Actually offroadgeek you are correct we were wondering on this to and did some more searching looks like our more defined price will be 575 U.S everyone who has already preordered will be refunded the difference.

WOW, thats £299 UK price, now if only I could get a UK dealer who'd do it at that price! I'm sooo tempted.  Has anyone contacted ShirtPocket about this?

The large pics of the C1000 really show what a great looking machine it is, the colour suits it, I wonder if ShirtPocket will sell it and what the UK price will be.

Seriously Emperor, you have been spoilt by the VGA screen of a Sharp Zaurus before (am I right or did you have a 5xxx series ?) and then you say that VGA is overkill and QVGA is enough ? I cant believe this.

Hats off to you for being the first person who having seen and used a VGA device has wanted to go back to QVGA.

But again, to everyone their own needs and wants.  :-)

mmmh, not sure what to make of that.  The way I see it is everyone should be able to choose what they prefer for their own use. I'm sure you've made this point before about QVGA vs VGA.  In my own case, I didn't like the C860 after the initial honeymoon period, video was awful - playback on QVGA is easier, the screen, although technologically impressive was flawed with dead pixels, something I have never had on a QVGA (I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but I've never had it) device, the twisting screen became weaker and weaker and eventually I just didn't want to use it.  I could not see the display when outdoors, I had to hold it close indoors to read the text, pdaXrom (as I preferred X) was so small I could bearly read things on it.  I was hunched up and getting headaches, so I chose something more suitable.  Now I run X, can see the text at arms length, I can read it even in direct sunlight, I have X and Qtopia and internal memory that isn't slowly wearing away. As you say everyone has their own needs and wants, eh? ;-)

Seriously though, if this "OESF" is to ever be more than a Zaurus-only club, then other machines and the choices their owners make have to be respected. More of something doesn't make it better. I actually think the C1000 is a gorgeous looking machine, I ALMOST cancelled my Mac order to get one, but there are three things which will prevent that. Memory, display and the dissapointment after a few months.  :-)

But it IS gorgeous, I'd love a machine like that, makes a nice addition to the range of Linux handhelds out there.

Nice machine though, I wish someone would make one in the mini-laptop form without internal flash and with QVGA.

I'm tempted.. but VGA is too high for me, internal flash and twisty screens are weak points IMHO.

I've had a play with one at a local store, very nice.

The review reads:

"Even the meagre configurability of Qtopia is not made available.'

On the machine I played with, it seemed as configurable as Qtopia 1.7 on my handheld. I was happy with it.

Don't know how, seemed no different to my old Zaurii, the terminal was there, don't know if there is a difference between the one they had in the store and the one the reviewer had.

It seems some of the great fun of using (playing with) Zaurii is lost!?

I couldn't verify the rebooting thing.  But I had real problems with my C860 and the time on it, in fact, for keeping time it was useless. It felt like any other Qtopia machine, resolution was good, good form factor but with all the A/V goodies.

At the £549 price tag Dixons (UK) are charging, I could buy a lot of other things, so it looses out there. I'd consider it only when the price is much less than half of that. IF I had the money right now to burn, I'd get it though

Unit Conversion App
This would basically be a port of the program that I wrote for the Palm, called Converter which contains many unit types and was rather popular on the Palm.

Actually Si I am having to use XP as this PC is being sold and the buyer wants XP, I think you've discovered yet another undocumented feature.  This is the first time I've used Windows since trying Windows95. Pure crap, can't wait to get rid of it. Lots of things don't work as expected, how people use this all the time is beyond me.

Download Knoppix.  Seriously.
