Debian / What Are The Dual Booting Possibilities Currently?
« on: February 10, 2008, 04:16:44 am »
Hey All,

I'm trying to do some major catching up with the times and am going to try out Debian EABI on my 3100. I'd like to be able to keep a super stable platform that I could also boot into if possible such as Cacko or PdaXii13 at the same time. For performance issues I'd rather run both ROMs on my internal MD but would be willing to boot one from SD or wherever needed to accomplish the task if necessary. I know back in the day Uboot and some other utilities were being created with this option in their wishlist of functionalities...I don't know if they ever came about though.

Has our developement progressed far enough to allow this yet, if so can someone point me in the right direction to learn how?

Thanks Everyone!

All of the below items except for one Tosa and the sled were sold along with a slew of other cf peripherals and a bluetooth mouse/keyboard to a gentleman in here in Eastern NC.  I am TERRIBLY sorry for not updating this post quickly and accurately as I have been sick through the holidays and ealry January.  For now I plan to keep the one 6000l, I'm hoping to gift it to my daughter if she ever becomes responsible enough that I feel she won't lose it!

God Bless All!
1-20-2008

The following items will be sold by me after the 1st of December, 2007
These will PROBABLY be sold via EBAY- I am listing them here as some of the items are EXCEEDINGLY rare and it will give forum users a heads-up ahead of time!:

TWO (2) Sharp SL-6000L's (Tosa)
I believe I have all original manuals, boxes, docking station, CD's, Adapters and cables etc. for one of them.
I was the original owner of this unit and it has been handled with the utmost care and had a screen protecter on it from day one.

For the second I have all the hardware, (such as cables, docking station etc.), that came with it originally as well as a slightly damaged box, but not the ALL the original packing materials, manuals, or original CD. (However I can provide a burned copy of the original "albeit completely useless" CD if needed.) I bought this unit used but in perfect condition and it has been practically unused since. (It also immediately recieved a screen protecter upon becoming my property.)

Both are in pristine condition with the exception of the "flip-up" clear plastic screen LIDS, (I am NOT talking about the screens themselves), that have some scratches, as Sharp intelligently constructed them of the worlds most-easily-scratchable material EVER. The LCD screens are perfect. Bodies are not scratched or even buffed anywhere on any painted surface or sides. The backs show some minor scuffing where they have contacted desktops etc. When the time comes I'll post gobs of pictures for all interested parties to peruse.

ONE (1) Sharp CE-JC2 (Yup the incredibly RARE Expansion Sled for the SL-6000 series.)
I have the original box and packaging material for it, as I've been it's original owner since Amazon.com traded it to me for my hard earned cash a few years back.
To clear any rumors of this device up- it comes with and adds one additional battery, (an identical one to the one in your SL-6000), it also has an additional CF-Slot, and extends your serial port from the bottom of your Z to a second port. So, YES it gives you a second CF slot like those lucky SL-C3x00 guys except both of yours are accessible, and YES it doubles your battery life, but no it DOESN'T give you a second serial port, it just extends your first one to another location. WHY? We've never figured that out.

ONE (1) Sharp CE-VR1 (This device is easily 100 times rarer than the above expansion sled.)
DEFINITION- This is an MPEG-4 recorder that takes RCA composite video, Right and Left Stereo inputs from ANYWHERE and records it in MPEG-4 directly to any flash memory device or CF Microdrive so long as you have an adapter. Using various adapters I've successfully recorded to CF Flash, MicroDrives, SD-Cards, PCMCIA FLASH DRIVES, MMC cards, and even Micro-SD cards. File size is only limited by the size of your flash media. I'm including a PCMCIA to CF adapter to get whoever buys it started. This device was only marketed originally in Japan and was made for us folks who were video encoding challenged. I have marked and translated the important buttons that are needed to know in order to operate the device. I don't know a huge amount about this device as I never played with it as much as it deserved.
I have the original box, cables, etc. I purchased it used and it is in good working order.

ONE or TWO spare batteries Sharp EA-BL09.
Brand new- Still in sealed packages in original boxes. Kept refrigerated since new.

ONE (1) Black Piel Frama Leather Custom Case.

