General Discussion / I Have Archos 430 In My Hands! Any Questions?
« on: March 23, 2005, 01:58:23 pm »
Is it able to act as a video recorder and record directly from the television?  If so, how well does this work and what video format is the information stored in?

Well being the mac geek that I am, I would snap one of these up as soon as it came out.  Seeing that I have a Newton 160 and 2100 on my shelf and an eMate at work.  Now saying that I also know that Uncle Steve hates pda's in general and I really doubt Apple will ever make one while he still draws breath.  Could be wrong though, which would be really cool!

Steve like many others believe the traditional PDA is dead; however, he has never ruled out a video-centric handheld.  I believe he indicated, some time ago, that he did not believe the timing was right for such a device.  Well, the timing may be right and if you make such a device it should include all traditional pda functionality even though that is not its primary focus.

I would love to see Apple do a device like this.  I think they produce some of the most innovative hardware and software.  I imagine it would be based on the same Unix kernel Mac Os is running on.  Competition is good!

General Discussion / Replacement For A C860 Screen?
« on: March 04, 2005, 06:18:30 pm »
I believe the screen on the SL-C700 is the same as the 7XX & 860.  Might have better luck finding a non-functioning 700 with the screen intact at a reasonable enough price since it is the oldest clamshell model.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / C3000 O C860?
« on: February 28, 2005, 10:40:18 am »
If you don't mind switching your CF to have wifi, I would go with the cheaper 860 for now and hope that a later model Zaurus comes out with integrated wifi.  To me the most compelling thing about the 3000 is that I can leave in my wifi card and still have access to the 4GB HD.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / New Zaurus In March?
« on: February 25, 2005, 12:17:48 pm »
Count me in on that upgrade, this is what I've been waiting for.  I hope this means that Sharp will expand the Zaurus line to fill the void left by Sony leaving the marketplace.  Several new Zaurii in various configurations: wifi built-in; wifi & bt; bt only....  you get the picture.

Does anyone know what share of the handheld market Sony has in Japan?  I hope Sharp moves agressively to fill the void and increase their dominance in Japan.  The stronger they are the better chance we have of getting upgraded Z's more frequently.

General Discussion / Between A C750 And A Sl6000
« on: February 16, 2005, 10:38:37 am »
When faced with a decision such as yours, I try to take emotion out of the equation and look at which brings me the most benefit with the fewest drawbacks.

Based on what you have indicated, "I have been using both - but of late I am tending to like the 6000 more because of its utilitarian functionality - bigger screen, built-in wifi and USB (rarely).", the 750 looks like the candidate that should get the boot.

I understand your dilemna, the clamshell is the best designed handheld currently available, but the 6000 seems to be a better fit for what you want to do.  Plus, it means carrying around fewer accessories.  My 2 cents.

General Discussion / Bye Zaurus And Be Well.
« on: February 15, 2005, 11:20:52 pm »
Best wishes to you Xaser and I hope that the Zaurus will continue to evolve to the point that it draws you back again in the future.

You are right that we need to keep working to make the Z easy to use for novice users and a rock solid user experience (adding software, syncing, upgrading OS, adding peripherals, etc.).

General Discussion / Any New Zaurii Upcoming?
« on: February 15, 2005, 09:32:21 am »
Does anyone know whether wifi or BT use is increasing in Japan?  Since Sharp is only marketing to Japanese consumers, what they are adopting will be what Sharp includes in future Zaurus models.

I'm with Bluedevils, I bet the next model has more memory, faster processor or larger drive but nothing new added over the 3K.

And what are the chances of a 2.6 kernel?

Hopes, dreams and wishes.......

Software / Sharp's Photostorage

SL-C3100??  Dare we speculate what this possible new unit might have?  BT?  4 inch screen?  Tivo like functionality like the Archos PMA400?  We can only hope.

General Discussion / Backup Software/options
« on: February 10, 2005, 01:29:20 pm »
And tkcBackup takes the early lead...

I've not heard much from theKompany lately, are they still supporting their Zaurus products?

Bluedevils &/or Raybert have either of you received updates to tkcBackup or are there no open issues to be addressed?

General Discussion / Backup Software/options

I'm trying to determine what would give me the most flexibility for backups and restores.  Is tkcBackup the only full-blown application that lets you do selective backups/restores?  What are some of you using, other apps, scripts, manual processes?

General Discussion / First Zaurus, Sl5500 Or C3000?
« on: February 07, 2005, 10:00:26 am »
I'd suggest getting a used SL-C700 if you can find one at a good price.  It is a little limited on built-in memory, but memory cards are cheap.  You'd would be able to see if you like the clamshell design and you would get the 640x480 screen which is awesome.

5500, 5600, C-700 it's hard to go wrong with any of these, so I imagine the budget and availability will probably dictate the purchase.

Here's a link to the Archos Fan site, check out the WMV video of a guy demoing the device.  I'm more impressed now than I was before, the USB host accessories make this one tempting device.

Please take a look at this post at engadget:

http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000090030074/

Pro's:
-full keyboard
-VGA swivel screen (apart from the Z, I think this is the first example...)
-worlwide support probably
-Wifi, bluetooth AND gsm/gprs/umts
-looks pretty nice

Con's:
-No linux (Yet...?)
-No built in HD like the 3000

What are your thoughts?

I must say I applaud this effort. This hardware form factor is perfect for PDA/communicator form. Most importantly, you will be able to buy it in Europe and the US and receive support!
(Actually I was ready to order a sl-3000 some hours ago, but this made me doubt again...)

I must say, this is the device the openembedded/pdaXrom/... people should be targetting. I do believe this is a major blow to Sharp...

Edit: More negatives: no CF and not available for some months (available summer 2005 - first rumor was first half 2005, now July/August 2005)

best regards,
Jan

Not as robust as the SL-C3000 but definitely a big step up for most who are carrying both a phone and a Pocket PC/Palm device.  Obviously targeting that tweener market that want a converged device that is equally as capable as a phone and pda.  And the screen is large enough for decent video playback.  I think it will sell well, I love my Z though.
