So....

I ended up doing everything again - Nand restore, dynamism back up to English, 1.11JP rom update, Cacko 3kb1, Sync with notebook for pims (no restoring back ups for me!) - I don't have one on a fat16 card, then Reinstalled all my applications back, less the x/qt debian - all performed on a fat16(brand spanking new 512 CF Card).

By the way xp reads the card as FAT. So now I have 1 Gig & 512 CF Cards. Plus 1 gig & 512 SD Cards. Must format the ones that got me in trouble...

Good luck to all that have to go through this process. It might be scarry and frustrating but in the end....

After about a week of playing with x/qt debian, I finally got it to work! However, I was unable to install packages using apt-get install. I would get some error messages that I do not understand, yet...

So I decided to enter the ok/on menu and step 3, then 1,. I had been performing these steps for a week when debian did not work so that I could restart from scratch.

Then it happened HDD1 ERROR! So I followed pelon's directions (see above) to restore a nand back up, less the kernel update.

My z came back in japanese, I restored a back up from Dynamism - when my unit was first shipped to me, then I flashed to the new rom 1.11JP, then flashed again with cacko 3kb1. Everything went well, then when I did step 3, then 1, like the instructions say to do - error messagesl. My Z just hung there doing nothing.

So I tried again the whole process - but no cigar. Same deal - cacko would install but as soon as I tried to do step 3, then 1, error messages.

So I tried again, this time without cacko, everything went well, then when I tried to install packages. I would get an error message. I could not install anything.

I finally remembered someone warning that the sd/cf cards must be fat16, and I remember formating them to fat32 with windows xp not too long ago. Aha... this is what started the problem... Using a fat32 cr card / cacko back up on my c3000! beware!.......

1) Do a nand back up, save it on your computer, then save to a disk-just in case, before you start to flash with different roms and attempt to install x/qt Debian. (for a newbie such as myself at least.

2)Practice getting into the service menu, boot menu, ok/on menu, it is help full to be able to perform these tasks when your z will not start.

3) Do not mix back ups from sharp rom with cacko rom - I did this by accident.

4) CF / Sd Cards mus be formatted as fat 16 - they show up as fat on xp computer. Xp computer formats as fat32 and this is not good for installing packages, much less for restoring nand - and flashing.

5)Read directions 3 times and then some, many problems can be avoided by just reading someone else's directions and understanding the steps that need to be taken.
Be patient and with a little luck - a newbie can bring their z back to life (I did - and I don't know much about the commands and or what really happens when I start to change directories and unpack files for debian to work)

So here is what I did wrong, hope fully someone else will not have to go through it,
or learn from my mistakes.......

Ok, here is some info on how to get the above process to run smoothly.

I learned the hard way, had to nand restore 4 times.

Finally got it working just the way I want it, less Xqt/Debian. This monster got me in trouble, but I am past my fears and will try it again this weekend.

So here are some-pointers, someone feel free to jump in if I am not correct on some of these things. These are the things I learned the hard way...

Factory reset has worked for me.

It would help if you had a back up to retore your programs and pims.

Thanks for that link Ben.

It sounds like this guy had the same problem I had, but then he reset the unit again ending up with hdd3 error. I have HDD1 error!!

So when I reflash with cacko 3kb1, I get:

success on everything 100%
then

hdd ro file system
now formating
now extracting

then

success
finished!

rebooting...
then lots of error messages enging with:
HDD1 ERROR!! Unable to open LED device

Anybody else have any ideas?

Could some one please point me to the right web-page for bringing my zaurus back to life?

I updated to the new Japanese rom, flashed with cacko 3kb1. Running fine for several weeks. Tried pocketworkstation, had problems for about a week. I was finally able to install it but could not update or install packages.

So, I decided to reflash and start fresh with the debian setup. Everything went fine but when I tried to restore a back up that had my x/qt setup right, it just stayed at restoring 100%.

So I reboot it and then I had the HDD1 Error!!. So I tried to reflash with cacko 3kb1 again but no cigar, still have the HDD! ERROR!!

I bought this unit from Dynamism, I was never able to get into the service menu to do a nanback up. Should I get this Nanback up from them?

Is it available anywhere else on line? I have the Dynamism back up from when the unit first shipped.

Thanks for taking the time. This machine is awesome but my "manos de fierro" broke it!

Ok, finally figured it out.

got debian working with x/qt per meanie's site.

Have a few issues with debian, installing firefox and thunderbird.
Will remove and reinstall again.

Ok, I am going to try to install Debian without the debian scripts.

Could some one help me with this:

In addition, I modified .xinitrc and replaced the line:
rxvt &    

with the following:
if [ -f $HOME/.xstart ]; then

XAPP=`cat $HOME/.xstart`
`$XAPP`&
rm $HOME/.xstart

else

rxvt &

fi

When I try to modify this file, I get a warning message read only. So I do :! to over-ride, then I press enter, but the file is still not saved.

So according to the instructions, I can replace
xqt-startup-scripts [xqt-startup-scripts_0.0.3_all.ipk]

with:
xqt-debian-scripts_0.2_arm.ipk

Here is my problem:
When I replace with debian scripts my x window or debian window does not display the rxvt window. If I leave the xqt scripts and add debian scripts on top of that it seems to work.

However, I have tried numerous installations trying to get debian to work.

I either just get error messages and pocketworkstation does not launch.

Or my latest one, I launches and I end up with a blue screen missing the rxvt window.

Any pointers are greatly appreciated.
I am running cacko 3kb1, sudo does not want to work, my on-off switch stops working if I install so I have tried:
#cd /hdd3/debroot
#su -
#xlauncher debian

Meanie or anyone else out there that can help...

I followed Meanie's instructions by installing X/QT here:

after I did this:
# cd /opt/QtPalmtop/bin
# su
# ln -s Xqt X
# ln -s rxvt xterm

I skipped this:
add the following to /home/zaurus/.xinitrc
xmodmap -e "keycode 69 = slash comma"
xmodmap -e "keycode 70 = period question"
   

Hint: you can use the command line program xev from within X to determine the keycode of different keys on the SL-C3000 keyboard and add the mapping with xmodmap like I did, or alternatively, you can create a .xmodmaprc file to customize your keymaps instead.

You might also want to add the following to your .profile file:
export DISPLAY=:0.0    

In addition, I modified .xinitrc and replaced the line:
rxvt &    

with the following:
if [ -f $HOME/.xstart ]; then

XAPP=`cat $HOME/.xstart`
`$XAPP`&
rm $HOME/.xstart

else

rxvt &

fi
   

Then I replaced the content of /home/QtPalmtop/bin/startx-wrapper with the following:

becasuse of this:
Note: You can also install [xqt-debian-scripts_0.2_arm.ipk] instead of xqt-startup-scripts [xqt-startup-scripts_0.0.3_all.ipk] which will give you an even more enhanced .xinitrc and startx-wrapper and you don't need to do the above modifications manually. (It will also give you an additional Debian icon which you can delete if you don't intend to install Debian)
