OpenBSD / Should Openbsd Link To This Forum On The Z Page?

I could be wrong but I don't think anyone has bricked their device permanently... TRISoft - can you confirm that all brickings have been reversible?

OpenBSD / Status Of Sd/sdio Support?
« on: August 30, 2005, 11:40:19 am »
One of the projects listed on the zaurus page is SD/SDIO support. Anyone know what the status of that project is? One of these days I'll poke around CVS.

Well, it looks like you're right. That doesn't stop a fool from trying. =)

Barry,

If the arm list wasn't growing cobwebs I would agree

It's too bad the web became so very non-SMTP like. That said, I see no reason that forum software couldn't have a "mailing list mode" for those who prefer an SMTP based interface.

I grew up on BBS systems. Even the most rudimentary systems without fancy terminal emulation had menu systems and other interactive elements. Most actually let you use the arrow keys to move things arround. Those were some of the most stimulating days of my life (in a social and technical context). So, I think there's a call for centralized interfaces sometimes... but I certainly agree that SMTP is lower maintenance!

Wow, that's a pretty good ship time!

I told them about the prices on pricejapan, conics, etc. Another sales rep took over and offered the lower price.

TIP: I got the last one they had in stock so it might be a couple of weeks until they restock.

I just ordered a C3100 from Dynamism.com. They list the price at $899, but I got them to come down to $729 + $10 shipping. I should have it by Friday.

Dynamism is more expensive than pricejapan, conics, etc. but if you can bargain them down, the reduced ship time and better warranty responsiveness is worth it for US customers (they are based on Chicago and ship from Chicago, not Japan).

Anyways, I plan on doing the "dual boot" thing with the base Rom and OpenBSD. offroadgeek was kind enough to give us an OpenBSD forum, and it's been quite active with folks who are loving OpenBSD on their zaurus! There are kinks to work out but it seems pretty useful and is apparently easy to dual boot.

I love Cacko and will probably try that out as a replacement for the stock rom when it's released. Never tried pdaXrom.

Oh, I just wanted to add that OpenBSD has a million networking tools (many network security related) available. Also, the zaurus port is an official project, and thus has the backing of the OpenBSD project, so it's likely to be supported until the main developers become disenchanted of the zaurus platform (like that would ever happen).

Marc, that sounds great. A big challenge in OSS is always finding people willing to maintain accurate and timely information!

Perhaps the OpenBSD/zaurus maintainers will take the best info from this forum, from various sites on the internet, and conflate it into some kind of uber guide.

Or, you guys could write it.

If you chose No or Maybe, please elaborate or post a suggestion. I'm pretty sure that the openbsd.org/zaurus.html page linking to this forum would be OK with the webmasters of oesf.org. Offroadgeek - any comments?

OpenBSD / Small Anoyances With Bsd 3.8 Beta 0 On Sl-3000
« on: August 28, 2005, 04:23:10 pm »
There's been discussion about this on the arm list. The thread is archived here:
http://archive.openbsd.nu/?ml=openbsd-arm&...&m=1221131&list

Quote from the last msg posted:

"The problem appears to be triggered by memory-mapping the framebuffer and accessing it. This means that both X11 and ztsscale(8) trigger it. Merely mmap()'ing the framebuffer doesn't trigger it, so something's probably going wrong in a page fault handler somewhere.

I've produced a minimalistic testcase from ztsscale code; see attachment. If I can't figure out what's going wrong myself I'll file a formal bug report about this.

Wouter"

Welcome visitors from the arm mailing list. I think you'll find oesf.org to be a great resource for your zaurus needs, as it has been for mine. (That is, if you're not already a member!)

Enjoy, and feel free to start a topic on any OpenBSD issue that's itching you at the moment.

OpenBSD / Gprs + Openbsd
« on: August 23, 2005, 01:30:04 am »
Thanks - very good point about the USB cable.

Albert - how long would it take someone with only a passing knowledge of C or C++ to port the rest of that stack?

On the arm list, a couple of people said that OpenBSD probably wouldn't be able to use a CF card to do bluetooth GPRS with a bluetooth phone.

Here's the most interesting response I got:

"AFAIK, looking into src/sys/netbt, it seems that BT support in OBSD
is far from complete. Only HCI commands/events are supported, L2CAP and
RFCOMM is not implemented. The particular driver support (BCSP in the
case of Socket Communications (rev G) bluetooth card) wouldn't really
matter until network protocol stack is completed."
-Albert Rybalkin

Seems like even a bluetooth USB dongle would be pointless. Any ideas? I used to use GPRS with my T610 phone with my C860 (cacko rom) and it was pretty useful. I'm trying to figure out if I can duplicate the experience somehow on a C3100 running OpenBSD.

For ports, eg kismet, about an hour, though I'll usually download the sources
and mass compile/install packages overnight on a usb hdd.  There are prebuild
packages on openbsd website[0], do use test them for release.

How about cross compiling ports on your desktop?
