UBPorts definitely lends itself well to a 'half and half' device like the Cosmo! SMS not working is a biggie for me though (Can't even setup Axolotl for Signal without it) and it won't play music via the music player which makes it a bit of a non-starter for me. The content sharing hub is also completely broken which makes a lot of things awkward.

Really nice OS though and I'll definitely leave it on and watch it mature!

Curious to know how long compiling that custom kernel takes! Can I use Distcc so I can use my real PC to assist?

Well I got a solid install of UB using the steps throughly, bu still ened up wiping Gemian I think. if you were genuinely able to boot Android, Rooted Droid, Debian and UB, I would lke to see it. the only thing I didn'y do is run that last line of code from step 1 in the top post. the only thing i didn't do was the last step of the first instruction post.

Here's a video showing my current setup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSw_2ovdBy0

Did you overwrite your Debian boot option with the UBPorts one? You need to put it in another slot.

You have no rooted Android.
I have and as long there is no AOSP android image from Pl. Co .I have to stay rooted for security reasons (blocking google etc)
So eighter Debian or UBports.
Both are not usable as a daily driver, nor is Android because of old security patches and issues.

I don't think I ever claimed to have rooted Android, though I guess I could put it into my TWRP partition as that's next to useless anyway, it'd lose modem functionality though. The only way I've found to have additional 'slots' on the bootloader is to just manually re-install the rooted Android boot option from the SD card which is obviously a bit rubbish. It'd be nice to have two more slots on the bootloader, for rooted Android and Sailfish OS too, but I don't see how that's possible!

The UBPorts image resides in the same main partition as Debian, so you don't need to delete either. The bootloader has extra boot options, and by using my script (attached) on your Cosmo alternative OS installer SD card thing you can flash the UBPorts boot.img to one of these boot options and essentially triple-boot Android, Debian and UBPorts.

You'll also need to put the boot.img on your SD card in the same folder and change its name to 'ubports-boot.img' for my script to work, and also add this:

Code: [Select]
echo "UBPorts,$MBF/Cosmo_Installer_UBPorts.sh" >> $INSTALLER_FILE

To the bottom of the list_installers.sh file (above the 'rm -f $PARTITION_FILE' line) and, as noted above, put the ubuntu.img file in the root directory of your Gemian install. Now boot to recovery with the SD card inserted and install UBPorts to another boot partition of your choice (But not the second one, as noted above there's no networking there!)

I've found the UBPorts image to be the most fleshed-out alternate OS yet - the camera works, keyboard layout works, 4G works, Bluetooth works  8)

I used a .sh script in the Planet recovery/bootloader thing to flash the hybris-boot.img (modified from the Debian one), and have tried both the 3.2.1.20-devel zip and the newer 3.4 one on the CI, both fail to go any further than the Planet logo boot splash! Curious to know if anyone's gotten either image working, I'd really love to try Sailfish on the Cosmo :)

EDIT: Attached my Cosmo_Installer_Sailfish.sh here as requested in the Telegram channel

Cosmo Communicator - General Discussion / Belt cases for cosmo?

Does anyone have a waterproof baggie that their Cosmo fits in? Something along these lines:

[img]https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81JXetrw5aL._SL1500_.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

All of the generic ones on Amazon seem to be of a similar size. I've got a normal-size one and my Sony Xperia X barely fits in it, let alone the gigantic Cosmo, so I'm thinking of trying to find a 'phablet' sized one, but I'm still worried the thickness will cause issues.

I'm not after anything pretty, just something that'll keep my Cosmo dry when cycling in the rain when stuffed in a pocket.

Cosmo Communicator - Linux / GSM-calls?

Which /dev/radio interface did you use? I've tried a few so far with no luck. I'm just using minicom though so not sure if I'm doing it wrong!

Hi there!

I must have pressed some fairly wrong things in trying this as mine looked nothing like yours, but this looks (or sounds) to be working now after copying your configuration exactly. Thanks a lot!

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this and if there's any easy fixes about. I can't get any sound to work at all, whether I'm just listening to YouTube, or trying to record audio through the mic. This goes for both the headphone jack and the speakers/mic built into the device. Pulseaudio seems to have quite a lot of different sound input/outputs as well as a number of different profiles, I've tried lots of combinations with no success so far.

I'm not looking for some awesome pro audio setup, just enough to maybe make voice calls over Facebook or Skype through the browser

Thanks!

EDIT: This has been solved as per cam1965's response below!

But that still seems to be a bug as the cursor shows up just fine on Android when using the right side port.

In android  Usb on the right side works only if cover display is enabled.. If you connect a usb mass storage on the right side it will work only if cover display is enabled.

This seems to be the case with charging too. The Cosmo won't charge without CoDi disabled in the right port, and under Debian it'll only charge via the left port. Really weird but I suppose the two are wired together somehow.

Cosmo Communicator - Android / Magisk: cannot install modules
« on: March 20, 2020, 07:02:21 pm »
My Magisk Manager won't actually let me install Magisk at all, only gives me the option to download the ZIP. My app looks like the one Planet show on their web page to suggest I'm not rooted. I installed Rooted Android to EMPTY_NORMAL_BOOT_4 partition and have booted to it successfully, but it's essentially behaving like a standard Android install. Anyone know how to get this working?

Cosmo Communicator - Hardware / Sourcing replacement inner screen
« on: March 13, 2020, 10:08:16 am »
Apparently the reason for the high repair cost is that essentially the entire innards of the phone are attached to the screen, so replacing it would effectively replace the entire thing (barring the keyboard/battery). First time round they tried telling me that the $500 cost was to 'cover repair, postage and tax to cater to our international customers' but once I told them I'm based in the UK just like they are, and so such postage/tax costs wouldn't really be relevant, they changed their tune.

I did originally have the plan to buy a dead/bricked phone with an otherwise good screen and swap the part out but it seems like that's just going to cause even more headache. So I guess I'm stuck with a broken screen for now!

Also it appears the Gemini screen is slightly different, though they weren't able to tell me in what way, so that probably wouldn't be a good idea either.

Cosmo Communicator - Hardware / Sourcing replacement inner screen

Hi!

I've stupidly managed to drop my (uninsured) Cosmo and cracked the screen. E-Mailed Planet and they want $500 to repair it!

I'm just wondering if anyone has had any luck sourcing spares elsewhere. Planet so far have been reluctant to send me one rather than me sending them the phone to fix it up, but I'm going to try and push harder for this.

i suppose this is more of a rant and a warning not to smash your screen up to avoid ridiculous repair costs but I am legitimately looking for better options before letting Planet screw me out of $500, so if anyone has any ideas I'm all ears!

I can't even figure out how to access the symbol keys... The Fn key acts as a super in Debian so I can't use that to access any of the extra symbols on my number line or the ones on IOP/JKL keys!

Has anyone figured that part out yet?

Did you read the 'Tips' section within the Debian/KDE section on the PC Linux on Cosmo page?

Mark

I did read it, but switching it to gb keyboard didn't seem to help, until I removed the 'US' keyboard layout from my options and just set it to GB only. Now it all seems to work.

The WiFi passphrase loss on reboot above worked for me too!

Now just to get bluetooth and 4G working... hmmm...
