Zaurus - pdaXrom / Basic Hotplug Questions
« on: January 10, 2006, 10:05:31 am »
I've noticed that when I plug my SL6000 into the USB cradle while the Zaurus is powered on, my usbd0 interface comes up properly (SL6000 as dhcpcd client talking to Windows XP which is using Internet Connection Sharing).

This works ok.

However, when I remove the zaurus from the cradle (while powered on) - then the usbd0 interface remains up (it never runs the /etc/hotplug/usbd.func script file in this case).  How can I fix this?

Also, I tried making the screen rotate when I insert the 6000 into the cradle, but it doesn't work (xrandr says: "Can't open display").  I added the xrandr call to the /etc/hotplug/usbd.func script.

I also tried starting the VNC server from that script, but that also fails.

How can I rotate the screen and start the VNC server (if X is up) when the 6000 is inserted into the cradle?

Thanks for any help!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Advancemame And Advancemess
« on: January 06, 2006, 11:20:52 am »
I did a build of xmame.SDL 0.77 a while back, and cut out quite a few games.
The resulting mame version runs mspacman at pretty much normal speed on my SL6000 (if I overclock it.)

A bit too slow for galaga, though.

Sound is sometinmes a bit choppy, but games are playable.

If there's interest, I could make it available somewhere.

I didn't see a point of going later than 0.7 or so, as the newer games will never run on the zaurus anyway.

To run it, I go into X and set overclocking, then exit X and run it directly from the cmdline.

6000 - Tosa / Rom Discussion On Tosa
« on: January 04, 2006, 01:38:17 pm »
I use pdaXrom, rc12 version.

AFAIK, the only thing that doesn't work is alarm while suspended, but I think the recent version that just came out may fix that.

I get to use Firefox and have a complete dev cramfs from the pdaXrom feeds.

I tried the others, but have no plans to go back now that I have pdaXrom.

General Discussion / Any Limit On Compact Flash (cf) Card Size?

Howdy all. It's been discussed & determined in other threads that the Z's can't handle more than a 1gb sd card, but what about cf? Can we use 2gb? 4gb? Is there any limit?

I have a 2GB CF card in my SL6000, and it works with no problems at all.

I had to resell a 2GB SD card, as it didn't work on my Z (or my Windows laptop)

I believe that 4GB CF works also, but haven't tried myself.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Format A Compact Flash Drive While Mounted

My system cannot see the card if it is not mounted

Is this because the card-reader shuts down when you umount the card?

Try formatting it on the Zaurus.

It should work if you do this with the card inserted:

# su
# umount /mnt/card
# mkfs.ext2 /dev/mmcda1

Then you can remove and reinsert the card and it should be formatted as ext2.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Cpu Speed Slows Down After A While?

some mames .. advmame? have a start up accel time...

I b!tched & moaned 'bout that for a while a while back.

I haven't noticed any slowdown on any other apps... and I think the
advmame wasn't a slowdown, as much as it was a feature.

Scott
ps:  I tried to switch the flag so that the turbo button was default ON
and you had to press turn to slow :->
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=106661\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Turbo button? what's that?

If I use the overclock app and set the top number to 3, then exit X, I get 27 fps for mspacman with using xmame.SDL.

The play is pretty smooth now, but still not fast enough for galaga.

With the overclocking at 3, I no longer get the slowdown - it stays fast.

Thanks, but...

How do I use it?
Is it available from the cmd line, outside of X ?

Any docs for the "Overcloc applet" in the system tools tab? It has three number entries, if I change these, will it stay how I set it permanently?

I'd really like to do this outside of X so I can speed up MAME.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Cpu Speed Slows Down After A While?
« on: December 08, 2005, 05:05:59 pm »
I've noticed some slowness when running several different versions of MAME on my SL6000.

I can get 20+ frames per second when I start, say, MSPacman.  But after playing around one or two minutes, it slows to a crawl - more like 10FPS.

I don't believe that it's a memory issue, and I'm running Xmame.SDL from outside of X (I exit X first).

Any idea what could cause this, or what I can do about it?

Is there some way to accelerate the CPU and keep it that way when I'm running some particular application? (I tried to use 'nice', but this didn't seem to matter.)

If I exit and restart MAME, it is fast again (before slowing down, as it always does).

I've compiled my own Xmame 0.77 with a subset of all games to shrink the executable (still 20MB, though).  This seems to slightly speed it up, but it still exhibits the slowdown behavior.

Help??

I've got a 4GB Adata SD card gathering dust since my faithful cacko doesn't seem to recognise it.
Anybody has been able to ues these cards on any distro.
I was checking the customisation page on

http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/

the author explains he's got a 4GB SD card but doesn't say anything special about it.

There's no such things as a 4GB SD card. The max SD currently available is 2GB and it does not work on the Z without hacking around. Max for SD is 1GB if you need something working out of the box. The 4GB variety is the CF card which work out of the box.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=106159\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

You are mistaken -  there are 4GB SD cards - three for auction right now on Ebay, in fact.

However, no Zaurus can handle an SD card over 1MB, AFAIK, this is a hardware limitation.  I couldn't even get my Windows laptop to read a 2GB SD card either, btw.

I you want to use more than 1MB on a card, CF is the only way.

C1000/3x00 Hardware / 2 Or 4gb Sd - Somebody Tried Them?

Hi,

my 512MB SD died a few days ago and i wonder what replacement would be optimal.

1GB are affordable but
2GBs are also getting cheaper nowdays.  Problem is - i have been told they don't work (reliable?) in the Z. 1GBs are fine.

Has somebody some experience?

Yes, I know that a Patriot Memory 2GB SD card won't work in my SL6000.  I haven't tried a 1GB, but I think they work.

My built in SD reader on my WinXP machine wouldn't read the 2GB card either (as soon as I wrote a 4-byte file on it, it showed as half full.)

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Looking For Native Compile Tutorial
« on: November 08, 2005, 04:49:18 pm »
Is there a tutorial somewhere on how to get a SL6000 with a fresh rc12 install up to the point where I can create a simple "hello world" application?

The pdaXrom.org site docs concentrate on cross-compiling, but I'd like to get everything happening on the Zaurus, if possible, and I assume that's what the native environment is for, but I can't find setup documentation.

I'd appreciate any pointers.

General Discussion / Support For 2gb Sd Cards?
« on: November 07, 2005, 04:15:17 pm »
Does anyone know if the Zaurus can handle SD cards > 1GB?

I just got mine today, which is formatted as 2GB FAT, but nothing happens when I plug it into my 6000.

Is there any hope to get it working?

Awesome ROM! Still trying to set it up and am having trouble with the built-in wireless.

I tried looking around in these forums, but everything seems to say I should use the "System Tools/LAN& WIFI" utility (network.py).  I tried setting up my WEP network in there (after 'usbctl on 1'), but when I hit "OK", it doesn't work.  Here's what I see in /var/log/messages:

/sbin/hotplug: no runnable /etc/hotplug/wlan.agent is installed
/sbin/hotplug/net.agent: how do I bring interfaces up on this distro?
/sbin/hotplug/net.agent: register event not handled
/sbin/hotplug/net.agent: Setup prism2_usb for USB product 0/0/0

Here's 'ifconfig -a'"
lo ...

wlan0  Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:00:00:00:00
          BROADCAST MULTICAST  MTU:1500 Metric:1
          (RX packets/TX packets all 0)

And when I enter "usbctl off 1" I see this in /var/log/messages:

/sbin/hotplug: no runnable /etc/hotplug/wlan.agent is installed
/sbin/hotplug/net.agent: NET unregister event not supported

What am I missing?
