Accessories / Zaurus Compatible Mini Dvd Rw ?
« on: September 14, 2005, 07:38:37 pm »
Anybody know of a portable USB DVD burner drive designed for 8cm dvds ?

I think I've seen mini cd burners before, but I've never seen any for mini dvds.

Wouldn't that be an interesting addition to a future Z ?  Internal hdd, wifi, bluetooth and a built in PSP+UMD-esque 8cm DVD burner.

It would be cool it if it stuck to the bottom of the Z and had it's own special usb interface/dock.  But I guess like the PSP it would suffer from short run times due to battery drain.  But it would be cool...The OQO can't touch THAT....

In any case, I'm just wondering if such an ACCESSORY might exist at this point stand alone...

 Thanks!

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Wellenreiter Available
« on: September 14, 2005, 01:07:27 pm »
Thanks for the instructions 'Cresho', nice to have it all laid out.   I managed to get Wellenreiter working on my C1000 by gleaning tips and info from a bunch of other threads (I'm sure future noobs will be happy to only have to read 1 thread).

But the way I did it, wellenreiter will only work for about a minute and then it dies.  It detects networks in the area for sure, but it only runs for a short time. I know others have encountered this problem before, and  I'm wondering if that happens using the method you've outlined.

 Just a little curious...

 Thanks again!

else if you have installed a special kernel with iwmmxt support, you should use mplayer-bvdd-iwmmxt_1.1.5-1_arm.ipk

hope it helps...

It helps me!  That explains why mine doesn't work.  I installed the wrong verision of mplayer (though I did the other steps correctly).  I'll have to try again when I get home.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Iriver Usb Cable Problems?
« on: September 12, 2005, 01:54:38 pm »
I just posted this link

https://serialio.com//store/product_info.ph...82de18220188139

in the 'Meanies-fried-C3000-comiseration' thread, but I'll post it here too.  Serialio has been selling Z stuff for years and seem to know what their doing.  I got one from them and haven't had any problems.

As far as the regular slave cable (ie the data transfer cable) goes...Since most of us are still buying our Cxx00s new (well...maybe a few C3K's are going second hand  by now...I don't know) , so just use the cable that was bundled with the unit.

 Also,

http://www.streamlinecpus.com/store/produc...page=1&featured

You'd have to contact them for full warranty information or course, but the proprietor of this company is a regular poster on this very board and has demonstrated himself to be a very reasonble and knowledgeable individual.  So it's probably worth dropping them a line if you are really worried about an OTG cable frying your Z (and aren't we all ?).

 Best to all...

If you were to put up a donation link on your page I'd kick in a few as I along with so many others have benefited from your site. And as the bible says 'A worker deserves his wages...'

As per your advice, I apply this principle to our dear friend maslovsky as well and shall make use of his Paypal link as soon as the new Cacko rom is out

To those who are now living in fear of their USB cables, I'll repost this link:

 https://serialio.com//store/product_info.ph...82de18220188139

Serialio has been offering Zaurus accessories for years and seem to know their stuff.  I purchased one of these and haven't had any problems at all.  For $5.99 + shipping you can easily replace your iRiver OTG cable if it is simply too frightening to use again.

Accessories / Usb Foldable Keyboard
« on: September 09, 2005, 06:53:15 pm »
Looks like I have to backpeddle.  I just received one of the folding usb keyboards, and I like it MUCH better than the  rubber one.  It feels more like a regular keyboard and it is actually a bit MORE portable.

The FOLDING usb one gets my vote...

Tosh lib. U100? I'd put that in the "too big for a PDA, too small to be usable laptop" category. I think the Zaurus 6000 was at the upper limit of PDA size/weight.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=94993\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Yeah...hitting that size/weight/functionality/portability/versatility sweet spot is hard...

I'll confess to all now my indiscretion.  After binding myself to the original (well the original mainstream) Linux handheld, a Zaurus SL-5500, I had a daliance or two on the WinCE side

I picked up a Mobilepro 780 (which I upgraded with the rom from a 790), and I gotta say, typing on it was SWEET.  The keyboard was the PERFECT size. Touch typing was just like on a regular full size keyboard.  But the mobilepro is HUGE for a PDA.  Only a shade smaller than a U100.

So  I strayed yet again and picked up a Jornada 720, which is a good deal smaller.  It was typeable, but not effortlessly so.  And BOTH of these units had like the most incompatible version of WinCE possible, the 'Handheld' edition.  Ultimately, even the J720 would make you look like you were on a triple dose of viagra if you put it in your pocket (which was a step up from the Mobilepro, for which you'd have to wear overalls if you wanted to put it in you pants somehow).  When things start getting that large I kind of start wanting an optical drive of some kind.  I would totally go for a Mobilepro (900+), Flipstart, OQO if it came equipt with a (marginally PSP-esque) mini-DVD drive.

