Angstrom & OpenZaurus / One Way Link?
« on: January 12, 2005, 04:21:07 pm »
I don't think this will come to anything, and I doubt that such a thing exists, but here goes...

There are many things that keep getting put in places i do not want them to go, documents .desktop entries, application entries, etc.

Is it possible to make a one way link, so that any files sent to them will end up where the link is pointing, but the link would not be readable: i.e. nothing would think that there is a file there.

e.g.1: ln -s -[one way link option] /opt/QtPalmtop/apps/Applications/calculator.desktop /opt/QtPalmtop/apps/1Pim/calculator.desktop
if i relink all packages on the sd, where the calculator is installed, or if the calculator app is updated/reinstalled, the link which would be in applications now ends up in pim. But, when opie goes looking for .desktop entries to add icons for, it finds the one in the Pim folder, but NOT the one in the applications folder.

e.g.2: ln -s -[one way link option] /root/Documents/text /dev/null
so that all of the .desktop files the text editor keeps adding get thrown into the bit bucket, never to bother me again. (i just have to remember not to save anything there- unlikely to happen anyway).

um, yeah, well thats the idea anyway...

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Turn Off Alarms?
« on: January 06, 2005, 03:25:09 pm »
I have just found out that if you delete an alarm in the todolist it doesn't actually do anything. They appear to have been deleted, but if you go back into that item they are back, or if the time comes the alarm still goes off. I know the solution to this would be to change the date to one that has already passed, but it's not supposed to do this, and if many alarms have been set it can be a bit annoying having to change the date on all of them rather than tapping delete a few times.
There doesn't seem to be a problem with the calendar, but this sets the alarms differently.
I have also noticed a similar problem with the clock alarms: they may still go off even if enabled is unchecked. The workaround for this is to unselect all the days.

I know there was a suspend bug associated with the alarm system, but I haven't been able to find any info on this problem.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Package Manager
« on: January 05, 2005, 10:49:26 am »
I don't want to sound like I'm slagging off the developers here, because they are doing a great job, but...

Why is the package manager that comes with OZ 3.5.2 Opie soooo slow?
Konqueror installed ok, but I left it going and came back an hour later, so I have no idea how long it actually took. Konqueror doesn't seem to like my net connection, so I tried to install opera. 3 crashes and 40 mins later it finishes.
I have tried installing the packages from the fat partition on my sd, the ext partition on my sd (where they are going) and a nfs network share via wifi (i think this is a slight improvement), but they are all still depressingly slow.

I have a rom with 46 megs of ram, and it never has less than 2 megs spare.
Whilst installing packages, the graphical version makes the whole z unusable for the duration of the installation. It sometimes crashes, especially if I try to do anything else.
When I use the command line version, it seems to have a higher success rate, and the z will at least respond if i press a button or tap something.

Is this a known bug?
How can I speed it up? It's like it's only using the 64k cache or something.
What package manager does everyone else use?

Thanks for the help

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Internet Connection Issues (not The Zs Fault)
« on: December 13, 2004, 12:28:20 pm »
I was hoping to get an ADSL ethernet modem, which would solve everything, but thats taking a while.
I have a pc running window$ xp connected to the internet.
This is connected to my ethernet and shares the internet using a proxy.
My Z is connected to my laptop via usbnetwork/irda/whatever, which runs Slackware Linux 9.1 (kernel 2.6.8.1).
My laptop can access the internet.
My Z can ping my laptop and the window$ pc.
The windows pc can ping my laptop and my Z.
But the proxy server is bound to the ethernet subnet. Now I was hoping that it would let the Z through as it is coming from that interface, but i dont think it is. Due to the inherrent security issues with windows, it also has to run a firewall when connected to the net, and I cant test to see if its the firewall or the proxy server which is blocking the z.

I have the following problems:
1. ipkg doesnt support proxies
2. the proxy doesnt want to let the z through anyway

I have broadband, and I dont mind spending a day or two downloading the entire feed, but I can't use ftp (due to that ****ing proxy!), and afaik there are no ftp servers anyway. How do I download everything in the feed without manually downloading every file individually?

Thanks for the help

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Stop Apps From Adding .desktop Entries
« on: December 13, 2004, 11:58:56 am »
All the files I want on the docs tab are located on my sd card, which is checked automatically. When I save a file using the text editor (actually any program), it creates a .desktop file in /root/Documents/text/plain (it creates the text/plain (or whatever) dir as well), and consequently I end up with two entries in the doctab for the same file. One of which is usually called something like: /mnt/card/Documents/blahdeblah/etc/stuff.txt, the other just stuff.txt.