THE REASON I'M SELLING these items is because I simply can no longer can afford the time/money/mental faculties required to keep up with the Zaurus/Linux lifestyle. My almost 10 year battle against lyme disease and neurological problems has diminished my physical and mental resources to the extent that I'll be doing well to hang on to to a single SL-C3100 that I have and use the most dummy proof ROM available (pdaxromii13 for right now). I can no longer avoid the need to switch over to a windows based UMPC device just for the simplicity and compatibility factors. Hopefully I can generate enough cash to buy the nicest Sony VAIO UX series possible or something better.

I'd VERY much rather see these rather rare items go to good homes where they will be USED instead of languishing away until they are totally obsolete only to become museum displays that catch dust. Together they made one of the best combinations and collections of SL-6000 era peraphanalia assembled. I need the money and hopefully someone will find need of some of these items and give them a good friend!

These won't be sold at a discount. I cannot afford to. I must get as much of my investment out of them as possible as I have no earned income and never will again. Please be aware that I'm not naive to the worth of the worth of these items. Feel free to send me a personal offer if you wish to either my email or my forum account.  If I'm not sure that an offer is appropriate I'll simply wait and let a No Reserve posting on Ebay settle the question for sure rather than beat myself silly haggling offers back and forth. I'm posting here so that if someone actually sees and understands their worth they can make an offer before I begin ebay proceedings on the first of December. If there is not sufficient interest generated here I'll begin by listing the first SL-6000L on Ebay on the 1st of December. Once that auction ends I'll be listing the second SL-6000L and then the CE-JC2, and the CE-VR1 in succession. I haven't decided about whether I'll include the Piel Frama Case and Batteries in with the SL-6000's or if I'll sell them all seperately.

While this marks a closing door for me in my Zaurus journey and this platform, hopefully it will open the doors for several bright beginnings for others with their experience what will always be the best handheld I've ever owned, the SL-6000!

Wishing everyone the best and brightest!

A quick preface- I'm only posting this here as well as in the Wanted/Trading forum to give the maximum amount of tosa users a heads up about these items (especially the expansion sled) and knowledge of their upcoming availability.  To be frank the import of some of these items will be lost on 99% of the usual perusers of the For Sale/Wanted forum.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Stowaway Thinkoutside Bluetooth Keyboard Mouse
« on: April 21, 2007, 12:47:04 am »
Hey All,

I'm currently running pdaXii13/full5.3.5 on my C3100 and am EXTRAORDINARILY pleased with it, but I've run into some REALLY irksome problems with getting some hardware that worked VERY easily with either Sharp or Cacko to run under it.

At the top of my most coveted hardware that I'd like to use but cannot get to function are my:

Think Outside Stowaway Bluetooth Keyboard (Model # XTBT01)

and

Think Outside Stowaway Travel Mouse (Model # MSBT01)

I've found a post or so by searching the forums here that vaguely refer to bluetooth mice etc. and one single success story (that only worked at the cost of losing all touch screen functionality...ouch) about someone who had a different brand bluetooth mouse.  I did find one post that made reference to these exact model devices that I have, whose author inferred that since these Stowaway devices are Microsoft HID compliant they should be a cinch to get working as long as you had a working bluetooth card/dongle and could see the keyboard/mouse via it.  I also see that under the IR keyboard drivers thread there is a poster who claims to have used them to have gotten his Bluetooth keyboard to work...I have NO idea how he managed this...maybe the keymapping portion was what he was referring to, I'm not sure because he didn't elaborate at all.

Is this true (about the HID compliancy making things so easy?) Because while I do have two dongles and two cf bluetooth solutions (all of which I can transfer files back and forth with my cellphone with) that seem setup correctly, and I can seem to see the mouse (but not the keyboard) I just can't seem to get them operating.

Am I chasing a hopeless case?

Oh and btw, I already tried the solution that worked for the one other success story I found here on the forums for the mouse and it did NOT work for me, and even if it did I'm not willing to completely give up being able to use my stylus when I don't have the ability to plug the mouse in! So it's not a good solution for me at all.

PdaXii13 is just so polished and fabulous and so hardware flexible it was actually fairly astounding to see how bluetooth "dumb" it was when it came to i/o devices.

Of course there is ALWAYS the possibility that I'm the dummy and there is an easy solution to this that I've just missed! Thanks in advance for your help!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Remove Cpu/mem Applet In Pdaxii13?

Tap and hold always worked for me to get the dialog in matchbox on pdaxii13.

