Sharp ROMs / Mplayer For Sl-5500

Hello All,

I have an old SL-5500 I am attempting to make into an iPod (that is, and iPod that plays Oggs). I have been very pleased with Zplayer (with mplayer underneath) on my SL-6000. However the mplayer binary I run on my SL-6000 doesn't play (illegal instruction, or some sort).

I have downloaded several 'pre' version of mplayer 0.90 (ie. mplayer_0.90pre10_arm.ipk), but they only play when root, not as an unprivilaged user. I have tried running Zplayer as root (doesn't work), changing mplayer to SUID root, doesn't work.

Does anyone have a mplayer ipk which does work on an SL-5500 as non-root?

Thanks for the input sofar.

Is there a version of Graffitti or Jot that is ported to the Z that could get around the issue.  I've heard of recalibrating the handwriting system to accept Graffitti gestures, but anything else out there??

Ahh, another former Newton user. Yes, those days of writing anywhere on the screen were great!

Alas, I have tried several times to go to single handed note taking, and always reverted back to my IR keyboard, because it is so fast, and I can maintain eye contact while touch typing. Something I can't do when doing single handed note taking.

That said, there is the "handwriting" and "pickboard" entry methods built into the Z (standard ROM). They aren't bad. The handwriting does take a little getting used to, because it is actually a multi-stroke entry (rather than the old graphiti single stroke). So characters like K are actually three strokes rather than a funky 1 stroke backwards/sidways cursive e.

I find if I am in a group meeting, and I want to catch everyone's name (single handedly) I use an app called DrawPad, which is kind of like digital ink, without the automatic conversion to text (you have to go back and read your handwriting).

Would have been nice if Apple had spun Newton out. Perhaps it would be kicking butt in the PDA market these days.

Still the Zaurus is pretty nice little note taking machine (with an IR keyboard).

Hardware Mods / Sl-5500 Power Questions

I don't know about 5500s, but the C3100 I got used from Conics came with a PSP adapter, and it seems to work fine.

Just tried out my son's PSP charger on my SL-6000 and SL-5500. Works just fine.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Wispy

Hey guys, I saw over at the kismet site someone compiled the wispy tools to their c1000.  He wouldn't happen to be a member of this forum would he??  If so would you share the program??  I haven't quite got the compile thing working yet.

But don't hold your breath, it didn't work for me. Didn't like the usb device (with the stock Sharp ROM).

This app works great on my Ubuntu PowerPC laptop. Alas not my Zaurus...

Very odd. And a bit annoying. I am woindering if its an endian incompatibility between x86 and Arm - perhaps mkcramfs defaults to arm compat, and mksquashfs to x86?

X86 and the Arm on Zaurus are both little endian machines.

I have created cramfs and its uploading to my website, it's 72638464 bytes!

I copied  the image onto my SD card, and mounted it under /tmp (which on cacko is elsewhere).. thus:

$mkdir /dev/shm/tmp/oesfforlofi

$mount -o loop -t cramfs /mnt/card/oesfforlofi.cramfs /dev/shm/tmp/oesfforlofi

then simply tell opera to browse file: and go to /tmp and to oesfforlofi and then index.html

Thanks for this. I had plenty of room, so I just popped this file over to my 1GB SD card. Mounted in my wevserver (boa) root directory, and now I am serving the archive to my local network! Great stuff.

Security and Networking / Start A Network Connection From The Command Line

qcop QPE/Network connectRequest()

brings up the network applet connection select screen.

These commands look quite interesting. but they don't do a thing for me on my Zaurus ROM. No matter what I type (a valid command, that is) I get the error:
bash-2.05$ qcop QPE/Network 'connectRequest()'
SlSharedManager: can't get proc entry
Display size = 480x640

Is there something else that needs to be loaded before issuing qcop commands?

6000 - Tosa / Source For Ea-bl09 Battery

My SL6000 is starting to show signs that the battery is dying.  It doesn't last as long on a full charge as it once did. 

I did some quick searching this evening looking for replacment batteries but only found one at Streamline for $150!

I am sure there are cheaper ones out there, but I was unable to find them. I just bought one from streamlinecpus, and it has given my 6000L new life (especially wlan life). Kind of expensive, but still cheaper than a new Z.

I went the ebay and amazon.com route, but nothing came up for 3 weeks, so I bit the bullet and went with streamlinecpus. I will say, although pricey, they do have good service.

Software / Itunes Radiostation Client For Oz

I've looked around, but I haven't seen anything promising. Is there an iTunes radio station client that will run on my SL-5600? I could only find tckRadio (which is $15 and hasn't seen an update in 3 years) and Handango ZRadio ($10 and nearly as outdated). I'm really looking for something iTunes station compatible, but would settle for any robust app. Thanks.