Any suggestions?

Also, does anyone know when we are likely to get that doctab overhaul?
Is it going to be a 'files' tab (like the 6000 sharp rom has, i think (they arent downgrading to a doctab if they run oz are they?))

Thanks
Simon

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Power Management
« on: December 13, 2004, 11:52:01 am »
The battery % rarely changes, and when it does it is in leaps and bounds. This is most annoying when the battery is low- it will suddenly go from 30% down to 3% and start getting annoyed with me.
'apm' always displays the same % as the status bar app.
Is there some way I can force an update, or make it update more often?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Citytime: All Times Are The Same?!?
« on: December 13, 2004, 11:47:44 am »
In the opie citytime app on 3.5.1 and 3.5.2, ALL cities are on the same time.
Anyone know of a fix for this?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Opie Background Images
« on: December 08, 2004, 04:35:05 pm »
Hi,
I am trying to make my Z look a bit nicer.
I am running OZ 3.5.2 Opie 1.2 on SL-5500 (portrait).
All the images I want to use are in landscape. I want it to look nice in landscape and portrait mode.

The problem is that Opie resizes and rescales the image to 240x320. This distorts the image badly. I dont mind rotating the image by 90, but can I get OZ to do this for me? I also want it to use the image the same way up when in landscape mode, so that the image does not tile sideways. Another (possibly better) option could be to make the image 427(to keep the aspect)x320 and prevent opie from resizing it. This way 2 thirds of it will be visible in portrait, but it will be the full width of the screen when in landscape.

Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

Thanks

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Ipkg Cannot Find Local Ipks
« on: December 07, 2004, 11:48:19 am »
Having upgraded to 3.5.2 I find that whilst the graphical ipkg manager has a specific option for installing local ipks, it cant actually find them. It can't in console mode either. I get:
Cannot find package [packagename].
Check the spelling or run 'ipkg update'
An error ocurred, return value: 4.

Why can't it find the package??? ITS RIGHT THERE!!! It doesn't work if I use ./[package] or the full path either.

EDIT: So far it hasn't found anything (I dont currently use the feeds directly from the z (flaming proxy server ))

I still have not managed to get ipkg-link to link my installed programs on mmcda2, so I am getting quite annoyed.

Thanks in advance
Simon

OpenZaurus/Opie/Qtopia / Ipkg-link, Add Places To Search
« on: December 05, 2004, 10:41:00 am »
Hi,
I used to have /dev/mmcda2 (ext2) mounted on /mnt/card and mmcda1 (fat) mounted on /mnt/fat, but I use other sd cards regularly (with only one big fat partition) and it has got a bit annoying having to manually edit /etc/sdcontrol and mount/unmount all partitions.

I now have mmcda1 mounted on /mnt/card and mmcda2 mounted manually on /mnt/sd. Unfortunately, despite adding 'dest sd /mnt/sd' (yes i changed the name of /mnt/card) to /etc/ipkg.conf, ipkg-link cannot find any packages installed on /mnt/sd. (even if I have told it to mount /mnt/sd and its getting the packages list of there).

I cannot find any other ipkg related config files- where do I tell ipkg-link about /mnt/sd?

Thanks

5x00 Hardware / Z Case- What Are You Using?
« on: December 05, 2004, 10:30:36 am »
I have seen a case on ebay, but it doesn't look very good (and it sure is expensive!). Other than that I haven't seen anything that mentions the Z, and nothing else that looks remotely suitable.

What do you keep, carry and/or use their Z in?
Where can I get one?

Thanks

5x00 Hardware / Accessories For Screw Hole On The Back?
« on: December 05, 2004, 10:24:46 am »
Hi,
Seeing as it is there, and the manual says that it's use is yet to be decided, has anyone seen or heard of, or got, or made any accessories that use the screw hole on the back of the SL-5500?

Thanks

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Opie Or GPE?
« on: November 30, 2004, 04:03:03 pm »
Seeing as OZ 3.5.2 will be released very soon and I'll be upgrading anyway, what do people prefer?
Interested in the pros/cons and your experiences of each.
Prefferably SL-5500, but feedback on other models may be useful too.

Thanks

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Exit Opie-console Without Using The Stylus?
« on: November 29, 2004, 11:17:15 am »
How do I close the console without tapping the x in the top corner?

Since the cancel button is esc (for things like vi) I can't use that.
I used to type 'exit', but due to the major changes in the console (new features!) that doesn't work anymore.
There is no exit option in the menu at the top.

Thanks
Simon
