For Sale / Wanted / For Sale: C750
« on: January 25, 2010, 01:40:41 pm »
Hi everyone.
I'm looking at selling my C750 (the thin one with the black screen). It's been great, but I now need to merge my PDA and phone. Hopefully the N900 is as open as everyone says it is. Otherwise I might go for an Android phone.

It's in great condition, apart from a tiny piece of plastic missing from around the stylus hole (this does not have any real negative impact on usage). It comes with:
- US charger + UK adapter
- USB cable
- 2 batteries (the original is probably near-dead by now, but the other is fairly new)
- Pilot Pentopia extending stylus (WORTH EVERY PENNY)
- Spectrum CF WiFi card
- Maybe some other SD/CF cards
- I might actually have the box and manuals around somewhere. If anyone is interested I'll see if I can find them.

I imported this from Japan about 3 years ago- it cost me over £250 in the end.

The question is, how much is it worth now? I noticed there hasn't been a Zaurus on ebay for months if not years now, so supply is limited, but is there still a demand, or is everyone else also going for the new Linux based phones?

Is anyone interested in this, and how much would you pay for it? I would prefer to ship within the UK if possible, but I will consider other destinations.

Thanks.

Cxx0 Hardware / Battery Life
« on: August 10, 2007, 04:45:46 pm »
How long does the battery last on your zaurus if you leave it on (with and without wifi running)?
I'm mainly interested in the C750, but I'd like to see how the other models compare.

With wifi I can barely get 30 minutes on mine, and even without an hour is pushing it. Is it worth buying a new battery or is battery life generally a problem for zaurii?

What difference does under-clocking make?

Thanks

For Sale / Wanted / Wanted: Large Battery And Cover
« on: July 30, 2007, 09:39:13 am »
So I finally managed to get a C series Zaurus from conics.net. Ironically, just a few weeks later about 5 C-series zaurii come up on ebay UK, including 2 C750s which went for half the price I paid for mine and came with accessories as well.

Anyway...
I think the battery on mine is not as good as it should be, so I need a replacement. I'm thinking of trying to get the large battery, such as the C760 and C860 has, but where can I get one, and more importantly, where can I get the cover for it?

Thanks

Sharp ROMs / Ka/pi Ko/pi Irda Sync
« on: July 16, 2007, 07:41:23 am »
I'm trying to sync ka/pi and ko/pi on my C750 with my phone via irda. I want to get all the contacts off my 9500 and then setup syncing with my 6230i (both Nokia). I'm running it in konsole to get more info, but that's not being very helpful.

If I don't start any irda services (via "irattach /dev/ttyS1", "/etc/rc.d/irda start" or via the settings application), then ka/pi waits for a while and then says that the device timed out. This makes sense, since /dev/ircomm is being specified as the device, not /dev/ttyS1, so irattach needs to be running to connect ircomm to the actual device.

If I do start irattach, it instantly says "Error opening device. Unknown/busy or no permissions."- which looks like it can't open /dev/ircomm. But, /dev/ircomm is owned by user "zaurus" anyway (with 700 perms) and chmodding to 777 makes no difference. fuser /dev/ircomm shows nothing is using it. The phones both show up correctly in /proc/net/irda/discovery.

It doesn't matter which phone I try it with. It doesn't matter if I leave the model setting in ka/pi blank or put in 6310 or 9500 or 6230- same result every time.

So I'm stuck. IrDA is one of those things I have spent lots and lots of time configuring on various systems and know plenty about, but always always have problems with and far too often can never fix them (I can't actually get IrDA working at all on my laptop- everything attaches to the the device but nothing comes out of the LED- but that's another story).

If anyone has managed to get ka/pi and/or ko/pi to sync via irda please make yourself known- along with the settings you used.

I would probably be able to get much further with gammu or gnokki directly, but those packages aren't available (then again they've been modified in ka/pi anyway).

Thanks

Sharp ROMs / Ipkg Confused- Again
« on: July 12, 2007, 06:11:58 pm »
Please could someone explain how cacko is setup regarding permissions and security- especially regarding ipkg.

I set a root password as soon as I had installed Cacko. I then wanted to install some software. The graphical tool 1. sucks, and 1b. crashed, so I gave up and used the command line ipkg- which I prefer anyway. As expected, the command line ipkg can't do anything as a normal user due to a lack of permissions. So I ran it as root. Fine. I installed vim-full, zuc and japanese-support and tried to install japanese-dict before it reminded me that I was still trying to install to root and had run out of space.

