Zaurus - pdaXrom / Ruby 1.8.3 Compiled..
« on: October 01, 2005, 04:03:16 pm »
I would be interested. Please do try to compile ruby :-)

And if you could make a package for gem or rails ... that would be even better!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Offlineimap Package
« on: June 28, 2005, 01:16:37 pm »
Hello

Is there a package for offlineimap? It is not in the feeds but maybe someone has managed to use it under pdaxrom. For those who don't know, offlineimap [1] is a tool for synchronizing local email folders ("Maildir") with an IMAP server. It is great for reading mail offline with mutt.
If offlineimap is not possible do you know of any other such tool that is available under pdaXrom?

Thanks.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom Over Familiar
« on: May 11, 2005, 03:52:11 pm »
IMHO the build systems of both have the same level of ease of use, but bitbake/OE feels more professional.

Pdaxrom advantages (for my needs):
- It really feels like a true laptop. Familiar (as in the word, not the distro) applications are there (firefox, thunderbird, graphic links browser, mplayer, xmms, kismet etc.) and work as expected, and it seems that you could run anything you run on your laptop.
- The distro is more solid with more preferences to be set (e.g., usb-storage mode, network profiles, backlight adjustment). GPE is not so mature.
- Better handling of different languages (e.g., greek chars appear in every app without me having to do anything - I am still trying on GPE)

OZ-GPE advantages:
- Much more open community. Well this has many benefits for users (and powerusers): faster upgrades (hrw has everything in the feed the moment it is asked) and bug fixes, anyone can contribute easily, shows more promise etc.
- Interface which successfully (more or less) combines PDA with laptop.

Regards,
Greg

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oz 3.5.3 (gpe) Internationalization
« on: May 03, 2005, 01:15:30 pm »
Some more info:

I have installed all related "locale" packages such as glibc-locale-el, glibc-localedate-el-gr+euro, gtk+-locale-el, localebase-el-gr-iso-8859-7, localedef, and also sylpheed-locale-el, mutt-locale-el. I tried also setting env variables LC_CTYPE and LANG to el_GR. Whatever I tried, I get the same result:
- in mutt greek charaters in message subjects appear as "?" and in message bodies as escapes ("\303\355...")
- in syplheed greek characters do not appear at all.

It is strange since "Bitstream vera" should contain greek glyphs (unless they have been removed because of size? - I doubt it).

I would appreciate greatly any help.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oz 3.5.3 (gpe) Internationalization

Hello everybody

I would like to be able to read / write texts in greek (and also french/german) while using rxvt.
Is there a document describing the necessary steps to accomplish this?
E.g., installing fonts, changing locale settings, installing an applet for changing the keyboard layout etc.
(the bitstream vera fonts included with OZ include greek glyphs but still greek characters show up in rxvt as question marks).
I am using OZ 3.5.3 / GPE.

I would be grateful for any pointers.

Accessories / Looking For A Stylus?

A lot of stylus including the Saitek are available on:

Stylus Central

They have also other models with led tips (it would be nice to know which one is brighter/fits the zaurus better).

They have also 2  modules that are used on the finger: the Stinger and the TrueTip. Has anyone here used these things? They look convenient...

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Ppp On Oz 3.5.3 / Gpe
« on: April 26, 2005, 01:10:57 pm »
Hello everybody

Is there a GUI program for configuring PPP/dial-up on OpenZaurus 3.5.3 / GPE? I have a Targus CF modem that I would like to use for dial-up. The modem is recognised (shows up on the PC/CF Cards settings dialog) but on the "Network setup" dialog there is no ppp0 or similar interface to set-up.

I searched the forum for help but I didn't find any previous posts about this. Do I have to set it manually somehow?

Thank you for your time.

Open Embedded / Installing Python + Offlineimap
« on: April 26, 2005, 01:02:56 pm »
Hello everybody

I tried earlier today to install offlineimap (a very nice program for synchronizing mail with an IMAP server). Offlineimap is written in python so, "ipkg" brought in python-core as a dependency. However offlineimap needed more python modules. Some of them were in the feed, some were not. I found the missing modules on my linux box, copied them over and now offlineimap works nicely. Regarding this, I have three remarks:

- offlineimap complained about not finding modules "traceback" and "linecache" (and maybe 1-2 more which I don't remember now). I have OE/bitbake (latest versions) installed and I see that there is a file "python-2.4.1-manifest.inc" that gets included by python_2.4.1.bb, and has these two modules listed. Why don't they appear in the final python-core package?

- offlineimap after installation had an error in the first line (trying to run something like ..../staging/.../python instead of /usr/bin/python)

- OE contains a .bb file for an older version of offlineimap. I updated the version, fixed the dependencies and produced a working .ipk. What is the proper way to contribute it to the OE/bitbake team? (And, in general what is the proper way to contribute small fixes?)

Thanks for your time.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Openzaurus 3.5.3
« on: April 14, 2005, 06:37:43 pm »
I just switched to OZ3.5.3/GPE on C750.
Congratulations to everybody involved, OZ is very very nice.

I would like to ask: what is the reason that the GPE image ships with the 2.4 kernel while the other two ship with the 2.6 kernel? Can we expect an updated image with the new kernel, or this will have to wait until OZ 3.5.4?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / modem
« on: February 27, 2005, 03:10:43 pm »
I have the same problem with Marcus. My setup is RC9 + Targus cf modem.

I cannot log in to any dial-up account: I have two that use PAP and one that uses CHAP and always the final message is "Failed to authenticate ourselves to peer" although username/password are correct. I had a look at the files under /etc/ppp and they look ok.
I tried to use the solution that Marcus proposes but when I try to connect "manually" so that I can see the prompts of the dial-up server I see only "garbage".

The same dial-up accounts worked with Sharp/Cacko ROM.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as having dial-up connectivity means I can leave the laptop at home when I travel and get only the zaurus.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / How Install Gcc.img?
« on: February 08, 2005, 04:14:07 pm »
I see that the feed contains more or less all the tools needed for development (gcc, make etc.).
But then there is also a different SDK for download at the pdaxrom site.

Could someone explain what is the difference between installing all the development-related ipks and using the SDK img?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / is ext2 or 3 the only choice for SD card?
« on: November 24, 2004, 07:50:34 am »
I was thinking about the ext2-in-a-file solution too, but I was curious about the performance penalty due to this indirection. Richardh, could you please perform some simple benchmarking for us? (Thank you for the detailed instructions by the way).
