General Discussion / Zaurus "Computer Name"
« on: August 11, 2004, 09:08:02 am »
I have a laptop with wi-fi access to my wireless router. I gave it a computer name of "Doug" so I would know if any one else gains access to my wireless system.

My SL-5500 also has a wi-fi card installed, but the only thing I can get to show up on my router is "unknown" when I access it from my Zaurus.

I have tried everything I can think of to change the computer name of my zaurus, but all I get is "unknown".

I would really like to name my zaurus so I have a good handle on access to my router.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Doug

Like I said, you have to scroll the menu and then "TAP" your choice.
It works for me every time.

Hold the stylus down on the link for a second until a menu pops up, then scroll down to your selection and tap it.

Accessories / A hard lesson about Sandisk SD cards
« on: August 01, 2004, 08:25:45 am »
If you read the description, it says that it is a replacement for the SL-5500 driver. No other info is available there. But you never know, it might work on C860.

Also --very important-- I made a folder on a 256mb CF card called "SD Card Backup" where I periodically copy the contents of my SD card to. This is a good safety net.

Here'a a link to an updated SD card driver for the SL-5500 that might possibly help you with your SD problem. I increased the write speed on mine by about 250%.
There was a slight read speed improvement. My SD card is a SimpleTech 128mb.
I have installed a lot of programs to it instead of internal memory, plus I use it for my backups. Works out very well for me.

Software / MS-DOS Emulator for Zaurus
« on: July 30, 2004, 08:58:06 am »
Yes, I downloaded the ipk and installed it. I also downloaded the Freedos package, but I don't have a clue how to set it up, and there don't seem to be any instructions that tell you exactly how to set it up.

Software / Opera 7 Install
« on: July 30, 2004, 08:48:47 am »
Sounds like you need to do a reset, then install opera 7, and not do a restore of whatever else you have. You might have some gobblety-goop in your backup. Maybe a clean install will solve your problem.

Software / MS-DOS Emulator for Zaurus

Thanks for your offer of help, but it doesn't look like the dos emulator deal will work for me. It's all to complicated sounding to me. I just want to install a dos emulator program and be able use it without a lot of monkeying around. I'm an old DOS man, and I don't know a thing about linux. My zaurus would be complete to me if I could get this working. Oh, well, better luck with my next project (whatever that is).

For Sale / Wanted / CF WIFI 802.11b CARD can work with Zaurus
« on: July 28, 2004, 03:19:13 pm »
I have a sl-5500 running standard sharp rom 3.13.
I am using an SMC EZ Connect model SMC2642W wi-fi compact flash card.
In networking, I created a new wireless lan entry with the settings all set at automatic.
You don't need to install any drivers. Just plug it in, connect, and you're in.
Works great for me.
This is a type I card.

Here is a link to SMC website page that shows it...

Software / MS-DOS Emulator for Zaurus
« on: July 28, 2004, 11:30:51 am »
I have some old MS-DOS programs (not games or graphics, just standard 80x25 text based programs) that I use all the time on my laptop. I would like to know if there is a DOS emulator that will let me run the dos programs on my sharp zaurus.
I have an SL-5500 running standard sharp 3.13 rom.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Software / Opera 7 Install

After 3 attempts from downloading it from a couple different computers and feeds ... I've concluded that maybe its a bad ipkg all together.  Has anyone installed it on the Sl-5x00 and had it work?
I installed opera 7 on my sl-5500 with no problem at all. You can download the file right here on zug downloads, under packages/applications (that's the one I used). I am running standard sharp 3.13 rom. I installed it to the internal memory. Hope this helps.
--note--  do not try to uninstall opera 6, because you can't.. I think opera 7 overwrites opera 6 (not sure though).
