I assume you did the hard reset by pressing the lowest button? If so, hmmm ... JTAG.

I read somewhere about shorting pin 1-2 to revive the unit.

Can you confirm the comm settings? There are two sets of settings to use, one for the siemens bootloader and the other for the bootloader used by >= 0.9.0.

Just awhile should do it. You can also preset the reset button while the battery is unplugged. Then plug back the battery. Close cover. Screw in at least two screws to hold the cover as there are at least 1 or 2 micro switches detecting the cover status.

Plug in AC power. plug in serial cable to SL4 and PC serial port. Start HT. Set to 115,8N1, XON/XOFF. Power up. HT should at least show something.

Just being curious - why do you need a replacement SL4? Aren't hey all the same?

Also, do you know if Budiffy has more units for sale?

Well, somehow Tom's SL4 died ... hence the replacement.

good news: I managed to flash blupdater.img, as stated in the previos post
bad news: my simpad wont light the green light, and wont startup.

I guess i killed it.

odd as I followed the steps suggested.

for the record , everything I did is posted here.

Don't fear ... yet!  ... open up the back casing. There is one screw *hidden* behind the QC tested sticker on the top right corner. The battery is velcroed to the back cover at the bottom. Remove the battery cable and this should hard reset the unit.

Close back the cover and retry the flashing routine.

EDIT: btw, I cannot seem to find your step where you interrupt the boot sequence and drop to "boot> " in order to flash in the new image (this is not referring to blupdater.img but referring to simpad-rootfs.jffs2). Can you verify?

After serloading the handhelds.org bootloader, you can flash in the 0.9.x images with your CF instead of using serial cable again.

*copied from bkaiser at opensimpad forum*
1. run a Flash Erase
2. serload blupdater.img
3. if you got a CF-Card, simply format it as vfat (for Windows FAT)
4. Place the jffs2-Image in the root-directoy of the card
5. rename the jffs2-File to simpad-rootfs.jffs2
6. insert the (CF) card into your simpad
7. Power on and wait

The above steps you have taken leads you to step 2.

Copy the image to your CF card that was formatted in FAT(or FAT16, NOT FAT32).

For step 7, either power on or reset (or hard reset). Only reset when you are absolutely sure that you have successfully flashed in your new bootloader. Otherwise you are boot! (dun mind me the pun!)

Upon resetting, you need your HyperTerminal to connect with a new settings 115200 8N1, *XON/OFF*

You should see the terminal show the boot up sequence of the new bootloader. Once it starts (which is very quick!), press esc at HT and it should drop to prompt "boot> "

If you do not get to the boot prompt, try again with the reset. If it still shows the earlier menu options, it means you did not manage to flash in the correct bootloader and may still have the Siemens bootloader. This is not right, retry "serload blupdater.img" at step 2. above again. Make sure you set back your HT settings to 38400,8N1, hardware (not sure if XON/OFF works here). The good news is that you have not bricked your SL4 yet!

ok, once you reach the "boot> " prompt, type the following at the HT:

boot> copy hda1:/simpad-rootfs.jffs2 root

This assumes you did the earlier steps of renaming your image file to simpad-rootfs.jffs2 and have it at the root of a FAT(16) CF card in the SL4 when resetting.

This should start the flashing sequence and after its done, you should reboot and get the new image booting up to a touchscreen calibration sequence.

If you feel like reverting to Siemens image again , reset your SL4 with HT connected as above, and press ESC to drop to " boot> ".

Type these at HT:

boot> set override=1
boot> pflash 0 40000 1
boot> copy hda1:/simpadXX.rom bootldr

assuming you have the *old* SL4 rom copied to your CF card.

if you are using SL4, it would be simpadSL.rom, if its a CL or sinus pad or something (32MB), it would be simpadCL.rom.

Hope this helps.

serload (for windows)
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/simpad/...ad.zip?download

2.5.3 bootloader
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/simpad/...tar.gz?download

both links found in http://opensimpad.org/downloads.0.html

Also, for step 8, if you are using windows, do *NOT* choose FAT32. Choose FAT while formating.

Thank you for the replies.

I wonder, how do some sellers claim to sell NEW or almost new Simpads?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=87387\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I got one of these new SIMpads from eBay. It is indeed *new*. No tricks or anything. Its prob old stock. The only thing old about it was the external box, with a bit of scratches. The unit and complete accessories are all brand new.