Don't know if it is iTunes radio station compatibile (I suspect it is) but you may want to give Zplayer a try. It relies on mplayer (running in the background), but plays mp3s, oggs, and streaming audio (I am playing a shoutcast stream right now). You can find it at:

That's a very nice setup, Oak. As you can see mine is quite a bit simpler.

Note the distance between the keyboard and the Z. Any closer, and I get into the interference zone.

I do not use the included stand, but I use my home-made case with a home-made kick-stand. My camera's battery is dead atm, but I will try to get pictures up later or tomorrow. One thing I have noticed is that if the IR port lines up perfectly with the IR eye on the keyboard, it will act really strange. You have to have the keyboard at an angle to the IR port. In landscape (rotated right) the IR eye on my keyboard is a little to the right of the IR port on the Zaurus. Otherwise, typing will result in wrong letters , backspaces, and other uncontrollable weirdness.

It would be interesting to see your setup. My setup is quite a bit simpiler. I have a pen, pencil or post-it pad (what ever is handy) proping up the SL-6000 with the IR window facing toward me (rotated left). The keyboard is just sitting on the desk, with the Z behind (farther way) it.

I have found there there is a no-go distance I want to avoid with the Belkin keyboard. Yesterday I tried running the keyboard about 2" (5cm) away from the Z, and I was getting good clean key presses. If I run the keyboard only an inch (2.5 cm) away, that seems to be the no-go zone, resulting in what you are seeing, odd letters, backspaces, and other weirdness.

In my case, I think this is due to that fact that the Belkin has 2 LED transmitters, one shooting straight out, and the other angled up (to work with the included stand). I think when the keyboard is only 1" (2.5 cm) away, the two signals are interfering with eachother, which results in the weirdness.  You may be experiencing the same thing, but by moving the IR windows off axis, you are avoiding the interference.

To prove my theory, I set the keyboard in the no-go zone, and took a business card, and covered the right half of the keyboard IR window while typing. The keyboard worked just fine. Removing the business card, and it was back to weirdness. For you, it may be the left side (of the IR window) since your setup is a little different.

On a slightly different subject, I think there is a bug in the IRK for Qcop macros, and that is why I can't get the backlight to shut off. I have pulled down the source, and I'll have to look into a bit more.

I am having _real_ problems with the Belkin keyboard when it comes to typing. It is dropping quite a few characters, and sometime inserts chars when I know I am pressing the right key (like M for return, and H for backspace). Only when I set the keyboard _real_ close to the Z IR window (about 3 mm) does it seem semi reliable.

Oak, how do you have your Belkin and Z setup? Are you using the included stand?

I have my Z in landscape (on its size rotated counter clockwise) with the IR window pointing to me, and the Belkin sitting on the same flat surface, and I am having lots of problems.

I'm not sure if this driver is better than another, as this is the only one I have ever used. But notice that there are 2 F8U1500 drivers in the list within the irk program. One is a F8U1500T, and that is the one that works with my F8U1500E keyboard. (With the F8U1500 one, some letters, such as "a" do not work.) My cmd key works as it should, but I have not programmed any key combos besides those already there. Cmd + b opens email program by default.

Look on the "spine" of the keyboard to see if there is a letter after the F8U1500. And I found out the hard way, do NOT change drivers within the irk program without turning irk off first.

You are a genious! I was having problems with the 'a' key as well. In fact, I thought I was going to have to return it. Then I thought I would try the F8u1500T driver, and it worked! BTW, my "spine" shows that this is an E keyboard as well.

What I don't have working is turning on/off the backlight (something I used quite a bit) and turning of the Zaurus (cmd+backspace). I see from Craig's old page how one is supposed to turn off the backlight, but it doesn't seem to work when I map it to a cmd key. I'll keep trying.

Software / Ir Keyboards - Belkin Support?

I have a Belkin F8U1500E (notice the "E" as I'm not sure if it means anything), and it works with the default Sharp rom (1.12), using irk. Having the extra row of number keys is nice, but this keyboard is a bit larger than the Pockettop. About the same thickness, and a 1/2 inch larger both other dimensions.

I responded to you in the "other" IRK Belkin discussion. But since I have you here. How do you configure the command keys. I was able to configure CMD+B to turn on and off the backlight. Now when I configure a command key it doesn't do anything. Actually pressing the command key is like pressing the function key on the old Pocketop, it is the same as pressing the "home" key on the Zaurus. So I can't chord a cmd+b.

Is your 0.11.1f a better driver than kopis?