This is the first time I have heard of, or tried right click on the taskbar.
Fn+tap or right click with a mouse, (I plugged in a mouse to try this, to be sure my "Fn" key wasn't borky), makes the pointer disappear and gets no response from the taskbar.
Clicking the stylus again makes the pointer re-appear.
Also, I just now noticed, if you tap anywhere on the desktop, and then press and hold "Fn" the pointer will disappear.
The last statement has nothing to do with the taskbar, but it is something I have just discovered.

EDIT:
nevermind about the pointer disappearing after holding the "Fn" key, it disappears after a certain amount of time anyway...

Enclosed screenshot is showing tap and hold on the taskbar.

JonJ

The reason your Z behaves differently for emulating right clicks is because you have different settings selected in your Input Setup. If you click on "X" then "System Utilities" then "Input Setup" you can choose one of two methods for emulating right mouse clicks with the screen pointer. The first is to check the box and then it will behave as yours does (press and hold), OR you can select a key to hold while you click.
I still have mine set up as the default which is as described by Zdevil in his post above. (I'm using hdimage-full5.3.5)  I'm not sure if you have changed the setting sometime in the past or if maybe an older version of it had a different default setting.

=)  Hope that helps explain it!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Remove Cpu/mem Applet In Pdaxii13?
« on: April 14, 2007, 09:44:41 pm »
Quote
If you know how to ADD, you should also see how to REMOVE:
right click (Fn + tap) the taskbar, choose Remove, then pick the item.
Although i am not using pdaXii, but i suppose it is just the same method. Or am i wrong here?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=158865\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

That's not how they were added originally, we simply clicked the "x (start)" button, selected Utilities, then Panel, then Cpu/mem Monitor from the list and it added it to the bar.  I'm going now to try the remove method you descibed, hopefully it will work!

I was sure it was something simple like that, just couldn't figure out for the life of me what it was. I really need to track down the comprehensive documentation for pdaXrom/pdaxii13. I know it must exist, I just need to find it

THANK YOU ZDevil for your quick and kindly response, I shall try to struggle to be as apt of a pupil as you are an instructor!

Thanks again,

-NeuroShock

UPDATE:

Yup, Worked perfectly just as you described. Thank you for your quick concise reply! I fixed my problem AND learned the PROPER way to add as well as remove applets.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Remove Cpu/mem Applet In Pdaxii13?
« on: April 14, 2007, 07:37:47 pm »
Alright,

I'm sure this has a simple silly answer but I haven't found it through searching the forums here or poking around for hours so....

How do I delete the cpu/mem applet(s) from the pdaxii13 taskbar (using Rox if that makes a diff)?

It seems simple enough to ADD applets, ironically that simplicity is why I now need to DELETE the applets as my friend thoughtfully put two extra identical cpu/mem monitor applets up there while fiddling around so now I have THREE running simultaneously.  It's intuitive enough to add applets, I would think it would be as easy to delete them, but it's evading me.

Thanks in advance.

need help!

my wifi "pretec" does not work on the zaurus.  But it does identify it as a pretec wifi cf card in the terminal.  when i plug it into the the cf slot, it identifies it in the cards applet as agere system wifi or soemthing.  anyway to help the wifi software work with the cf wifi?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=158639\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hey Cresho,

After reading your post I remembered that I have 2 of those pretec cards I bought off the HSN ages ago that I dug out of an old tote box and dropped into my c3200 (running the latest initrd with hdimige-full v5.5.5beta) and have the EXACT same issues. I THINK I might can shed some light on the problem.

I was never able to get these cards to work natively on cacko/sharp unless I manually edited a listing for them if I remember correctly. You could get around that by flashing them up to a more recent firmware and then they could used with the vanilla HOSTAPI drivers. (I believe this might be what pdaxii13 is trying to do.) But I never updated my firmware because I never had a linuxbox available at the time I wanted to do it and so never got it done.

So my question is ... can we manually make a seperate listing for them like we did under sharp/cacko?  Or if we update the firmware in them can they be used with pdaXii13?

It'd be cool either way because they're smaller and use less juice than my Dlink DCF-660W! I'd forgotten I even had them or I'd be trying to use them already.

But again I get the exact same symptoms you do...they get Identified as Agere Systems Heremes-I ..... and never initialize.

Maybe that info will get us a step closer. Hope it helps a bit!

While I WOULD like to see this problem fixed for the future I would like to be forward with the fact that since posting this thread enough time passed without finding a solution that I had to take the plunge and find a different less eloquent solution for me.

I have converted my SL-C3100 over to pdaXii13 and am using it for all my X/ workstation needs and have confiscated one of the families SL-6000L's back and am using it to run all my native and propriety SHARP based software.

