Software / Zaurus Port Of Treeline
« on: April 27, 2005, 07:47:35 am »
OK folks,

today I received my "new" 5500 so things should slowly start moving once again.

In the few long weeks without a Zaurus I've come up with alternative ways of doing PIM stuff. Thanks to that I will try to use the Zaurus less as a PIM tool and more as a development and testing toy. Hopefully my life will not disintegrate into complete chaos.

I would like everyone who is interested in this program to let me know
- the ROM (including version) they want to run it under,
- whether that ROM is available for the SL-5500, and
- where that ROM can be downloaded.

Thanks,
z.

OESF Announcements / Minor Forum Changes Complete!
« on: April 26, 2005, 05:12:13 am »
Hi all,

today I found out the forums have been shuffled around a bit. So far I'm not sure whether or not I like it but the

General Forums > OS Support and Discussion

group should surely be renamed to

General Forums > Desktop OS Support and Discussion

or, even better,

General Forums > Desktop Operating Systems Issues

At present, one doesn't even know whether OS means "operating system" or "open source" until one looks at individual forum names. That's a usability no-no.

Just my $0.02.

Software / Sync Problem
« on: April 24, 2005, 02:42:21 am »
That's strange. Pinging means you can route packages both ways, so it should work. Can you run 'netstat -rn' on Zaurus and post the output?

What does your /etc/fstab look like? And what does output from dmesg say?

IPADDR='192.168.168.252'
NETMASK='255.255.255.0'
NETWORK='192.168.129.0'
BROADCAST='192.168.129.255'
STARTMODE='hotplug'
Your desktop's DHCP-assigned address is not relevant here. When the USB connection to your Zaurus activates, an additional network interface is normally set up automatically. You can check this by running 'ifconfig' on the command line when Zaurus is connected to the PC. You should see three entries: lo, eth0 and usb0.

The usb0 interface will probably have an address in the 192.168.129.* range - hence the setup you describe is correct except for the IPADDR which should be 192.168.129.252.

Hope this helps,
z.

OpenZaurus/Opie/Qtopia / Opie-wordgame...where Is The Wordlist?
« on: April 20, 2005, 04:54:56 am »
There was a discussion of this a while ago, my findings are summarized in one of the posts. The instructions refer to Opie's standard dictionary file, you obviously need to modify things if you want an official dictionary, or if you are running Opie on top of something else than OpenZaurus.

Hope this helps,

Software / How Do I Associate A File Type With A Program?
« on: April 20, 2005, 04:47:12 am »
Google for "qtopia-addmimetype" - it is a script that does this automatically. As far as I know it isn't installed in any ROM by default. So if you find it on the Net, copy it to your Z and try running it (presumably it will tell you what parameters it needs).

Hope this helps,
z.

Hi all,

I lost my treasured 5500 a few weeks ago. I need a replacement quite badly but my budget is limited. I am looking to spend about US$150 plus shipping, not more than US$180 all together (I live in the EU).

As I'm looking for a replacement, I really don't care much about accessories (I already have what I need). All I need is the unit itself, although I wouldn't mind a CF memory card (lost mine with the Z). Ideally, I would like to buy from someone who is upgrading, or has just upgraded, to a clamshell.

C'mon folks, don't let me down!

Cheers,
z.

Python is probably the easiest to set up. No cross-compilation etc. Check out the Python forums right next door.

- either you take it out of the loop entirely and just stick the path to treeline.py as the icon action, seems to work just as well :-)

Can you try the following please?

1. Launch TreeLine by tapping on its icon.
2. Push the Home button to get back to Qtopia desktop.
3. Tap the TreeLine icon in the task bar to go back to TreeLine.

I remember having a big problem with this - TreeLine would never come back up. My setup of treeline.desktop / treelinelauncher / treeline.py is the only way I found to make it work.

Thanks,
z.

I wonder which version a proper IPK installation with a working icon will give ?
*sigh* I have to buy a new unit by the end of the month. This is no good without a Zaurus.

fpp: You da man! I'm very impressed. Two of the problems you mention are very easy to solve or work around:

1. The Enter key on the keyboard is equivalent to the OK key, at least on the 5500. That allows me to define new data types even on the Zaurus (although it is pure torture). I have added this workaround to the documentation.

2. If the biggest difference between Sharp and OZ packages is the archiving program used, it's very trivial to create both versions. I have now added a package to the download area that will hopefully work with Sharp ROMs. I have no way of testing that, of course. There may be dependency problems if python packages on the Sharp side are structured differently than under OZ. It might have to be installed without dependency checking.

I must say I never thought that differences between Sharp ROMs and OpenZaurus might present bigger problems than differences between Zaurus models

Cheers,
z.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / X Apps On Opie, Or Opie Apps On X
« on: April 09, 2005, 10:43:35 am »
Qt: A multi-platform graphics toolkit comprising a library and a skinnable widget set. Relies on other software for low-level drawing operations (which may be X or whatever Mac OS X or Windows provides).

Qt/Embedded: Abbreviated as Qt/E. A version of Qt intended for use in embedded Linux environments for devices with limited resources. It is adjusted to perform its own drawing operations using the framebuffer device available under Linux.

Qtopia: Formerly known as the Qt Palmtop Environment or QPE. A graphic user environment (GUI) built with Qt/Embedded. This is what you interact with when using a Zaurus with its original Sharp ROM.

Opie: Open Palmtop Integrated Environment. A graphic user environment (GUI) derived from Qtopia. This is what you usually interact with when using OpenZaurus. Opie's development is less reliant on Trolltech (creators of Qt, Qt/E and Qtopia) as it is basically an independent fork of Qtopia.

Basically, if you have a clamshell Zaurus, you can run Qt/E and X applications side-by-side if you run pdaXrom which is a ROM that includes an X server. If you are using a brick-style (5x00) Zaurus you are basically stuck with Qtopia or Opie apps. Note that Opie and Qtopia seem to be slowly diverging so applications written for one are not necessarily compatible with the other.

Hope this helps,
z.

One more note regarding clamshell use: you want to contact user fpp, he has run my port on a 760 and there seem to be only minor glitches (like maximized dialogs, needlessly narrow dialogs etc.). As for speed, I'm sure it's better than on the 5500

Cheers,
z.
