X/Qt / Debian with Xqt
« on: January 26, 2006, 01:36:00 pm »
Hi Peter,

I'm afraid that my help is going to be quite limited, as for a few months I don't use anymore Debian with Xqt but have changed to pdaXrom. More unstable but quicker.
What I can say about "  .xinitrc  " is that I used the one created when installing Xqt. I made just a couple of changes that are explained in the page that I made to show some items related with Debian/Xqt.
I am sure that I commented "  blackbox  " but also I am sure that I didn't try to launch icewm from this file. If you think in the process, the only interest of your "  .xinitrc  " file is to be able to launch Xqt with just one console where you can write. And the first thing that you do in the console is to call "  chroot  ", so your original home is lost.
What you want is to launch a window manager from Debian, so, after chroot.
Try to make your "  .xinitrc  " just small enough to launch the X's from Xqt and have a console. The jump to Debian is done afterwards from this console.

Good luck!!

Hello all,

I think I have a problem with X/Qt. I installed all as smuelas suggested, but the Start X button just starts and finishes without starting rxvt. Has anyone some tips?

Yours, Peter

/etc is kept on root partition coz it doesn`t consume so much space!
to make it clear:every thing that is consider configuration should be on the root partition.

Thanks Urielka for those scripts.
Nevertheless I will ask you to make them a little bit clearer for me.
I have tried the second one and it seems to run without any negative message, BUT, no chage is perceived. I run it after "login" and before launching the X's. Is that O.K.? When I look at the free memory after launching KDE, I see that I've used almost 60 Mb. or RAM, so the SWAP is needed.
Regarding the first script, I've tried it to launch an application, "korganizer". So I have changed
the name of the program. Afterwards I receive a message of not having the close bracket at line 93. I have installed PERL to run it. I find also a problem with "ldd", but I have used the one that I have in Debian, and it seems to run.
The result is the same as with the second script: the application runs but with no differences with the usual way of launching it.
Your figures are so excellent that I'm sure I'm not doing things o.k.
Any help?

is there a simple way to start kde... something like "startkde" (which doen't start x) and not like "startkde --replace" (which leaves a lot o stuff running in the backgrounfd from the previous wm --- in ice the panel and rox are both going, for example)

IS there anything new since the thread on kde 3.4?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=109171\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I link startkde to .xinitrc and run startx.
It can be necesary to do a "ldconfig" before and also stablish the swapon  as kde uses more ram.
Anyway, my feeling is that kde is a little bit "too much" for my 6000 althought for some uses it is o.k.

I failed to install KDE in a 128M SD card - not enough space!
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=108832\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Sorry for the delay in answering.
I have installed the packages for kdebase, kdepim and the libaries. So the whole KDE. I installed at the same time "octave" and "vim" and some other minors. I looked at space in SD before and after and it was around 250-300 Mb.
It runs very well althought some applications (konqueror, kate...), takes its time. In fact, konqueror no more than mozilla; around 45 sc. on the 6000 at 400 Mh. Once on the screen, it seems to me a little bit quicker.
My opinion is that it should be installed on SD. It takes a little while to install but afterwards everything is o.k.
Pgas, I don't recommend to launch the X's in the usual way and the run "startkde". I have tried as a variant but there is a mixture of windows from openbox or icewm and the K's.
I suggest for those using KDE and also Matchbox or Rox or any other to write a few short scripts to launch one or the   other. Someting like:

rm .xinitrc
ln -s /usr/bin/mbsession .xinitrc
startx

and call it "mbstart". Then: "chmod +x mbstart" and  "ln -s mbstart /usr/bin/mbstart"  You see the idea....
The same for "kdestart" and any other wanted.
I used "ksnapshot" to obtain the simple jpg attached.

Sash has just finished building the latest version of pdaXrom - find it at http://www.pdaxrom.org/index.php?showid=8&menuid=11

This post will be updated ASAP with the changelog and new stuff added.

Just tested it in my SL-6000 and everything is fine.
In fact, I haven't found any difference with the previous, not being the nice messages at boot time.
The problem with "suspend" on CF (microdrive) continues. As I have my own "xmodmaprc" and copy itto /etc/X11/kb/ , nothing new with the keyboard.
All in all, it works very well, modifying some details.

line at the end of your script. Right now I have changed --rbind to just --bind and that seems to work.

I read again the man page of mount, I must have read it too quickly the first time:

Quote
This call attaches only (part of) a  single  filesystem,  not  possible
submounts.  The entire file hierarchy including submounts is attached a
       second place using
              mount --rbind olddir newdir

So rbind does the what you see, and bind should be used and rbind does not seems
to work as expected on the 860.

