Accessories / Psion As External Ir Keyboard For Z
« on: May 31, 2005, 10:15:29 pm »
Interesting, I once tried sending a file from my Zaurus to a friends Psion Revo, interestingly the Psion revo picked it up and said it wasn't compatible with the other PDA ^^
But yeah, I did see an old ZR clamshell zaurus, was tempted to buy it, rip it apart, and somehow develop a "clamshell keyboard addon" that would snap on to my SL5500 effectivly turning it into a clamshell pda... it'd have to be 14cm wide though which is a bit limiting, I'll probably just end up buying a Stowaway keyboard instead. I've yet to see any IR keyboards that are close to the width of the zaurus, taking another old PDA and modding it would probably be the only way.

General Discussion / New Web Site For My Zaurus Sl5500 Adventures
« on: May 31, 2005, 10:33:33 am »
Nice site ^^ I'll have to try that JSquiggle thing out, if I can find anyone else who can run it and has wifi

One question though, at the top of the page there are images of different coloured Zaurus', any idea where you can get those replacement shell's from? I'd probably opt for the black over the purple though

No Joy, QJimbo. It just links right back to

Works fine here, have you got Javascript enabled on your browser? I think thats what wayback machine uses for editing the links in pages...

We also had some funny looking devices from self importers.
We don't know where the exporter got's his Zauris from, but
these were never new ones. So if you consider a self import,
have a close look on your partner if the price is too "interesting".
Got any pics? Were these older ones put in clamshell cases or something? Sounds cool ^^

User Request for Applications / Custom Sdl Library Suggestion
« on: May 30, 2005, 11:04:05 am »
Hi folks,
As I mentioned in this post, I suggested that a custom SDL library be written, that automatically scales oversized (e.g. 640x480) games and other apps down to 320x240, for use on older zauruses or in fact any other PDA with a lower resolution screen. I don't know how well it would work since these games would've been compiled for XScales rather than StrongARM's but it's worth a shot I think. Is this possible to create?

Not to seem out of place here, but has anyone come up with some custom SDL library or something that could scale these VGA games down to 320x240 for the older Zaurii? You guys have all the fun :'( And I want OpenTTD on my zaurus as well damn it

Hi, I've just joined ... waiting for shipment of a 5500 from Ithaca NY. I intend to spend a day or two getting used to the hardware & then flash it to OZ with Opie ... will be looking over the forums for tips & tricks etc.

Welcome aboard!  Good to see you got a 5500, it's like everyone's getting C-series zaurus' and it's making me feel obsolete

5x00 Hardware / Can You Change The Body?
« on: May 29, 2005, 06:22:03 pm »
Wow such a neat effect for so little effort/cost, very cool, I might consider that...
I have had another idea though, how about sending 3D models of Zaurus body or the body itself to one of those moulding places... I can't remember the name of the technique, but they can make any shape out of plastic/metal powder, so you could have a zaurus case made out of REAL steel? It'd probably end up costing a fortune but would be so awesome

EDIT: This is what I was thinking of: http://www.zcorp.com/products/zcast.asp,  and it'd prolly end up costing over $700

5x00 Hardware / Tv-out Hardware Hack For 5500?
« on: May 29, 2005, 05:12:21 pm »
This would be extremely neat! I could load up the zaurus with videos, and play them back on a real TV  and it would be good for those executivy types who want to show a presentation easily. I think there are some Comapct Flash VGA output cards, but they can only update at one frame a second or something and require an old monitor that can cope with such low res signals.

Sorry I can't provide much technical info on the subject, but good luck ^^

Software / Which Game Emulators Run At Full Speed?
« on: May 29, 2005, 12:11:50 pm »
Dgens isn't too bad when you run it without sound on the SL5500, I can't help but feel a lot of the emulators, if properly optimized, could run at close to full speed on ARM/Xscale hardware. For example Virtual GBA was just a straight port of the x86 one, emulating the arm chip present in the GBA, instead of just cleverly passing (though it might need some processing) on instructions direct to the StrongARM present in the Zaurus.

Software / Turning A Sl5500 Into A Webserver
« on: May 28, 2005, 04:29:20 pm »
Hi folks,
Basically my plan is to turn my Sharp Zaurus SL5500 into an always on, silent, low power webserver. However I'm not sure where to begin and haven't had much luck getting apache to work on it. Can anyone give me a step by step guide on what rom to use, what webserver to install and how to install it etc.? I don't mind if it requires reflashing. I basically need a webserver which supports PHP and I might try running a MySQL on it as well.
Thanks in advance!

Hi all!
I posted about this before just under a year ago, wondered if anyone had come up with anything since then. Essencially I dissassembled my SL-5500 Zaurus a while ago, didn't put the screws for the sliding keyboard back in right, and before I know it I've lost all 4 screws  Does anyone have either a b0rked Zaurus with the screws and are willing to sell them, or information on where I can obtain such screws?
Thanks!
~jim

I forgot to mention I'm using an SL-5500, whoops

I posted this same question three or four months ago and got no response.  As soon as I can get some free time, I am going to:  1) google for small screws,  2) pester the guys down at Shadiorack,  3) start canibilizing any of the unused/nonfunctioning gadgets I have laying around for something that might work.  Alternatively, this could be a dandy excuse/rationalization for upgrading to a 6K or the phantom C960.
Yay! I got a reply!
I've also considered taking out screws from other things but couldn't find anything short enough, good luck with your quest and please tell me how you get on!