Sounds too good to be true, but in this case, it is.

eBay is currently your best bet. And I think you just missed the latest flood of SL4s ...

googled and yahooed and searched handhald.org:

WHERE IS the bootloader 0.9.0-rc1 ?

hi niv, thought I'll list a few links so that you have everything in one place. And should I miss out something, maybe Albertr or others who are more familar in this can update:

For >= 0.9.0, you need:

1. Bootloader
http://opensimpad.org/bootldr-simpad/blupdater.img

2. Images
0.9.x 22-Jun-2005
http://devernay.free.fr/hacks/opensimpad/2...32.rootfs.jffs2

0.9.0rc1 (older images dated around Jan 08, 2005)
http://opensimpad.org/bootldr-simpad/opens....0rc1_gpe.jffs2
http://opensimpad.org/bootldr-simpad/opens...c1_gpeXXL.jffs2
http://opensimpad.org/bootldr-simpad/opens...0rc1_opie.jffs2
http://opensimpad.org/bootldr-simpad/opens...1_opieXXL.jffs2
http://opensimpad.org/bootldr-simpad/md5sums.txt

See also

Again, note that this would replace the default bootloader and blupdater.img is *NOT* compatible with the siemens images. You will need to restore SL4.rom later if you want to reflash back to siemens images.

Hope this helps.

For flashing the 0.8 images, you need to erase the flash first. But the boot loader you show on top is an older one. It should have an option to erase FLASH *and* another option to erase registry etc. For flashing in 0.8 images, you *need* to erase flash as the remaining bits may/will corrupt the new image.

EDIT: And as Albertr mentioned, 0.8 is ancient (although I got it installed recently as well, only to reflash with 0.9.1RC or was it 0.9RC? later), so you might want to try at least >= 0.9 or do your own build.

For me, I haven't got linux installed, so no personal build.

btw, niv, I assume you are trying to flash your SL4 with a opensimpad image ya?

For the 0.8.1 images found on opensimpad, you need to do a "serload ###.bin" and when the cmd prompt ask you to reset, THEN you do a reset. That should cause the upload/flashing to commence. This assumes you have done the "serload loader_bl.alt" and "serload loader_bl" sequence already.

If you are using anything >= 0.9, you need to download a different bootloader which *will* replace the existing Siemens bootloader *AND* is not compatible with the wince images. With it, you can then flash in the new images either through serial or CF.

If you want to revert to wince image again, you will need to reload the older Siemens boot loader SL#.rom before you can reload the wince images.

I played with the new OpenSimpad.  Thanks for all the guys (and gals?) for working on this (even though it appears to be dead now).

As always I liked Linux/Opie feel.

My WiFi cards have been identified and I was online in now time.  I used konqueror.  I worked but on certain websites, like cnn.com (I understand this is a known bug) it crashed.  In addition, for some reason, konqueror was creating folders in / starting with the first letter of each website I visited and had temp files there.  So, my / looked terrible.

I was able to download programs from the feed and update some.

For the following reasons however, I decided (for now) to go back to Win.

1.  It is really hard to use the soft keyboard because the touchscreen is not completely accurate (even after playing with the config file and calibrating it multiple times) at the bottom and the keboard is so tiny.  Without a reliable way for input, it is hard to use Simpad.

2.  The CF card (through a PCMCIA adaptor) appeared to have been recognized (the applet flashed that an IDE drive was found); however, it was not mounted.  I could not find a solution.

3.  USB connection to the PC does not work (I found no solution).  In Win I was able to connect through USB.

4.  Konqueror problems that I described above.

I am not a dev. so I can't help but wait for somebody to fix this.  Until then I am using Win

Hi kurochka,

How did you get windows to recognize SL4 through USB? I've yet to find a working simpad.inf file for it. I am using WindowsXP.

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=86167\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Install the driver for Windows XP to connect to Simpad (attached below).  You have to make sure the Windows installs this driver (disregard all the suggestions to connect online, etc.)
You must have ActiveSync installed (and choose connect to PDA through USB)
Choose at the Control Panel / PC Connections of the Simpad "USB" (not serial). Connect Simpad to the computer with the USB cable.
Then soft reset (Start - Programs - Tools - Software Reset).

If there is still no connection, reset Simpad with a stylus on the back of Simpad.
