Can anyone else confirm this works?  If it does I see Bluetooth in my future.

Thanks for the tip, 0x!

One more thing on peripherals -

The zaurus is much more useful with wireless networking.  Go ahead and plan on getting a wi-fi card and getting a wireless router at home if you don't have one.

Also, sooner or later I think we all end up with a high-capacity SD card.  It is more convenient than CF because you don't have to give up your wireless for it.

Keep an eye out on good deals (prices are very good right now) and scoop one up.  SanDisk users have reported some problems but others seem to work fine.  Nothing greater than 1 GB will work.  Don't worry about high-speed products because they won't really be any faster on the Zaurus.

Worth mentioning - Most Zaurus users will eventually end up buying a 1 GB SD card because the CF slot will be taken up by WI-FI or Bluetooth CF cards.

I wish I had set up python as my preferred native development environment earlier.  While there is a performance penalty on my SL-5500, I find python is the best fit for the device and works on both sharp-based and pdaxrom (I am not sure about OZ/OPIE).  I wasted a lot of time trying to get java, C++, and other things to work well.

The brightness level you set makes a big difference.  I set mine to what can best be described as "dim" when on battery power.  I also use a socket wi-fi card which gets more life than, for example, an ambicom card I have.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pyqt For Rc12

I would like to be able to write gui python apps for my SL-5500 and my C760 with pdaxrom.

It looks like PyQT is the best bet, but I have read that the available version is for 2.3.  RC12 and kopsis' image is 2.4.  I took a shot at compiling it myself but no luck.

Could someone recompile PyQT 2.4 for rc12?

Thanks

I've used the 2.3 version with RC11 (haven't upgraded to rc12 yet).  I just had to copy what was installed to python2.3/site-packages to python2.4/site-packages.  I haven't run into any issues with my pyqt apps.

My notes say that I downloaded the ipks from the 'cacko x11 feed'.  Can't find the url but if you need the packages let me know.

Thanks, Jason.  I was concerned because of this post:

I will give it a try myself.

Software / Shoutcast Player For Recording Broadcasts?

You can do a dumpstream with one instance of mplayer and start up another instance to read it at the same time.  I do it all the time on my linux box though I have not tried it on the zaurus.

For what you want to do with it, why not get a C760.  I love mine.  It does everything on your list.  And they can be had used on this site for a couple of hundred less than the C1000.

I use mplayer to play videos on my zaurus.  I would love to have a bigger screen and higher resolution.

Any experiences with mplayer or any video player on the Simpad?  What formats/resolution/fps does it support?

I am thinking mostly in terms of OPIE, but I would be open to whatever OS was most conducive.

I use Pdaxrom/xfce/rox on my 760.  I am very pleased.

As for the browser issue, I really liked opera on the sharp-based roms.

My solution (at home) is to run firefox remotely off one of my linux boxes.  It performs well and obviously has all the features of firefox.  I just ssh -X into my linux box and lauch firefox from there.

General Discussion / Watching Live Tv From Mythtv - Possible?
« on: October 22, 2005, 12:52:41 am »
Well, my specific scenario is that I pull mlb.tv streams off of the internet and re-encode them using mencoder to a zaurus-compatiible format (mpeg 4 at 15 fps).  Three hours of video come out at about 200 meg.

What I do in a similar situation is I have a zaurus-compatible video file created in a directory under a web server.  Then I stream it to my zaurus using mplayer and http.  It works pretty well and is simpler than vlc (IMHO).

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Xfce4 Finetuning

I found this post that suggests a way to make some of the automatic functionality work by calling chkhinge in a loop.  Not very elegant.

Is there a better way?  Is there a way to do the equivalent of rc.xml?

Looks like xkeymouse may be related?

I am going to try it and post my results.
