Software / Samba over WIFI
« on: February 19, 2004, 01:10:44 pm »
OK.  I am running Sharp ROM 3.13 for 5500s.

I have noticed that there is an app called \'qtSamba,\' but it only seems to want to use USB, and then only for \'syncing.\'  I am trying to avoid this whole syncing concept, I\'d rather have more control over my files.

I have also seen that I can install ncurses and sambamnt.  What I am wondering is:  Is there a graphical way to navigate Samba shares on my network, or is the best way to use the command line?

That brings me to another question:  what do I have to install to be able to run shell commands?

BTW,  I did run into a file navigator package on the ZSI, called \'file viewer,\' which looked like it could do what I wanted, but I couldn\'t reach the file which was on community.zaurus.com.  Do I have to change my hosts file to be able to access that?  At this point I can\'t even access the complete file system because all I have is that lame doctab thing, so I doubt I could reach that file anyway.

Software / Opera on OZ 3.2
« on: February 19, 2004, 12:46:23 pm »
I\'m using Sharp ROM 3.13 for 5500 right now, but I\'m going to switch to OZ 3.2 as soon as I can get an Opera package that is going to work on it.

I\'ve tried installing opera  6 creator from the ZSI, but no packages show up in the package installer when I run it.  (The hancom and jeode creators worked fine.)

So, Prophet mentioned this Link:

BTW. You can get opera 7 ipk here:
http://www.pdai.org/upload/mm_download_sl5600.ipk
- use manual install

Is this going to work on my 5500 running OZ 3.2?  What is a manual install?  (I\'m new to IPKs, I just got my 5500 yesterday.)

If that isn\'t the right way to go, how can I convert Opera 6 from the Sharp ROM into an IPK so I can have it under OZ?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / How does OZ 3.2 stack up to Sharp 3.13 on the 5500?
« on: February 19, 2004, 12:54:23 am »
Hi,

I really hate the Sharp 2.38 ROM which is what my refurbished 5500 that I got today came with.  It was a nightmare getting it to work enough to just upgrade to 3.13, which I did.   It didn\'t seem like it had many cool features.  It was very blah.

Anyhow, this new upgrade has made a world of difference, and before I go changing it to OZ right away, I wanted to make sure I won\'t be losing anything or backtracking.

This is what I like about the new ROM:  it shows my wireless status below, and I can disconnect or reconnect with just a couple of clicks.  Opera will automatically ask me if I want to connect.  This new one is a lot less buggy and it looks nicer.

So, am I going to lose any of that by flashing to OZ 3.2?  It SEEMS like what I want, based on what I\'ve read, but I thought I\'d ask for your opinions.  I am running creators on all my apps in preparation for the switch.

--Thanks!

I\'ve been reading a bit, and I see people seem to like those G2 screen protectors.  I guess I should get a couple of those so I don\'t scratch the screen up.

When order my Z from, I also ordered these accessories at the same time.  They were the only ones TigerDirect sold which looked useful.

Ambicom - WL 1100C-CFC1 WIFI $60

Lexar 32MB 4x CFC $15  (Just for transferring ROMs)

I mention the prices because I am not looking to spend a lot of money.  (That\'s why I got the SL-5500 in the first place, and not the SL-C7600.)

What are your most useful and price-worthy Z accessories?

What am I going to be wanting a couple weeks or a month down the road?

I have an SL-5500, so that is the most interesting to me, but I also like to keep up on those better Zaurus models, because I think they are just plain cool!

Accessories / Battery Extender Question
« on: February 14, 2004, 07:06:56 pm »
Hello, I just ordered an SL-5500 from TigerDirect $200

I am thinking of getting this product http://shop.store.yahoo.com/semsons-inc/pocpowban.html

It is the semsons pocket power bank recharger/extender.

I am getting it because I think I want to be able to recharge my Z\'s battery in between internet sessions while i am on the go, without having to park it by a wall socket.

This thing can charge back up the Z battery like 2-3 times while it is just sitting in my back pack right if i connect them up, right?

So I am imagining this:  I take a hour break and use the WIFI (and the battery.)  Then I do something else for a couple hours and it will be totally charged up for the next time I go to use it.  Can I use it like that, or does it just extend the Z\'s battery and not recharge it?

I like this model, because it comes with a recharger and some NiMh batteries for only $20.

I don\'t want it, however, if it always has to stay connected to the Z to be useful.  If that is the case I will get the smaller model that doesn\'t have a recharger for the AA batteries.

Has anyone used these things.. are they useful?  Can they be used that way?
