a minute or two with no battery. No soap, still does nuttin'.
I'd be happy to get either of the two roms running again if you experts out there would care to offer some suggestions.

Sharp ROMs / What would you like to see in Cacko 1.22 ROM?

Maslovsky: OK, so I'm a little slow to adopt, but just flashed the 1.21 and Fix B onto my sacred C-860 last night and it's absolutely awesome. Thanks so much for all your hard work. Really the only thing I'd like to see on the next ROM is that my TKCVideo works properly. I've got a ton of movies on 4GB Hitachi CF disks that I carry all over the place with me to watch in airplanes, trains, blah blah blah. This thing worked perfectly with the original Sharp ROM, but is very flaky with the 1.21 Cacko. Movies won't play in KINO either. These are MPG's and are full versions of DVD's ripped, then converted to AVI's with DVD2AVI, then to MPG's with TMPGenc.
Other than that, which may not mean much to many folks, this thing is a genuine work of art. I'll be donating to the "Maslovsky Fund" as well.

I've got 4 of the 4Gb drives (all from disemboweled Muvos) that I use all the time. I store 8-10 full-length movies on each (sometimes more) and I've experienced no problems at all. There is a great link on the forums that describes (in newbee detail !) how to make them work properly, and I haven't had a single problem since I found this post. I can't recommend them highly enough.

My advice would be to keep the 750. But that\'s just me. I got a 6000 from Amazon and a 860 from \"K\" and two days later the 6000 went back to Amazon. No comparison.

General Discussion / Which ROM and storage?

I stayed with the Sharp ROM on my 860 and purchased TKCVIdeo to watch movies. I have a d-link network card, aircable bluetooth, a 256mb and 512mb sd cards and a bunch of different microdrives that are loaded with either movies or audiobooks, MP3\'s, etc. I\'ve never had any trouble connecting to anything. I read about all the hackin\' around that goes on out here and scratch my head cuz I\'ve never had to do any of it. One very minor thing with the aircable bluetooth, but just a couple minutes with VI and that was easy.

Hmmmm, just invest a few bucks in TKCVideo and watch away without all that hackin\' around. I\'ve got 4 of the Hitachi 4Gb drives that hold 8-10 full length movies each that I take all over the place with me, and have never had a problem. I\'ve got an 860, but your results should be about the same.

I\'ve got a C-860, using the stock Sharp ROM. I\'ve got TKCVideo and last night I watched 4 ripped DVD\'s (FOTR extended edition disks 1&2, and Two Towers extended edition disks 1&2) back to back, on the battery and still had about 1/4 charge left. I was playing the movies off my Hitachi 4Gb microdrive. I\'m using the charger from the SL-5600 as I\'ve found that works better for me than the charger that came with the 860.

Hmmmm, never turn your back on just plain \'ol movies. I travel a lot too, and spend lots of time on airplanes and sitting around bored in airport terminals. But with my (count \'em 4 - 4Gb Hitachi drives), I can carry somewhere around 35 full-length movies with me with great video quality and great sound quality. Plus...... I have a 2 Gb drive that has the entire Lord of the Rings (and The Hobbit) in audio-book format to listen to. And of course, TKCsky that operates my telescope and gives me tons of information about the universe-at-large. Not to mentioin e-books..............

Don\'t know about the dive computer, but I did have a similar problem when trying to control my telescope through the serial port. Here\'s what worked for me:
Zaurus normally boots up in runlevel 5, which automatically starts a process called pppd that uses the serial port for PPP networking. This must be shut off before PSC can use the serial port for telescope control. The easiest way to do this is to perform a soft reset. A soft reset is nothing more than the procedure used for changing the Zaurus battery but this time we add one extra step. Note that a soft reset should not lose your addresses or other stored information but we take no responsibility if this happens anyway. Also, please read through all the following steps before performing them because one of them only gives you a few seconds to act.
quit all applications
just as you would if you were about to replace the battery, slide the switch on the rear of the Zaurus to the position labeled Replace Battery, wait a few seconds for the screen to go black, then return the switch to the position labeled Normal Operation.
slide open the Zaurus keyboard, locate the /? key.
turn the Zaurus on
Zaurus will now do a soft boot. Messages in white text on a black background will scroll by. After a few seconds the last message will be a line that says Wait ... and counts down from 5. Before it reaches 0 press the /? key. The countdown will stop and you will see a little menu. Now you can relax, the menu will just wait for you to type a key. Look through the entries and choose the one that makes /dev/tty0 free. On my Z this is done by pressing the e key, I hear from others it can be the t key, so your mileage will vary. Whatever it is, press that key now.
Zaurus will continue to boot as usual.
Note 1: This procedure need only be done whenever the device is soft reset. Just powering down or suspending the Zaurus during normal operation will not affect the availability of the serial port.
Note 2: to restore the PPP client, perform a soft reset again but just let the Wait message count down to 0 and let it proceed on its own.

coder101: I feel your pain. However, I followed the instruction listed here http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?n...iewtopic&t=3779 and they worked perfectly. Now I\'m the proud papa of 4 of these drives with a ton of movies and such like on each that I can take along with me to kill the boredom of long flights and airport delays. Follow these TO THE LETTER and you\'ll be fine. And just for the record, Omicron\'s a freakin\' genius for putting this down in terms anybody (even us newbees) can understand.

Lareya: First, I\'m using TKCVideo as a player. I rip the DVD\'s using DVDDecrypter, then convert them to AVI\'s using DVD2AVI, then convert them to MPG\'s using TMPGenc. Seems like a tedious process, but trust me, it works. The only issue I\'ve found is that if you \"fast forward\", you tend to lose \"lip synch\" which is most annoying. Actually, I can play both of those movies and still have nearly 1/3 batter left, which is more than sufficient to play Office Space. Playing my newest rip of Return of the King (which is LONNGGG) leaves me with well over half a batter charge left. If you want some specifics (I\'ve had a lot of questions about this thread), give me a shout at elrond_halfelven@comcast.net. And yes, I do like LOTR ! :-)

I bought my 860 from \"K\" (Keisuke Okuno), was treated with great courtesy, my C-860 arrived within 5 days, and was absolutely perfect. I have corresponded with him since, and never have had a moment\'s trouble. When I get my next stuff for the 860, I\'ll be buying it from him. Just my two cents worth.

I\'m running XP-PRO and Office 2003, and have had no problems. Using the 5600 apps and drivers from the 860. Only thing I don\'t synch is mail, but all others come across perfectly. Using TCP/IP and initiating the synch from the 8600. Hope this helps !