Now I'm stuck. It successfully removed vim-full and zuc, but fails on japanese-support. If I run "ipkg remove" as root it complains that: "Qt/Embedded data directory is not owned by user 0", "Aborted". Interestingly it says this twice and then exits, returning 134 if that makes any difference. But if I run it as the default user it fails due to the lack of permissions.

So I have some questions:
1. Just to make sure, the GUI itself doesn't run as root, right?
2. What user does the graphical package manager run as? Is it setuid root or something?
3. What user am I supposed to run the command line ipkg as?
4. Why can't I remove japanese-support?
5. Is there a way of getting ipkg to produce more output of what it is doing (I tried -v but that didn't help)?
6. What is the "Qt/Embedded data directory"?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Ghosting Again- Where Is Zaurushw?
« on: July 11, 2007, 06:25:02 pm »
As recommended I have installed pdaXii13. I've had the ghosting problem in every ROM I've tried so far, and haven't been able to get rid of it. Fiddling with the settings in the DM menu doesn't do anything. It always looks perfect in the menu, but pdaX seems to be ignoring the settings or something. I have no idea how to view or change them when pdaX is running, and having to reboot every time is very annoying. One thread mentioned that fiddling with zaurushw fixed it, but I can't find zaurushw anywhere. Where has it gone?

Any ideas?
Thanks

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Where Is The Assembler?
« on: July 11, 2007, 07:38:35 am »
I've installed gcc, but ./configure complains that the compiler cannot create executables. Looking in config.log I find that gcc cannot execute 'as', and sure enough, I can't find 'as' anywhere, not even in the feed.

Where do I get a Zaurus assembler from?

Thanks

Zaurus - pdaXrom / What Interface Does Pdaxrom Use?
« on: July 10, 2007, 10:35:31 am »
What interface does pdaXrom use by default? GPE? If so, what have they done to it? Has it been forked? It's completely different to the OZ version (which appears to be the official one)- it looks way better, but has major usability problems.

Thanks

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Which Rom To Use?
« on: July 08, 2007, 01:06:27 pm »
Hello everyone.
I've just got a new C750 and am trying to install pdaXrom on it. (I've got quite a bit of experience of flashing SL-5500 and SL-6000L).

Which version should I use? The pdaXrom site has only "latest testing", "previous testing" and "previous stable". What about "latest stable"?

I tried beta1 (since there is no C750 beta3), but it doesn't flash properly. Have reverified and recopied  but same problem.

Normally I would never use anything marked as "testing", but is that what I should be using? How stable is it?

Thanks

For Sale / Wanted / Wanted: C860 Or C750
« on: May 29, 2007, 08:06:41 am »
EDIT: Looking for a C860 or C750.

Original post follows...
Hello everyone.

I'm looking at getting a C series Zaurus (finally), after being out of the market for ages (My Nokia 9500 is pretty good, but I miss Linux, and the lack of a VPN client is very annoying- I can't use the wireless at uni).

However, I'm still not sure which one I want. As I can't stand typing on mobile phone keypads, the idea is use my Nokia 6210i and connect via bluetooth for text messaging.

USB Host would be nice (and an internal CF slot), but I think the Cxx00's look too thick and bulky for my liking.
I really like the look of the 750, and the 700 isn't bad, but I'm concerned that the battery life might become a problem. So an 860 (I think the 760 looks awful)?

This all depends on availability and price. At the moment, C3x00's are plentiful. C7x0/860's are somewhat harder to find.

Is anyone willing to sell their 7x0/860?
How much would you want for it?

Thanks
Simon

General Discussion / Comparison Of C700/750, C860 And C3x00
« on: May 29, 2007, 07:36:09 am »
Hello.
I'm looking at trying to get a clamshell Zaurus (finally).

However, I'm really not too keen on the look of the C3x00 series. They look too thick.
Please could someone post pictures of side views of a C3x00 compared with the 700/750 and 860 devices, with the cover shut.

Thanks

For Sale / Wanted / For Sale - Zaurus Sl-6000l With Accessories
« on: August 27, 2006, 12:40:31 pm »
Hello.
I think everyone is about to call me a traitor   , but I'll carry on anyway...