But, I think the C-series Z's are nigh perfect on size, which is why I sold my 5500, MP780, and J720 (all at a profit) to finance the purchase of my C-1000.  The keyboard is servicable even if you can't touch type (thumbs or hunt and peck gets easier with practice), but you can still slip it into a shirt pocket (though I wouldn't) or at least a Jacket pocket w/out too much trouble.

Though I haven't *quite* given up hope for the Flipstart....

But as far as the OQO goes, I think it's PRICE is what's too large.  $2K is a hefty bit of scratch for a comp in the 1ghz range.  But if it brings you down to one computer that goes everywhere and does everything, I guess it's 'convenience' is probably worth it to some...

Anyhoos, enough thread jacking, here's hopin' for a brave new future of Flipstarts and Z's with wifi and BT built in (personally I think the C-xx00 screen is fine, but I've never seen a 6000 in person...)

BTW, if you're looking at 512mb SD cards for around $50, don't.  Try NewEgg.  I just got a new *1gb* SD card from them, 66x, for under $60 including shipping.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=94318\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thanks for the tip big G.  I paid about $3 LESS  than I would have spent at Fry's and got 2x the capacity and it was still a 66x card from newegg.

I just hope it, and my folding keyboard (the fellowes rubber one begins to annoy me) get here before my departure date.

After fiddling with my new camera for a while I don't know which card will end up where.   Taking pictures at the highest resolution produces about 1 - 1.5 MB pics.  Even a 512 mb card can hold hundreds of those, whereas the 512mb card is already half full when being used as *permanent* storage on my Z...

More field research is needed here I think...

Hello all,

My september departure date draws near and soon I shall be bound for Japan..

 Ki wo tsukete, Nihonjin-tachi !

( heehee...I'm actually quite inocuous for an American...I just wanna learn Japanese...)

So I've purchased a new digital camera.  It's a realatively cheap $100 (on sale from $180 ) 5.1mp afair.   Upon being questioned, both the camera sales rep, and the memory card rep said that using high(er) speed cards in a camera like this (read: in a camera this cheap) wouldn't make much difference and would basically amount to overspending.

But these were FRY'S reps, so I take it with a grain of salt (having been such an individual fro a VERY brief time myself).

But as I stood gazing into the flash media display case I noticed 2 SD cards...among others of course.

Both were 512MB, but one was 60x and the other was 120x.  The latter was  $60, only $10 more than the 60x.  True, the reps said that the camera couldn't really benefit from faster media, but my question to all of you is...

 ...can the Zaurus ?

I already purchsed a 512MB SD for my C1000 back right when I recqived it.  This was a few months ago, so it was definitely one of the older 26x or whatever the standard was around march...it certainly isn't marked Hi-Speed.  But if my cheap camera isn't gonna care one way or the other I'll gladly throw that card in the canera and purchase a new one for my Z.

Upgrading to 1 gig is kind of tempting, but no matter what capacity I end up buying, I'm curious if the Zaurus can benefit from faster speed SD media...particularly for movie playback.  If it is a real improvement I'll probably go for it, even though the warranty on the slower card was litteraly 5 times longer...

Any advice/info you guys care to share is appreciated!

Thanks!

I'd just love to scream out

FORGET BLUETOOTH I DON'T CARE ABOUT BLUETOOTH OR SOME SERIAL DRIVER
JUST RELEASE THE BLINKIN' ROM ALREADY AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

But that wouldn't be very tactful now would it ?

 Sigh...

As eager as I am to check out what many people feel is one of the best breeds of Zaurus rom, I gotta say...

Take your time my man.  It's your project, and I know you want to do a good job on it (not to mention that you probably have a complete and  time-demanding life totally outside your Zaurus endeavors), so do it however you want.  And Thank you for sharing it and your hard work with the rest of us!

Besides, the reason everyone likes your previous efforts so much is probably because you put so much time and work into them.  No reason to change that!

So thanks again!

 (Thanks also for the update!)

I'll second that request...and add that if anyone knows of a Zaurus compatible Shougi (Japanese chess) I'd love to hear about it to.

Of course I mean primarily one that's Sharp/Cacko rom compatible, I already found the OZ variant.

 Thanks!

Thanks all!  Some good advice here.  I've downloaded 'A Byte of Python' by Swaroop C H and have start learning the mysterys of python.  It kinda feels like a cross between C++ and Perl.  Not sure I like it yet, but then I'm just starting out.

I also downloaded Qt Designer.  It's scary complex at first glace.  Reminds me of the general concept behind Visual Basic (version 6.0 is what I studied in college, never got around to the .net stuff).  I only just got it so I know I got lots yet to learn, but...um...how do you actually enter the code ?  In VB you just double click on any of the objects in the design window and it pops up a  window with your code in it.  From the QT Designer flash demo it looks like you create all the actual code completely seperately and then somehow mate it to your new gui later.

