General Discussion / Postong from my Z...

Seems you need to work on your Zaurus keyboard/writing/screen key tapping skills a bit...

And your shift key seems to be broken.

General Discussion / Run the battery dead, what happens?
« on: June 20, 2004, 02:10:48 pm »
On the 5500 the memory will be wiped, and it will be back in the default state (not factory new, if you\'ve changed ROMs, it will still have that ROM), because the memory is different from the flash memory used in later Zauri. (I could be wrong on this -- I\'m a 5600 owner).

On the 5600, 6000, Cxx0, there will be no harm done, if this happens once or twice. All your information should still be there.

Assuming it\'s a 5600, as in your sig... Nothing really bad. Supposedly if you run it down to completly no power a lot (like every single charge/discharge cycle), it can cause the battery to mess up, but you can buy another.

So to sum it up... Nothing really bad.

Accessories / Perfect Stylus

The Tungsten T3 stylus is by far the best stylus for the Z. Fits 100% perfectly in my 5600.

Mac Issues / ANN: ZMacSync-1.0a3 available
« on: June 15, 2004, 01:48:21 am »
ZMacSync does not use SMB. It only uses SSH.

The SMB problem might be resolved by trying \"root\" as the user and no password. Also if you have set a security passcode in the Security app, try that as the password.

1.0a3 version of ZMacSync only copies (not syncs) the Stickies (to Text Editor notes) and the Address Book (to Address Book, duh). Also, I\'m not sure, but does Cacko use the DTM format for the PIM database? Because ZMacSync only works with the DTM. (I don\'t know since I have a 5600). And if it does, you did install the zdbat ipk included with ZMacSync?

Cxx0 General discussions / New C860! Flashing options?
« on: June 14, 2004, 12:29:05 am »
Yes, definatly get yourself a Compact Flash card first. And maybe a CF reader for your desktop/laptop too, incase something goes wrong while flashing and you need to get a different ROM.

*shrug* I don\'t think you can. Since the tab structure is tied to the Menu.

Site Suggestions, Requests, and Updates / possible new zug forum
« on: June 11, 2004, 01:57:25 am »
My humble opinion is that the current forum is perfect. For me, anyways. I don\'t mind a few small \"quirks\" with stuff like searching and new post notifications, and I don\'t have any major problems. Although I do NOT like IPB for a small reason -] it\'s either just a trial, or it costs money, which sort of goes against my idea of software (excluding OSX [great OS, IMHO, once you setup it so you can drop onto root ;-) ], there is NO non-free piece of software I own OR use).

But hey, it\'s just my opinion...

How many people can quickly and easily get out a palm mode device and check a contacts details on it without using two hands ?
I\'d guess not many.

1. Pull 5x00/6000 out of pocket/case (one hand).
2. Press \"Cancel\" to turn on.
3. Press the Address Book button to start Address Book.
4. Use directional pad to scroll up/down in contact list. Left/right changes the alphabetical tab your\'re viewing.
5. Press middle Zaurus button to open details.
6. Read details and press Cancel twice, then hold it for two seconds to suspend Zaurus.
7. Replace Zaurus in pocket/case with one hand.

Easy...

And my personal take is that the clamshells are very nice, but for more practical, moving around alot, doing things quickly, the 5x00/6000\'s are better. The clams are good if you wish to basically use it as a laptop replacement, but the 5x00/6000\'s are better for slightly more traditional PDA uses (PIM, E-mail, web browsing, PDF viewing, etc.)

General Discussion / Better to Leave Z Connected to AC Power?
« on: June 09, 2004, 01:33:38 pm »
My personal use is to use the Zaurus for a few days without charging (number of days depends on how much I actually use it), and when it\'s down around 10-25%, I plug it in overnight and then go back to using it. Might not be the best way to do it, but so far it\'s worked for me (and for some odd reason the battery seems to last for a longer time than it did when I first got my 5600...)

As said in the first post in this thread... Only the Stickies and Address are COPIED (not SYNCED) from the Mac TO the Zaurus.

I assume the other things will be synced/copied in future versions.

On another note, I cannot wait for a fully working version...

General Discussion / zaurus sl5600 ZOM Flashing

Hm, the zImage MIGHT have to be zImage.bin. It is for some updater.sh versions, but not for others.

Chances are this is the problem, and make sure you rename them PRECICLY. No extra extensions or anything.

initrd.bin
zImage.bin
updater.sh

From the \"However, after the select update on the Menu Configuration and there is nothing work.\" this sounds like it cannot find the files. So be sure about the names AND extensions, ok?

Are you sure you\'re using a 5600 ROM? Maybe trying to flash a C700/C750/Cx60 ROM?

If you have the right ROM type, try flashing it again. And when choosing \"Update\" you also need to specify where the ROM files are found (CF cards work best).

If that\'s all correct, try flashing it again. If it stil doesn\'t work, get a new copy of the ROM files (in case of corruption) and use a CF reader in a PC (or Mac) to copy the ROM files over. Try flashing again after that.

If none of that works, use a NAND backup (only for LAST resorts). But BEWARE. A NAND RESTORE CAN RENDER THE ZAURUS COMPLETLY USELESS. And I\'m not exactly sure of the process to restore a NAND image. But try the other things I suggested first, before even THINKING of using a NAND restore.

Check out the ZMacSync project for syncronization.

It\'s not full featured yet (it\'s in an alpha stage), but from what I\'ve seen/tested, it works very well. And it *should* work on the 6000 series. But I\'m not positive.
