General Discussion / C860 Or C1000

aren't they both roughly 400Mhz?  Though I believe the 1000 has better overclocking potential and video performance.
I don't know exactly why, but the SL-C1000 is definitely faster than the SL-C860 -- more so than you'd expect from a 16MHz clock speed improvement .

Many people would sacrifice that spare pocket in their bag (or preferrably suit pocket #2) for the ability to have 40Gb+ of USB storage that they could access from their Zaurus (preferrably with a real file system ).

My cheap Archos Jukebox Studio ($50 used) works just fine as an external drive for my SL-C1000.  I don't like to use it for long periods of time, as the HD spins constantly in USB mode, so it really sucks up the batteries, but it'll be great for storing files I don't need to access often, but would like to have with me (as soon as I fill up the 4GB microdrive).

I haven't tested it, but I really doubt it uses any power from the Z.  I usually copy music to it from my notebook, and the Jukebox batteries go down very quickly while I'm copying files (compared to use as an .mp3 player), so I'm pretty sure it isn't getting any power from the USB connection.  It takes quite a bit of current to spin up a 2.5" HD -- probably more than 500 mA, which is all a USB device is allowed to draw.

It's USB 1.1, so it's kind of slow, but it was recognized by a stock Cacko 1.23 rom,  so no additional drivers were needed.  As a bonus, it's theoretically upgradable to 137GB, and runs the open source Rockbox firmware.  You can find used ones on ebay for about $70 if you want the 20GB version, or as little as $30 if you're ok with a 6GB version.

Did anyone manage to have the latest ipk?

As far as I know, [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=336]this[/url] is the latest ipk for the Sharp ROMs.  If you're running pdaXrom, there are newer packages, which use the newer map version, have nifty icons, and look a little nicer, but basically have the same functionality.  You might be able to get the pdaXrom version running under X/Qt, if you install all the proper libraries, but it'll definitely be slower that way.

General Discussion / Pdf Vector Maps Of Us States & Picsel Browser
« on: February 28, 2006, 09:42:37 am »
Have you looked at Roadmap?
It's not exactly what you're looking for, but might be close enough.

It's got detailed vector maps for all of the US, but not quite the detail you may be looking for (it's based on US Census Bureau maps, so it has streets and some major features (water, some parks), but misses a lot of other details).  On the plus side, you can search by street address or gps locations, it'll take GPS inputs, and it zooms much like what you're describing.  I live in Michigan, and can get a street level map of my neighborhood, or can zoom out to see the entire state.

The maps are a bit bigger than what you're describing though.  The zipfile for Michigan alone is about 30MB.

Hope this helps,

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Video Encoder Settings

I'm having the same problem as JerryAttrix that the audio is out of phase. Any suggestions? thks

It does seem to be an encoding issue.

I noticed the same thing myself, but only on one video I encoded using the instructions at: http://www.cs.unc.edu/~hensley/zaurus/encode.html.

Videos I downloaded from the web seem to work OK, as did another video I encoded using the exact same method (2nd track on the DVD worked OK, 1st track was off).

I fixed it by adjusting the audio delay by about 2.2 seconds.  The command line option is "-delay -2.2", so for that video, I use:
mplayer -vo bvdd -vm -delay -2.2 videoname.avi

I used the commands + and - during playback to find out the correct setting.  It may vary for you.

Hope this helps,

David

We've just launched a USB hard drive for the Zaurus:

Battery powered, so you can plug it in quite happily.

Cheers

I've also had good luck using HD based .mp3 players for external storage, as they tend to have their own power supplies.

My Archos Jukebox studio 20GB ($50 used) was a good bargain, as my SL-C1000 sees it as external storage.  They've been going for $70 on ebay if you don't mind retro design and the uncertainty of a used hard drive.  6-15GB models go for even less.

Deals and Great Z Buys / Gps For $35 + S&h

Geeks.com currently has two USB receivers for $39.00
Here's a link to the CF version:

Here's a link to the USB version:

Oops -- the USB version's on sale today (until Weds) for $34.00.  You can save an extra $1!

I bought the USB version last week, threw in a CAT5 crimp tool and a cheap USB mouse and paid $8 for the cheapest shipping option.  I used the coupon code DEALNEWS for 10% off non-sale items (thus the $35 in the topic title).

I live near Detroit.  I placed the order on Tuesday, and it arrived Friday or Saturday (I don't remember which.  I had no time to look at it until this morning).

I plugged the USB version into my SL-C1000 (running pdaXrom) this morning, fired up gpsd and verified the connection, started roadmap, (waited 10 minutes), (moved the antenna to the top of my bookshelf), and it found my current location, from inside my office building.  The console lists 10 satellites currently in view, and varies from a lock on 6 to none, but that's still pretty impressive for inside a building.  It's a lot better than the 1st gen handheld which was the last GPS device I used.  It took 10 minutes to find 1 satellite standing next to a window (I can almost see a window from where I'm sitting now), and I eventually had to move outdoors to get it to work.

The USB version I have has a 6 foot cable, and a magnetic base, so you could stick it to the top of the car, but the magnet isn't particularly strong, so I don't know whether I'd trust it at highway speeds.

I'll try it in the car later, and see how it tracks.

I know nothing about the CF version, except that it's about the same price.

I haven't tried flite support yet -- on the Sharp ROMs it only works once, then hangs.  I hope it works better in X.[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=115042\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Ok -- I couldn't wait until I got home.  I had to install flite here at work to see how it works.

It's great.  You click on something, and it tells you what you selected.  Now I can't wait for my USB GPS to show up so I can try to get that working too.

I'm very happy with pdaXrom so far (I've been running it for about 3 hours).

I just got a new C1000, and I'm trying out pdaXrom, so I'm kind of late to the party.