Any advice on this front (other than 'Keep tying...') ?

And how do I use PyQt with QT-D ?

Can one use PERL scripts with QT-D (yes I'm looking for an easy way out since I already now the basics of perl, although python does seem to have more power/potential than perl does...) ?

I'm just throwin' these questions out in case there are simple answers.  I know in all likelyhood these aren't simple question to answer so ya'll may not be able to help me via this forum.  BUT, if I'm over looking something simple or (again) if ya'll know of any tutorials or such I can download, I'd love to hear about it.  I'm not lookin' to have my hand held through the whole process, just a finger to point me in the right direction.

(And no, I don't mean THAT finger  )

 Thanks all!

Since I am actually a C1000 owner/user, I'll throw in my rather pedestrian mishmash.  I'll post again if/when it becomes more interesting.

But for now I'm running ye olde Sharp rom,  mcconvert'ed for english.  Consult my signature for the accessories I currently use with any frequency.

Currently working on configuring stunnel to enable gmail with pop3 from the embedded mail client .  I'm using instructions from one of these boards...

Also currently working on setting up Divx support with Mplayer and Kino, again, 'simple'  instructions are available, but as a n00b it's a little bit of an undertaking for me.

What you will hopefully see in the near future from me.

 - Cacko Rom (anxiou$ly awaiting the C1000 variant)
 - Wifi sniffer (I've heard reports of Kismet and Wellenreiter working with sharp rom,
but the instructions I've seen are little involved and I haven't had time
                     enough to tinker yet.)

 -  Opera (Netfont is not good IMHO, I didn't appreciate Opera enough on my 5500)

Problems ?  The video player chokes on a number of mpegs I throw at it, not sure why.  And my todo list items don't show up on my calendar, but other than that, it's working fine.  Oh wait, my flexible rubber keyboard's keys map  wierd (but that might be due to the Z's Japanese heritage).

This is working for me as my needs aren't too complex.  I mainly bought this device for general computing needs in a portable package during my 1 year abroad in Japan.  It can play movies (I can encode mpegs as easily as divx and I'm not a cinemaphile so the slight quality difference doesn't bother me...it's way better than on my Jornada 720) and MP3's well enough.  1.5GB is a reasonable amoung of storage for me.  I can access the web via Wifi, Wired Lan, or Modem, thus even if I can't get the mail client to work just yet, I can still access my 3 webmail accounts, not to mention get news and make reservations and other ecommerce stuff..

I've got high hopes for the Cacko Rom, but for now I'm OK...

Accessories / Usb Foldable Keyboard
« on: August 12, 2005, 01:11:56 pm »
I just got one of those flexible keyboards.  They're not too bad to type on.  Not as good  as a REAL full size keyboard, not quite as good as the KB on my Mobilepro 780.  But better, I think than the integrated keyboard if you are going to be doing a lot of typing.  Long emails or a lot of terminal work...

(Even though I think the integrated KB really isn't that bad at all...)

The build quality is pretty good (now let's see how long this thing lasts in my messanger bag as I tromp across Japan...), and it was recognized fairly easily (seems like it has to be connected when you power on the unit...).  The keys don't seem too unforgiving.  Leastwise I didn't feel as if I had to MASH them or anything, just typed normally.

One thing I DO NOT like is that  for some odd reason it has two 'enter' keys right next to each other.  One is the size of a letter key, the other is oversized  (verticaly).  A weird design IMHO.  Weirder still, it has two letter sized shift keys on each side instead of one double sized key, again right next to each other.  Same surface area, but I don't like mashin' around on the edges of keys, even if they are soft and still work it just feels wrong.

Maybe it's like that to preserve flexibility, I don't know...

Overall for $16 (shipped) I suppose I'm happy with it, but it does have it's faults.

I had the Pocketop IR keyboard before with my 5500, and I like this flexi one much better already...

 Just my opinion...

General Discussion / Zaurus Availability
« on: August 09, 2005, 06:15:56 pm »
To: Marc

Ok.... So it was only in sales and production CONCURRENTLY for 3 months (I guess 4 if you include january).

I wasn't implying you couldn't buy the C3000 anymore.  It just seemed surprising to me that the CONCCURENT sales and production time was so short.

Aparently however this is not that uncommon.  Welp...consider me educated.

Apologies if I caused any confusion to anyone!

Since we're on the subject, and just out of curiosity, are the C-1000 and C-3100  only going to have a single production run each as well ?  If it's of similar numbers I suppose 60,000 units x2 of a moderately niche (outside of Japan anyway) PDA (sorry... 'PMT' ) is plenty of stock to move.

Still no integrated wifi though...oh well...

 Thanks for the clarification Marc!
