General Discussion / Special Kernel V1.4 for 5600?

Know that I\'m a little behind in replying to this thread, but...

It\'s in Japanese, but the main links to the zImages are in English, and for your information, the B500 is the Japanese equivalent of the 5600 in English. I\'ve been using this for well over a week, with no problems. An interesting thing is that this does not have the Sharp splash screen on bootup, but it instead uses a more traditional Linux console screen (where you see all the boot messages). The kernel works perfectly with Zynergy 1.1, with very little in the way of instability (I\'ve had it lock up 3 times in just over a week, but haven\'t had it lock up in the last 5 days). So it\'s pretty good.

In fact, I would like nothing more than OpenZaurus to be the de-facto \"standard\" upgrade that everyone wants to install first thing after taking their Z out of the box.  That day is a ways off, though...

I think alot of Z users would like to throw OpenZaurus on their Z as soon as they find OZ. The problem is simply this: compatibility. It does not run exceedingly well on anything but the 5000 or 5500. With 3.3.6pre1, it does run on all of them, but still has issues, with both WLAN and with ipkg (speaking about the 5600, since thats what I have), and I believe it also has these problems with the other Zaurii too.

IMHO (being typed from a Zaurus...), the Zaurus falls under neither the PDA category nor the palmtop category.

Why? Well look at the \"original\" PDAs... Those old Palms. I\'ve got a Palm V somewhere in my house, of course it\'s mostly unused, but that was one of the original PDAs, 8MB memory, black/white screen, who knows how slow a processor. But it did what it was meant to, so it was used widely. That was a PDA. It was used to store adresses, phone numbers, calendars, and text. It couldn\'t browse the web, nor do much else.

And a palmtop? Well, IMHO, its something that has more or less the ability to run desktop software well. The Zaurus doesn\'t do this. It runs scaled down, speedy versions of desktop software, but is far more featureful than more straight PDAs, like then Sony Clie, and the Palms. But it\'s not a desktop.

So what is it? I can\'t really call it much other than the name it deserves. The Zaurus.

Mac Issues / ANN: ZMacSync-1.0a3 available

Well, I couldn\'t use Samba to transfer the IPKs, so I just downloaded them to the Z instead. But ZMacSync application (after installing the IPKs on the Zaurus) works like a charm over the wireless. I didn\'t try the Address Book sync (since I use my Zaurus, not my Mac as my address book currently, and don\'t want to have to restore a backup of them), but the iCal/Caldendar/Todo psudo-sync worked like a charm.

I didn\'t try it over the USB, but may sometime soon.

I look forward to working releases of ZMacSync, especially ones where it takes the Z data and puts it on the Mac.

5x00 Hardware / 5600 worth it? Or go with 5500?

I\'m happy with the 5600 I have, although the only thing I don\'t like is no really working OZ yet (but that\'s coming along).

On the battery life, I\'ve had it running on wireless for a while (Linksys WCF12), about... 30-40 minutes straight with only dropping down to about 75%. The battery life is definatly very nice. On the battery I have it set for the lowest light level, but not off (since the screen is hard to see in the complete dark, unless you\'re in a very well lit area).

On the processor, the Special Kernel v1.3 is very nice for changing that. You get the full CPU power plus a bit extra. It can be overclocked up to 471Mhz, which is more than my main desktop.

On the RAM, although you can\'t run with 64MB of pure RAM, the 32 is adequate, and if you need more, you can use a (slightly) slower swap file, but if you just use the browser and have one other application open, the RAM is fine (for my usage, anyways).

The price may be a problem, but I can\'t really suggest much to help you on that point, sorry.

Linux Issues / Can ANYone sync with the 5600?

I\'m working on a custom ROM, based on the Sharp one, with OPIE instead of QTopia. It\'ll probably be in at least a semi useful state in a week or two. It should be able to sync with Qtopia Desktop, so maybe hang on for a little while? I hope it works out. It\'ll probably have some big bugs in ot for a little while, but hopefully it\'ll work. (Yeah, I\'m a little hyper over it. Too much caffeine.)

Nope, that was RC-1 this is 3.3.5. It\'s differernt.

I\'m pretty sure this is RC1, it\'s definitely not a final release (note the *testing* directory).

Yeah, it\'s in testing, but RC1 was a while ago, and in a differently named and organized directory. The reason it is in testing, is, like the Linux kernel and some other projects, the numbering system tells if it is development/testing.

Ex. 3.x.0 If the second digit (x) is even, it is a stable version or a beta/development of a stable (ex. 2.4.23-pre1 would be a pre for a stable), but if it is odd, it is unstable or testing (3.3.5 is testing version). Like the Linux kernel, 2.5 is unstable, while 2.6 will be stable.

harbinger1080: I\'ve been thinking of maybe just using the Sharp one, and then customizing it, like startup screens, screensaver, background, theme, etc. That might work well.

Yeah, I have the correct files. The flash procedure is different, but I have tried four different ROMs (Sharp, theKompanyrom, Zynergy, and OZ) so I know it well, and could do it in my sleep

I did get it to work by naming zImage to zImage.bin and using the original Sharp updater.sh and it flashed, booted and configured packages, but when it got to the \"Tap anywhere to continue\" screen, either it froze, or the touch screen did not work. So, I\'m going to a different 5600 ROM. Speaking of that, any ideas on what the \"best\" 5600 ROM is?

Nope, that was RC-1 this is 3.3.5. It\'s differernt. Well, I\'m flashing this now to my 5600, so I\'ll see how it works (Yay, they got the poodle version up!)
EDIT: The yay was extremly premature. It doesn\'t work. Or at least I can\'t get it to. Anyone get it to work on the 5600?

You can backup your data, if you just want a backup (I\'m unsure of exatly how, but there are ways), or you can wait for a little while, and then switch to OpenZaurus, which will sync to Qtopia Desktop, but is not stable enough on the 5600 yet, to be really useful. It\'ll probably be stable enough within a couple months, maybe?

You cannot sync to anything but Qtopia Desktop on Linux. If you are using SL-5500 ROM 3.x or a SL-5600, then you cannot sync (under the Sharp/Sharp based ROMs) at all to Linux. OZ/Opie syncs to Qtopia Desktop, but still does not sync to Evolution or anything else (SL-5500 version is fairly stable, from what I hear, but the 5600 version is very unstable, and has big glitches, so far, from personal experience).

The SL-5600 CANNOT YET SYNC TO ANY LINUX PROGRAM. There are ways to access it over Samba, but no syncing, because Sharp changed the PIM data format. The same goes for SL-5500 3.x ROMs.

As a note, the 5600 has yet to be able to sync with Linux (under the Sharp ROM), although you can connect it. There is just no software, for Sharp based ROMs. When I tried a development OZ ROM, syncing did work, but there were major problems elsewhere, so i had to switch back to a Sharp based.

I feel left out... I have a 5600 and no 5600 version yet...  I\'ve tried 4 different versions of development Poodle OZ and none have worked well yet... Can\'t wait until there is a stable Poodle version... (OZ 3.4 anyone?)