I have a Sharp Zaurus SL-6000L (WiFi, no bluetooth). It was a bit pricey for me when I bought it, and I just don't use it enough. Before I got into the Zaurus market my intention was to have a fairly simple clamshell PDA. However, the C-3x00 series looks too square, and is also pretty expensive (and not really simple either ). I've found what I've been looking for (or as near as I can get- I wish it ran Linux), and now own a Nokia 9500. However this means I need to sell my Zaurus.

It's in good condition, but has been used, carried around, etc- the silver paint is slightly worn around the corners and the screen protector has marks on it. The screen itself is immaculate, as is the main body of the device.

I still have the box, manuals, software, charger, cradle, docking slot protector, CF protector, etc. I would also be selling (or including):

- 2 USB host adapters (mini-A male to A female)(it would probably cost 10 pounds to get hold of one)
- 2.5mm (right angle) to 3.5mm jack adapter (short cable type)
- Various "The Kompany" software that came with it (about 75 pounds worth I was told)
- A complete travel kit (thin flexi USB cable, car charger, universal plug adapter)
- Battery extender (4 AA's)(missing cover though)

I'm looking for about 320, but I'm open to offers.

Thanks

OpenBSD / Bootloader? Boot From C-3x00 Internal Cf?
« on: November 01, 2005, 03:41:59 pm »
Hi all.
Thinking of buying a C-3100 and came across some install instructions for OpenBSD.
To me it sounded like either the C-3x00 boot directly from their internal CF slot, or you've got a bootloader which can.

I'm not actually planning to put OpenBSD on it (sorry lol), but I'm planning on messing around with kernels and a self-compiled setup. Unfortunately I can't afford to have my PDA out of action if something goes wrong, so I need some sort of dual boot setup. Or be able to swap the internal drive around (or better still choose between internal flash, internal CF and external CF or something).

Any suggestions or comments much appreciated.
Thanks
Simon

Accessories / Power Socket/plug/connector Name
« on: October 05, 2005, 03:02:12 pm »
Hi.
Does the power socket/plug/connector that all the zaurii use have a name? Is it a standard adapter used with other things? What do I ask for if I want one? Does anyone know of any other devices/power units that use that connector?

At the moment the main purpose of this knowledge is I want to buy a USB 2.5" HDD case which uses the same power connector as the Z. That way I can use my battery extender with the HDD case, and I get a USB to [Z power connector] cable which I can use with my travel kit to charge my 6000L (Thanks a bunch sharp- I can't use the keyboard with the 6k plugged in ).

Thanks

6000 - Tosa / Bootloader For 6000
« on: September 28, 2005, 12:13:42 pm »
Hi.
I'm sure this has probably been asked before, but here goes (I did try searching first)...

The big picture- I am a nutcase and want to mess around with compiling my own stuff for the Z on the Z, and dual booting.

What I really need in order to get anywhere is a bootloader.
I have no idea how the Z boot process works in terms of the BIOS, but i'm assuming it's somewhat similar to that of your average PC.
i.e. The BIOS does whatever it needs to and then runs whatever is in the special location (the MBR) of the primary master hdd (which in this case would actually be the internal rom).
Please correct me and provide additional info on the Z's boot process if you can.

So your PC loads lilo (or grub if you must) from the MBR on /dev/hda, and enables you to ignore /dev/hda completely and boot from /dev/hdb3 or similarly obscure partition on a totally different non-removable device.

I want to make my Z boot whatever loader from the internal rom, which will allow me choose between booting from the internal rom (the sharp rom or whatever else i have loaded), and ignoring it completely and booting from /dev/hda1 or /dev/mmcda1 or something.

Potential problems include:
1. Making the bootloader think that the CF card is a non-removable device (e.g. lilo won't boot from CDROM).
2. Drivers are probably required for the SD/CF cards to allow booting from them.
I've heard something about a project to use the linux kernel as a bootloader- which will allow it to use standard kernel driver modules. I can't find any info about this on google though.
3. Does the bios even boot to a space that I can alter?

I have looked at some of the posts about booting OZ from an SD card, but they seem to boot the kernel on the rom and then use that to boot the sd- so they must both use the same kernel (I'm trying to do this so I can mess with booting self-compiled kernels without killing the sharp rom). Seems strange to me, as I'm sure that OZ uses a different kernel.

Thanks
Simon
