Debian / Htc Universal

Well, for listening to streams, I currently use mplayer as that was already installed, it works well but the volume seems to be way too low, even when I set mplayer to 100% by repeatedly mashing the asterix (*) key..

I plan on writing a Perl script to automate this, just a simple while-loop that'll call mplayer, then if mplayer dies, bring down ppp0, wait 5 seconds, bring it back up again, wait another 5 seconds and then relaunch mplayer.

As for the tracking, I've installed bluez-utils and wrote a perl script that does the following;

1. Open the GPS device using the rfcomm util
2. Open the serial device step 1 creates; /dev/rfcomm0
3. While-loop through the data, whenever it receives a $GPRMC line, store this in a variable
4. As part of the above while-loop there is a check on the last time it submitted the content to an external API via a HTTP GET / POST request, it will do it once every 5 seconds (configurable).

To do this I've had to apt-get update the system, and then install the following CPAN modules;

* Device::SerialPort
* HTTP::Request

It's still a work-in-progress, it works fine but the coordinates appear offset slightly, I think it may be due to me just shifting the decimal place on the DDMM.MMMM request, maybe I need to use another formula.. heh

I'll post up all my work once I'm satisfied it's bug-free

Ps. Installing CPAN modules with Perl is a complete nightmare, you have to create at least a 128MB Swap File and it's PAINFULLY slow, it took 45 minutes to install HTTP::Request, I think I'll release a gzipped tarball of my filesystem once it's done.

FINALLY my HTC Universal has a purpose
Not for long, I'm afraid.

I've been running debian on the Uni for a long time now, but the biggest problem is the overall slowness of the system, there's no way you can play movies satisfactorily for instance, and emacs runs, so this is a godsend, but still if you have lot of stuff in .emacs, the startup takes ages etc.

The Nokia N900 has, it seems, started shipping to stores now, and it's gonna be reaching the endmarket somewhere around the beginning of December - and that's gonna be GNU/Linux for your mobile phone! If you'll wish for Debian, you'll run it from chroot no prob. It should be, judging by the videos, super fast, so another dimension for mobile GNU/Linux it seems.

I think I'll put my Uni to rest right when I get this new Nokia in the mail.

Granted, the keyboard on it sucks bigtime, compared with the Uni, but just the keyboard won't be reason enough to hold back and stick with the Uni, I think...

Well, my Uni has been sat in a drawer for years not doing anything, I feel with this it has a purpose again, something I can script / program and easily work with, FAR easier than WinMo.

I plan to use it in my car for GPS tracking and listening to online radio stations, one of my peeves about listening to streams in WinMo was that if you went through a patchy coverage area, the phone would disconnect UTMS and sometimes fail to reconnect, I could write a crontab to check the connection every 60 seconds and reset it, as well as then restart the music stream

Just one of the many uses I'm going to have for it

Is it not possible to boot up and shut down apmd before it shuts your Z down? (Just an idea, could be useless )

This thread contains a wealth of information, it's taken 3 days to read through it all, but man was it worth it.

Thanks to Neil and everyone else who has contributed to this thread, let's keep it going

For Sale / Wanted / For Sale: Partially Damaged C860

I don't want to have to sell this, I love my Z, but real life has to come first :/

I'm selling my C860. It's in working order, presently has pdaXrom installed, the only thing wrong with it is I somehow managed to fry the CF card slot, there's a black burn mark around one of the pins on the connector. Unit also has minor scuffs from regular use.

This may be fixable by someone with microsoldering experience, sadly I don't. It is fully  working bar this one point and comes with a UK mains PSU, non-original stylus (lost it so took one from an older pda) and a serial cable.

I'll be changing jobs soon and I plan to invest in at least a C1000 but for now I have bills to pay.

I'm looking for around £150 or nearest offer (including shipping within the UK), I may also ship worldwide but this will cost extra. Methods of payment are direct bank transfer, paypal (5% extra to cover their costs please) or if you can get to Birmingham then cash-in-hand would be acceptible.

General Discussion / Sdio On C860 Update?
« on: January 26, 2006, 05:03:25 am »
The reason why I'm creating this thread seperately from the pinned topic about C860 SDIO as this is more of a personal problem.

A couple of months ago I tried an old CF WiFi card in my C860 that for some reason permanently damaged the CF slot. I was gutted at this and as such started to use my Z less and less.

It's only when I've moved home and unpacked all my gear I've thought "I need to use my Z more.."

Recently, with newer model Z's coming out the talks on whether the C860 is SDIO-compatible has become stale. SDIO is now my only way to get any form of "comfortable" Internet access on my Z.

I was taking a look at this eBay Auction and wondered would this or any other SDIO WiFi card work with the C860? I'm not bothered which ROM, although naturally I'd prefer it to run under pdaXrom.

Anyone able to help? Although I'm not rich, I'm willing to donate what little I can afford to help "promote" more SDIO development for the Cxx0's.

Holy crap! I take a break and I return to find there's a PSX emulator in the works for the C series?

Goddam this is amazing news!

zodttd, I can't afford much in the way of money as I'm having to use all my spare cash on driving lessons, but if you need anything like webspace / mirrors just let me or anyone else here know, we'll look after you

Cxx0 Hardware / Problem With My 760!
« on: May 05, 2005, 01:40:05 pm »
I had this problem, you need to do a nand flash erase:

(hold down D+M when entering menu, go to menu page 3/3 and choose option 7. Extra Menu and choose NAND Flash Erase)

Then you need to do a NAND Flash Restore with the conics image. Make sure all the files are on a FAT16 formatted CF card and in the / folder on the CF card.

EDIT: Got the keys wrong at the top, please note to get into the service menu it's D+M aka Developer Menu, not D+B aka Developer Boot).

Hi all, this is just a simple one. Support for Sharp Cellphones is few and far between (I know this because I work for Vodafone UK, Sharp refer customers to us for support for these Cellphones!) and I believe it would be nice to have a Sharp Cellphone Support Forum right here on the OE Forums.

The benefits for this would be:

* Increased traffic to the site (and as such more people finding out what a Zaurus is)
* Support for devices that run Symbian (and may also be converted to Linux)
* An influx of developers and smart people to help with both Zaurus and non-Zaurus topics

The cons would be:

* Another possible forum reshuffle to move all non-Zaurus products into their own "Group"
* An influx of twinks / n00bs who just won't use the goddam search button

Just telling it like it is...

you can use rdesktop, which is available as an ipk, to access a windows server which has terminal services, just like you would with windows remote desktop client.