Having to lug around both of them is ...troubling to say the least but seems my only realisitc option unless I can figure out what is blocking my progress in this thread.

Thanks everyone,

YES I DID miss your update Fatty! We apparently were making simultaneous discoveries!  There is NOTHING better than discovering you've invented the wheel for the second time... *sigh* I'm always a day late and a dollar short. But again Thanks again to both you AND Jon for your recent posts as you jumped in just about the time I was about to take the hard way out!

Yes Indeed,

First for clarities sake:

The problem was NOT with the scripts or even related to the fact that the microdrives had been replaced with Compact Flash cards, it was JUST that our browsers were downloading the file and retagging the suffix as .tar instead of .tgz.  Both of us affected were using IE7 for reference.

Now,

A final small question,

The installation instructions say that the user will be prompted to copy the /home and /etc directories from the microdrive to the NAND area upon reboot.  While the script DID work wonderfully this time and reformatted the partition and expanded the image and I'm now in with all the zillion programs showing etc. I never recieved this message, (or if I did I never it scrolled by me without me catching it).  Likewise, if I'm not supposed to use the CP command to copy those directories I have no idea how to go about it. So....

Do /home and /etc still need copied?

and

if so, how do I accomplish this correctly?

Um...but now I have a problem....Does anyone have a copy of the 5.3.3 hdimage-full.tar that they used? Or heck I'll try the 5.3.4 if someone can link me to that one...

If your downloaded hdimage-full has the *.tar extension, it could be that your browser screwed it up, or tried to extract it as it was downloaded.
All my pdaxii13 spitz hdimages are this format:
hdimage-full.tgz

Try using a download helper, such as flashget (windows) or whatever is used on a linux box for linux.

Link to meanie's files for pdaxii13-spitz (build5.3.5 beta)

DANG!

Sure enuf all my hdimages are downloaded as .tar files...downloaded them via WindowsXP....*sigh* Might have been my whole problem all along. I'll let you all know tomorrow when I get to try again. Thanks JonJ for the post and quick eye for essential detail!

I appear to have the same issue.

My C3100 (with MD replaced with 4G CF) was originally installed with 5.3.3 and old hd full image and worked just fine. Today I tried to install 5.3.5 and have exactly the same issue as NeuroShock :- tried Installing hdimage but just get back to main menu.

I flashed back to 5.3.3 and my own custom hd (500Mb! almost 2 hours to recover) and with no problem.

So the issue doesn't seem to relate to CF size.

Sadly I just let it do the auto thing.

Have you considered using a big sd card and doing the akita full-on-sd approach?  It'll use a little less juice, I bet.

I think it is linked around a bit. my mount command gives me:
 /dev/hda1 on /media/fakeroot
and
/dev/hda1 on /usr

/mount /ide exists, but is empty.

Still, I think you might try playing with the flash scripts--- I had to manually partition mine (I had been playing with the drive geometry, I think) but after the 3 partitions were made and formatted (to a slightly different size than meanie's scripts expect) I was able to use the flash tool for installing a hard drive image. It just grabbed my 1.5 gig 1st partition, formatted and untarred---  the auto scripts had not worked for me, so I think you might have a similar result
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=158375\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Ok,

You're the only game in town right now so let's follow your lead as much as I can.

First, I can't do the install to SD approach simply because I'm SD-less right now so that's a dead ender for me.

Now, I keep seeing you mention the scripts and your editing of them. What scripts are you speaking of? Oh wait. I think your referring to the pdaXii13 Installation ROM setup options.  Right. Hmmm.....oh goodness. I wonder...? I wonder if the hdimage install script option actually tries to format the drive first and when it does it finds that my 6.5gb partition is beyond it's capacity to do so for some reason and simply bounces me back to the install screen?

Maybe you've hit the nail on the head. I'll go resize my partitions to roughly the same size as they would be in megabytes to the default install and then see if the scripts can pick things up from there in  either the installation option for hdimage install or either through untarring it manually.  It's certainly worth a try.

If not, I think I'm eventually going to end up reinstalling the original Microdrive long enuf to get a good install and then copy the partitions over to my 8gb Flash drive and reverse the process.....by talking my 18 yr old daughter through the procedure.  She'll have to be my hands since mine shake too badly.  It'll be a good experience for here....but a scary one for me!

Thanks Adf, if you think of anything else feel free to nudge me again!