Thanks for beeing patient , I'll try to update the scripts
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=108312\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

After a few days of testing different possibilities for mounting/unmounting Debian on pdaxrom, and for the specific problems created on the SL-6000, it is now clear the picture: Everything runs perfectly well if using an SD card. The problems arise with the microdrive that I have on the CF slot. And those are, as you suspected, the mounting/unmounting of /mnt/cf when suspending and resuming.
This is the "only" problem that I've found on the 6000. In a normal session, without using Suspend, everything works fine.
Now, what I do is to unmount /mnt/cf before suspending. For "Suspend" I don't need to click the button. I just use the ON/OFF key on the 6000, as in the original ROM. Another way is to include the unmounting of /mnt/cf on the Suspend icon, and this simplifies the process.
Nevertheless, there is still a "remaining" problem, referring to your scripts for Debian. And it is the fact that usually "stopdebian.sh" is not able to finish the whole process. More specifically, the "tmp" and "dev" mounted, produce a message of "/mnt/cf busy" and the final unmounting of /mnt/cf is impossible, what makes the solution above mentioned, useless.
Would it be any way of forcing unmounting of those two and include them in "stopdebian.sh"??

I've tried and everything begins very well, but after one or two minutes, not always in the same place, (mplayer) suddenly everything hangs.
try to add "-nortc" to the mplayer options
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=107723\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Bingo! once more Pgas. It runs wonderufly now... :-)
About the problem with Suspend in the 6000, there is a bug with the microdrive on /mnt/cf, as you know very well. My idea was to try with a different ROM, but I'm so pleased with other aspects of pdaXrom that I've decided to try to solve the minor problems. And, really, pdaXrom + Debian (your way) is so simple and runs so well, that I will not change it if everything continues as it is.
I've  written a short script and changed the instruction for the icon "suspend" as to exec this script. It seems to work o.k., at least in the short time. I will verify this evening and tomorrow I'll have a more clear idea.
The other points that I will be happy to  solve  is the possibility of having a key doing "Num_Lock". Up to now, the 6000 do not seem to react at this. I've had implemented all the other ascii extended characters that I need without problem, including Caps_Lock. But Num_Lock don't seem to react.
Also, having the wheel on the mouse would be a nice thing. I use it on some Java apps.
About the address for installing a complete Debian, it is not so. The guy only "authomatizes" the launching of Pocketworkstation, but running on Xvnc. Thanks aniway for your information.
Finally, Java is running very well from inside Debian, and a final question: do you know if it is possible to have several workspaces using Matchbox?
Thanks for all, and I will be only too happy to help anyone if needed.

I've just bought one. Thanks a lot Pgas. (I must be telling you "thanks" all the time as your help is really impressive... ) I will try your advice for Mplayer as soon as I come home. Regarding the issue with "suspend", I've confirmed your opinion: the HD is unmounted. The first time I used pdaXrom I flashed the kernel from Guylhelm, and there were not this problem. I'll try once more. Perhaps the best combination for the 6000 is this kernel + pdaXrom + Debian (your style). If everything runs smoothly, I will maintain you informed.

Are you able to use mplayer for a whole film on the 6000?
If so, wich package are you using of mplayer?
I've tried and everything begins very well, but after one or two minutes, not always in the same place, suddenly everything hangs.
Have you had the same issue sometime?
Thanks

Got an Iriver cable, plugged the USB mouse in and it's wonderful but I have no wheel at all. I looked for all the usual ways of making the wheel work on a PC X installation but came up blank. I assume I have to enable buttons 4 and 5 somewhere.

I could also do with slowing the mouse down, it moves too fast for me.

Any pointers please.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=105451\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Could you, please, give the complete specification or name of the Iriver cable?
Does it works with the SL6000?
Thanks

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=106623\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thanks, but...

How do I use it?
Is it available from the cmd line, outside of X ?

Any docs for the "Overcloc applet" in the system tools tab? It has three number entries, if I change these, will it stay how I set it permanently?

I'd really like to do this outside of X so I can speed up MAME.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=106627\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Just click on the icon for overclocking. Then on the middle column, first row, change number 1 to number 2 or 3 (I think this is a maxi). The processes speed up in the same percentage as you increase the numbers; so, for 530 around 30%. This is not a lot and I don't know if the Xscale is suffering... Finally, I don't use it.

This is the original goal of pocketworkstation.
If you use the installation describe on the site, it stops qtopia and starts an xserver over a virtual  frame buffer. the "daemon" installed forwarded commands from the chrooted environement to the default qtopia environnement.

There is some info out there explaining how someone runs debian only on his c3000.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=107574\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I have used the original pocketworkstation sometime. It is not the same...

When you say "out there" do you mean in the pocketworkstation site?