You need to have the map files installed.  I tried putting them in /root/share/roadmap (the Familiar instructions seemed to say to put them there), but it couldn't find them unless I started roadmap from the directory the maps were in.

I haven't tried flite support yet -- on the Sharp ROMs it only works once, then hangs.  I hope it works better in X.

btw -- when I invoke roadmap from the directory the maps were in, it started right up.  It looks nicer than the Sharp ROM version, but the functionality is about the same.

I was just looking at that too.  It appears to be a version for OpenZaurus.  I don't think it'll work under the Sharp ROMs.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / X Keys For Ce-rh1 Audio Remote
« on: January 18, 2006, 01:41:54 pm »
Quote
I've successfully gotten lineakd to compile and work on my C3K and I'd like it to work for the other clamshells as well. lineakd is basically a daemon which runs in X and listens for special keypresses. When a key is pressed it will run any command you want. I've gotten it to work very well on my C3K with my CE-RH2 audio remote controlling mpd via mpc. mpd is the music player daemon and mpc is a controller for it. (I've also added other mpd clients to OE but that's beside the point.)

I'm looking for a C7/8x0 owner with a CE-RH1 audio remote to get me the X keycodes for their remote. To do this easily you need another linux machine with X installed (remember that you can always use Knoppix on, say, a Windows computer to do this). Bring up your Zaurus and get into GPE. Run "xhost" on the command line with the IP of the other Linux computer with X (ex: xhost 192.168.0.45). Go to the other linux computer and open a terminal. Set DISPLAY to go to your zaurus (ex: export DISPLAY=192.168.0.42:0.0). Now start "xev". You should see a window pop up on your zaurus. Now press each of the keys on the remote and look for the "keycode XXX" entry in the output. Note the keycode and which key it is. Post the info back here or PM it to me and I'll add support for the CE-RH1 to lineakd. I'll even help you set it up if you like.
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Hmmmm... I couldn't get the keycodes from xev within x/Qt.  I just installed it today, though so maybe I'll figure it out later.

The keycodes from [a href=\"http://www.areanine.gr.jp/~nyano/cerh1pad.html]http://www.areanine.gr.jp/~nyano/cerh1pad.html[/url] seem to match with what I'm seeing in Keyhelper (under Cacko rom) though, so they're probably right.

Here's the list as best I can make it out:
Play/Pause = 201c
Stop = 201d
FW = 201e
RW = 201f
Vol + = 2020
Vol - = 2021

Hope this helps!

General Discussion / I Mounted A 2 Gig Sd Card!

That would make for a really "nice" C3100. 8GB CF to replace microdrive + 8GB CF in external slot + 4GB SD card in SD slot = 20GB total storage internally with no external drives attached to it.

just my 2¢

C1000/3x00 Hardware / What Headphone With Microphone For The Cxx00?

Update: there was a small error in the schematic. I took the resistors like they were in the rh2, but creative traced the resitors and switches a bit different: i.e. they took resistor 4 for Forward and resistor 5 for Rewind. the rh2 had this exactly swapped. so I just swapped the values of the resistors in the schematic so that they work properly.

Resistors of: Switch Forward and Switch Rewind are swapped and Switch Vol+ / Switch Vol- also are swapped... just look into the UPDATED schematics posted above. I've deleted the false one.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=100602\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
You can't do that.

I tried modifying the Zen micro remote as in your schematic (only using resistor values for the CE-RH1, since I have a C760), and was disappointed when FW, RW, and Vol - didn't work.

I took a closer look at the schematic, and saw why: all the resistor values on the switches depend on the previous values of all the resistors in line (that's why the values roughly double each time).  If you change the orders of the resistors, the total resistance value will be wrong, and the Zaurus won't know how to respond.  If you're lucky, it may work the way it was originally intended, but you'll most likely get an error and the remote will stop working.

Here's an example of why.  For the FW key, the switch completes the circuit at R4, which means it includes the values of R2 and R3.  If you use the values in the intended sequence, you get a resistance of (330 + 470+ 690) = 1490.  For RW, the switch completes the circuit at R5, which means it includes R2, R3 and R4, so if you press RW with the correct values you get (330 + 470 + 690 + 910) = 2400

If you swap R4 and R5, then for the the FW keypress you get a value of (330 + 470+ 910) = 1710, and for RW you still get (330 + 470 + 910 + 690) = 2400

The 1710 value will likely be out of the expected range, and cause an error. The RW should still work normally, even with the resistors reversed.

You can't swap key actions by swapping the resistor values.

If I've confused anyone, let me know and I'll explain again with pictures.

Bottom line: I put the resistors back the the proper order, and my Zen Micro remote conversion to CE-RH1 values now works as expected, although some of the switches are labelled wrong.  I'll either live with it, relabel the switches (I think they can be swapped), or use Keyhelper or other routine to change the functions of the switches in software.

MONVMENTVM -- thanks for the info on using the Zen Micro remote -- it's really a lot better than I would have built from scratch.  I personally think it looks nicer than the Sharp remotes.

General Discussion / C860 Vs C3100

dbowden,

I found out after my purchase an advantage the 3100 has over the 1000 is convenience.  It is similar to having built in wifi or bluetooth.  The 4GB is just "there".  Besides the 3100 and the 1000 have the same bulk.  I'd rather use that bulk than have empty space.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=111302\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Yeah -- you really are a devil aren't you?  You're just trying to talk me into spending more money.

Honestly, I am tempted by the 3100.  I work for a Japanese company, and have been talking to an expatriate about having one of his friends bring me something Zaurusy in his suitcase.  The problem is, even at Japanese prices, there's still a $200 price difference between the 1000 and the 3100.  If I hadn't just bought a 4GB drive, I'd probably be even more interested in the 3100.
