Accessories / To Boldly Go Where No Z Has Gone Before... The Bath!
« on: May 29, 2008, 05:23:33 pm »
Ironing the pouch closed is a bit extreme  The plastic sheet I'm using has a lot of cling to it, and the pouch is quite long so there's a large section that self-seals. I'm planning on making a long clamp type thing to close it properly, though.

In any case, I don't expect to ever drop my Z in water, I'm not *that* clumsy. And I'm probably more likely to use it as weatherproofing for outdoors use instead of actually in the bath, anyway

Accessories / To Boldly Go Where No Z Has Gone Before... The Bath!

It's started getting cooler here in brisbane - natives would probably say it's freezing, but they don't know what cold is. I've consequently fallen into the habit of taking long baths in the evening with a good book (long showers are verboten due to water restrictions, and the books don't survive long). I've run out of unread books and decided I need some way of using my Z instead. Yes, I am probably nuts.

Some heavy plastic sheet, a hot iron, and 30 minutes later, and I have a waterproof pouch for my Z which is flexible enough to let me use the keyboard or a stylus easily, but heavy enough that it's unlikely to tear. I've currently got it undergoing leak testing - I put a berocca tablet and a weight into it and tossed it in the bath. If it's not filled with orange foam in the morning I might consider doing a live test...

Hey zodttd, you released psx4zaurus source code and didn't tell us!

I'm using a 16GB SDHC under an angstrom kernel perfectly atm.

I will see what I *can* release without getting scared

Thanks for that! The need isn't quite so acute anymore (since I can use openstreetmap with navit instead now) but it'd still be nice to play around with

Debian / Usb Power Issues
« on: May 15, 2008, 04:45:56 am »
I agree that the bConfigurationValue trick isn't really appropriate for more than initial debugging. There are a couple of other options:

1) Recompile the kernel with the new current limit, or
2) Add udev rules for each device that exceeds the kernel power limit.

The kernel limit is set in spitz.c, and by default is at 150mA. Fixing this is the best all-round option, except that compiling a Z kernel is a pain.

The udev option is the proper way of applying the bConfigurationValue trick, and only has to be done once for each device. You want to make a new file called 99-usbpower.rules or similar in /etc/udev/rules.d, containing rules like this (note the =='s and ='s):

Code: [Select]
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="vendorid", ATTR{idProduct}=="productid", ATTR{bConfigurationValue}=1Then do a "udevcontrol reload_rules". The rule will forcibly select device configuration 1 whenever the usb device with the specified vendor and product id is inserted.

I've been using the udev option for my Huawei 3G modem. It's too bad I didn't use a small enough resistor when doing the usb power mod, because I still can't get enough current - it's enough to initialise the device now, but not enough to turn the transmitter on! I'm going to have to pull my Z apart again *shudder*

Hardware Mods / C1000,c3xxx Stereo In, Internal Mic, Wifi, Bt

RINPUT2 and LINPUT2 are wired on the top side to a metalized holes and then traces continue on the reverse side of PCB. I don't have needed photos to trace them yet.

Ok, I was wrong, those points do go to vias, but they only go to the next layer down, not the other side of the board (full depth vias are bigger.) However the only place they eventually go to are test points N501 and N502; the schematic is specific. No, I don't know where those points are, nothing I have gives a physical location of the test points. For all I know they're under the CF connector...

You're free to pursue your option, of course; I just know what route I'll be taking when I get around to doing this mod myself (I investigated it a long time ago, actually - but only just got brave enough to open my Z a couple days ago  )

Well, first things first, RINPUT1 is not just tied to ground; it's connected to pin 2 on the jack. I don't think it's a "historical" leftover or anything - smartest thing to do is to look at eviljazz's driver source to see exactly what is being done with that signal. (headphone/microphone detection perhaps?)

Easier to target RINPUT2/LINPUT2 (pins 25/26 on the chip) anyway - they are not connected to anything on the schematic, and the pictures of the board only show a couple of stub traces covered by solder mask, no vias. Since the chip pins are accessible and larger than those traces, it's probably easiest just to solder straight to them.

Seems to work perfectly for me. Thanks dz!

what's more interesting is extracting the software from the device and running it on the zaurus
Hey, wasn't someone working on that ages ago? Too bad he never got around to releasing anything...

For Sale / Wanted / Fs: Sl-c3100 With Extras Very Good Condition
« on: April 23, 2008, 10:54:28 pm »
I can vouch for the excellent condition of the unit, having been the one who forced Debian into it (it was a bit of a fight...)

Rarez, sorry to see you're getting rid of the zaurus... but then again it didn't really seem like you were getting your money's worth out of it anyway, so it's probably the right decision. See you again at Humbug sometime?

Debian / Socket Bluetooth (debian Eabi)

When i tried with socket i've got:
bcsp-recv: Out-of-order packed arrived, got 1 expected 0
bcsp-recv: Error in BSCP hdr checksum

Sure, but what does hciconfig say? I get those errors on occasion but it doesn't stop the interface from coming up.

However it does tend to spew those errors continually to the log after a suspend/resume until I kill and restart hciattach.

Or just try this instead:

Debian / Dualbooting/multiplebooting With Kexec!
« on: March 27, 2008, 09:41:38 pm »
Heh - triplebooting cacko/pdaxii/debian is on my list

Matthis - The kernel you kexec with needs the partition info hardcoded into the boot string (mtdparts=blah) to work properly, otherwise the system only sees a very truncated (and hence corrupted) filesystem. I recompiled the pdaXrom kernel to match my NAND layout; you can do the same thing with the sharprom. EvilJazz's kernel tarball has a nice script which completely automates building all the 2.4 kernel variants.
