Gemini PDA - Sailfish OS / Battery tip
« on: September 04, 2018, 10:10:19 am »
I wasn't aware WiFi users had a battery drain issue since I am 4G only. As you said under 4G my the battery is lasting quite a long time. I never make it to 70% to be honest.

I believe you can run x11 applications with xwayland. Ill give it a shot tonight.

Edit: I was able to install xwayland, still trying to get x running
I'll be really interested to hear your results. All I could find about it was from here, which is more than four years old:
https://together.jolla.com/question/36877/h...ely-or-locally/

I kept getting a xbd keymap error at first, so I commented out the keycodes above 255 at
/usr/share/X11/xkb/keycodes/evdev

Then I was able to start xwayland server successfully.

But still having some trouble

-- Potentially serious: when it goes to black and I close the screen, when I open it again it's in recovery mode.

That is not normal behavior, not sure what is causing that sorry.

Some very interesting reading there

I take it that this OS cannot run all the usual apps like the Android OS, if that is the case, I think I would struggle with this OS as I now use the Gemini as my main device

It is capable if we had the license for dalvik but at this time SFOS dalvik is only licensed for specific devices. Considering Gemini PDA appears to be one of the flagship SFOS 3.x devices I imagine it will be available when 3.x is.

The silver button actually send event to /dev/input/event1 - code 231

mapping this event as keyboard input via X11/xkb files does  not seem to work.
I suppose droid.qmap needs to be built with mapping of this event

which leads to question - where is the kmap source of this file ?

Thank you for this. I am going to start playing with my Gemini again this week so I will see what I can do with that.

Hey Vader! I am definitely interested in this project. Out of curiousity I would like to run and old version of Windows.

Thanks Vader, I added it on my gitlab for anyone who comes across any of the other tutorial/info there.

Definitely! I will credit you as well on the Gitlab repo

Did you compile the code from the SDK or was it a QML file you just modified to hard code the orientation?

Thanks for that pointer/post. Meganerd suggests this way to lock down landscape:

ii) Modify Page.qml (line 115)
    Original line: return Orientation.All
    Updated line: return Orientation.LandscapeInverted

    Other views: Orientation.Portrait | Orientation.Landscape | Orientation.LandscapeInverted

iii) Reboot phone to apply changes

But while I found line 115 (after "pkcon install nano"), I did not find "Orientation. All" There were other Orientations, but not that one, so I closed out without changing anything.

Jake

Hello, it sounds like you're on SFOS 2.1.4.14

Please see the notes I added from user Dietmar Schwertberge regarding the differences

https://gitlab.com/Meganerd.eth/Sailfish-De...20SFOS%202.x.md

Change this:
allowed = Orientation.LandscapeInverted | orientation === Orientation.Portrait | orientation === Orientation.PortraitInverted

To this:
allowed = Orientation.LandscapeInverted

Can we remove the application files related to the tutorial?

My build doesn't force the tutorial on reboots (only initially after install)- so the most I ever tried was removing it from the app menu, which then it readded itself at the end.
I didnt fight it too much since I just ignore the application.

Edit:

Try this from a terminal:
touch /home/nemo/.jolla-startupwizard-sfos2-tutorial
touch /home/nemo/.jolla-startupwizard-done
touch /home/nemo/.jolla-startupwizard-usersession-done

Thanks for posting about this!

I was very curious since I am debating on getting the camera addition.

So initiating calls works out of the box? Good to know. Does your phone go to 3g mode during calls?

If anyone figures out how to get keyboard shortcuts I would be very grateful!
My idea was to look for the system files that control the currently working hotkeys.

Since I am able to use FN + both volume keys to screenshot, and also use FN + C or FN +V to raise/lower volume I would imagine we could simply modify the file(s) for other functions.
I only looked once but was not able to locate these files just yet.

I've two WiFi network, for one SFOS didn't accept its long password, affirming it was wrong, it connected to the other, but when I installed Italian language, reconfigured all and then WLan doesn't connect...

salvo

Are you referring to your home WiFi network? (eg 2 seperate ESSID)
If so it sounds like you have a dual band access point, one network on 5Ghz and the other on 2.4Ghz.

I believe I saw a previous user post about not being able to join 5Ghz WiFi networks.
You best bet may be to try SFOS 2.1.3.7 or wait for SFOS 3.x release.

I have been testing SFOS 2.1.3.7 on my Gemini PDA for a little over a week now as my main OS.
I finally got SFOS flashed (e.g. hanged in tutorial - not able to swipe back from gallery app). But now I can't see any phone settings, no mobile network selection nor SIM subfolder in Settings. No signal strength indicator either. And yes, I have working SIM card inserted and funtion in Android side.

SFOS 2.1.4.14 / 0.0.1+master.20180425220752.e3d6f1b.1 (reported by SFOS About product).

I have x27 version, and dual boot with 16GB Android / 40GB Linux split.

There's no 'Mobile network', 'SIM cards' or 'Internet sharing' selections between WLAN and VPN, where those supposed to be. Why's that?

. Need more investigation.

Edit: It seems ofono service can/should be disabled and some other service launced it. Anyhow, now I can receive sms, but not make calls. It says 'No network coverage' when trying to make a call.

That is really odd, you're actually missing "Cellular network" and "Internet sharing" options which would be between WLAN and VPN.

Perhaps you can flash 2.1.3.7 SFOS (same as me)?

Sorry to hear that, it seems like a number of users are having a few issues with the SFOS 2.1.4.14 image.
I have yet to flash and test that one out myself so hopefully you get it or find someone who has been testing that image.

You may try looking in to the SIM setup, on my device I can select between SIM 1 and SIM 2, defining which SIM slot to use for data and SMS.

Everything going fine on the 2.1.3.7 install still so I am currently focusing on developing apps and misc scripts for myself at this point.

If you get it working and have any specific fixes let me know!
