Yes, noticed this in Opera 6.0.  In popup dialogues, the title bar flickers rapidly and you have to press any button twice for it to take effect.

Does anyone know if this has to do with the new sharp-compat-libs or with OZ 3.5.3 itself?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Shared-mime-info Package
« on: April 25, 2005, 08:14:47 am »
After I uninstalled "mime-support", every document in the DocTab is labeled as "octet-stream" unless they have their own .desktop files (usually created by a program like Text Editor, when you save a file.)

So does DocTab look for the /etc/mime.types file, or does it use /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml now?

I noticed shared-mime-info required glib2 so maybe only gnome apps use it.

I think I'll go back to the old way, since I'm guessing that's what DocTab uses, but I still wonder why they got rid of the old mime-support at the same time they added this one.

On further inspection the /usr/share/mime directory is huge, and full of lots of xml descriptions of types, but the question is do these actually get used?  DocTab still seems to label everything octet-stream unless there is a .desktop file saying otherwise.

Anyone know how this works?  Are we supposed to be using shared-mime-info OR mime-support instead?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Shared-mime-info Package
« on: April 25, 2005, 07:23:12 am »
Hello.  I just upgraded to 3.5.3.  In 3.5.2, there was a package called "mime-support" which used a file called mime.types which you could edit to create default applications for certain file extensions.

I noticed this wasn't in 3.5.3, so I thought maybe there is something newer and better.  I found "shared-mime-info."  I installed that and it created an xml file.

I read up about it on the FreeDesktop.org site and I think understand the point of it, but the question is how to get applications (especially DocTab) to want to use it?  Which apps can use it?

Or do I just scrap it and go back to the 3.5.2 "mime-support?"

Thanks

Just wanted to say Great job Mickey and everyone else.  I feel like you really did a superb job of addressing all the bugs and problems I posted about 3.5.2, and this version is a big step.

Kudos!

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Browser For 3.5.2 Opie
« on: December 20, 2004, 11:02:08 am »
I would like to recommend Opera 6.0 as the browser to use with OZ 3.5.2.  From what I've heard, higher versions of Opera are too unstable.  Mozilla related browsers are too slow.  I can tell you from experience that Konqueror-embedded (which you find in the opie feed) will cause you problems by putting cache on your romdisk, and it will crash while parsing java script.

So, use a creator to rip opera from the sharp distro, then install the pkg.  Make a link from /usr/share/opera to /opt/QtPalmtop/opera (this fixes a bug).  Use "Libraries" settings prog (that came with oz-compat) to make opera use the alternate libs.

OZ is great, and we should all help it along, but sometimes we want STABILITY in our lives, so stick on opera as well so you can breathe again after konq gets you angry.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Why Some Advancedfm Commands Fail
« on: December 19, 2004, 12:42:00 pm »
I think I know why the rename command fails in AdvancedFM.  It is because it is trying to use the "stat" command.  There is no "stat" command in oz 3.5.2, as far as I know, maybe we should put one in for the apps that depend on it.  What do you think?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Backed Up Initrd.bin. Is This Going To Work?
« on: December 19, 2004, 09:04:25 am »
Hello,

This is the first time i've tried making a custom initrd.bin for flashing so I want to be ultra paranoid and ask a dumb question.

The only flashing I've done so far is to get OZ in the first place, so please bear with me.

I read that all the initrd.bin is (one of the 2 files you put on the cf card for flashing)  is an image of /dev/mtdblock4.

So I installed OZ, took out some apps, put some other ones on there, and then ran

Code: [Select]
dd if=/dev/mtdblock4 of=/mnt/cf/initrd.bin
Good, so the file should be ready for flashing.

Now, what scares me slightly is the "Building a ROM" page i found on here.. (which is either in the how-to section or the FAQ section, i can't recall which.)  It states:

Quote
The resulting initrd.bin must be less then 14811136 bytes (14MB+128KB).

Now, my initrd is EXACTLY 14811136 bytes, which I kind of expect from the dd command.

Being ultra paranoid, I just want to verify that EXACTLY 14811136 is ok, not "less than" like the article states.

Thanks, everyone!

OpenZaurus/Opie/Qtopia / Opie-advancedfm Rename Is Flaky
« on: December 15, 2004, 10:16:47 am »
Just wanted to point out a bug to whomever might be developing this.  (I cant get into opie.handhelds.org anymore.)

opie-advancedfm 1.1.7-r0 on openzaurus 3.5.2.

If I try to rename a file from the menu command, it usually will close the window where I enter the name before I can finish typing it, and jump to some other spot in the gui.

thanks,  If there's a better place to post this let me know.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Should I Make A Swap File?
« on: December 15, 2004, 05:46:11 am »
Hello!

I have a 5500 with just one card (SD) that I'm going to pretty much leave in there all the time.

It is 512 MB Kingston which I just barely got, and stuck in and ran mkfs.ext2 on it.

I was reading on the forum and I found that some people with this size card like to put a 64 MB swap file on there, but they all seem to be running big stuff like compilers or debian+xwindows.

I am more concerned about something like Konqueror.  I had Konqueror running on the SD card and it segfaults when I navigate to certain places, like the forums on this site.

So either I am hoping that maybe a swap file could make it more stable (maybe wishful thinking), or at least be a useful step along the path to set up the Z to run some other browser. (I'm trying to plan out my approach now before I get too far into it.)

I am wondering if it would improve the performance of a web browser or if it would be neutral or actually hinder it to have a swap file mounted?  When SHOULD the Z have a swap file?

Any opinions?

Sharp ROMs / Switching to opie.
« on: February 19, 2004, 06:53:54 pm »
Is there a way in any of these Sharp or Sharp-based ROMS to get rid of Qtopia and put OPIE in its place?

Thanks.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / How does OZ 3.2 stack up to Sharp 3.13 on the 5500?
« on: February 19, 2004, 06:44:32 pm »
I guess the question now becomes:  \"How does Sharp 3.13 stack up to OZ 3.3.6pre1?  Where do I get this ROM, and where can I read about known issues (such as this thing with the compat libs?)

It looks to me like people are having trouble installing software for this release.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / How does OZ 3.2 stack up to Sharp 3.13 on the 5500?
« on: February 19, 2004, 01:58:31 pm »
OK, so it seems like the main disadvantage with the OZ 3.2 ROM vs. the Sharp 3.13 ROM is going to be the Linux Kernel used.  OZ 3.2 uses 2.4.6 and Sharp 3.13 uses 2.4.18.  This is from the FAQ:

Quote
The 2.4.6 kernel on the SL5500 2.x ROMs did not manage memory very well. Flashing to the latest 3.x Sharp ROM gives a huge improvment in memory management.

What other improvements does the 2.4.18 kernel have for the 5500?

OZ 3.3.5 uses the 2.4.18 kernel doesn\'t it?
