OpenBSD / Openbsd Zaurus Screenshots

Hi,

I've seen several screenshots on this site and using Google but I am interested in seeing more, people using different windows managers, programs, text, etc. Post your shots here please!

Knowing tha most of my recent posts have related to problems on OpenBSD, I thought it would be nice to post some of my successes. This is an old thread,  I thought that even some of the Debian followers might like to see what can be done on OpenBSD with relatiely little effort. I've not been able to do this much on Titchy, Yonggun or Zubunu Linux although all three distributions have impressed me and will suit some other people perfectly.

I'm running OpenBSD 4.4 and as you can see, icewm as my window manager. Icewm is nice and responsive yet still quite flexible. I've also found it easier to get font sizes that are readable on such a small screen. The apps shown are just a fraction of what I've got running on it. Compiling can take a long time but the process has been pretty reliable, so it is well worth the wait to know that you'll end up with a package that is optimised for the actual CPU, not just ARM architecture.

So, here we go...

Forgive the poor colours on these shots which are due to the version of VNC that I've used to capture them. In reality the colours are bright and vivid and the wallpaper fades nicely from black to blue.

Screen2 shows Minimo and xterm while Driftnet captures any image files that happen to be floating elsewhere in the wireless ether. Driftnet works in promiscuous mode. As a browser, Minimo is a good compromise between speed and functionality. I'm currently comiling Galeon which is also quite useful on the Z

Screen3 shows the Etherape network mapper and a client for Nessus, the network vulnerability scanner (note nessusd is the server and that is also running on the Z)

Screen4 Time for some office applications Here ares gnumeric and abiword.

Screen5 shows use of PERL to run the SQLiX vulnerability scanner. Any PERL modules not in the ports tree can be downloaded and compiled without problem from CPAN. Try doing that from Cacko or Angstrom !
 [ Invalid Attachment ]

There are some pretty heavy-weight applications here and they all run fine provided there is plenty of swap.

I've compiled jamvm and classpath from the 4.4 port tree but I've found that the java application I want to run fails with a core dump. I'm trying to run paros proxy which says it requires Java runtime 1.4.2.

Any help here would be welcome.

Ubuntu / Zubuntu Is The Best. Thank You!
« on: February 02, 2009, 12:06:03 pm »
I tried Zubuntu in January and I agree that it is an amazing feat and easily the most polished 'Debian' distro for the Z.

However, I do a lot of security based work and for me it is important fot the wireless card to operate in promiscuous mode so that tools like tcpdump can see all the traffic on the associated wireless network. I was not able to do this on Zubuntu so I've gone back to OpenBSD. If anybody can show me how to do this then I'll be very tempted to come back!

Excellent work, Cortez!

OpenBSD / Cant Boot Openbsd
« on: January 22, 2009, 05:10:54 pm »
Well, I finally worked it out, and it also seems to answer this post, where the poster was coming directly from OZ, as was I. He also claimed to be a veteran of BSD installing so went straight to the D+B menu and the insmod commands.

https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=24159

Having read this, I remembered that the two successful installs I had done both came from having cacko on the Z and installing the OpenBSDxx.ipk file. My experience was that this install file did no appear to do anything except hang the Z so was not worth doing. It seemed to be better to skip straight to the D+M menu and the insmod command sequence.

However, it seems that the Sharp/Cacko IPK file does something that enables the Z to boot directly into OpenBSD once you have done a successful intstall.  I guess it tinkers with the scripts held in flash.

So, in summary, to install OpenBSD so that it boots without having to go to the D+B menu, make sure you start from a Sharp/Cacko build and run the BSD install IPK. You'll find it in the feed.

Enjoy!

OpenBSD / Cant Boot Openbsd
« on: January 11, 2009, 06:57:17 pm »
Thought i'd give my problem its own thread:

After installing OZ I decided to go back to OpenBSD. The install process went OK with my sets on a CF card and using all the microdrive for BSD. However, when it came to rebooting the Z simply dropped into the OZ splash screen with a kernel panic. I tried restoring flash and re-installing but now i get the Sharp splash scree and an hdd error.

I decided to completely clean the HDD usung the D+M menu (which takes a while) and re-installed again. Still no joy when it comes to boot. I'm stuch. Help!

Here is a df done from the emergency D+B menu
Code: [Select]
disk dev hda 4096 MB 4095737856 bytes
16 heads, 63 sectors/track, 7936 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 = 516096 bytes

Device        Boot     Start          End         Blocks       Id     System
dev/hda4    *          1               7936        3999712+ a6    OpenBSD

cant understand why I've got hda4? doesnt make sense!

during the BSD setup my disk partition looks like this
Code: [Select]
size           offset     fstype       [fsize   bsize     cpg]
a:    7999425           63        4.2BSD      2048    16384    1
c:    7999488             0        unused            0          0

EDIT
I should add that the installation will boot if I drop back to d+b linux shell and do insmod zbsdmod.o then ./zboot. Sorry, but I really dont understand what makes a machine actually boot but clearly something is wrong here.

OpenBSD / Openbsd Install With Out Network

Hello to every one

I want to install OpenBSD (with the installation files in the tar.gz of the first topic) but i dont have a ethernet or wireless cf (only a bluetooth cf)
Is posible to install it with a network over usb or copying the files in a cf? I need to do something especial?

In other hand, the sd reader dont work in the OpenBSD, no?

I've had success in the past copying all the install files to a CF or and SD card. You start the installation from  D+B menu, cd to your media card and then run the insmod zbsdmod.o and cp bsd.rd /proc/zboot. Choose no when asked to setup the network. When the dialogue asks for the install location, just specify your CF (wd1) or SD card.

Reading from SD is not a problem but currently, writing to SD is not supported. You dont need to write to SD during the installation so there shouldn't be a problem.

Having been playing with Zubuntu, OpenZaurus and Angstrom recently I decided to put openBSD back on my C3000. I did exactly as described above and the install completed fine. However, whe it came to reboot, following he halt command, it just boots the OZ splash screen and kernel panics. I'm a bit stuck. Any ideas welcome, see my new thread!

OpenZaurus/Opie/Qtopia / Libxml-parser-perl Doesn't Work
« on: January 11, 2009, 06:44:20 am »
Quote from: ShiroiKuma
I'm using GPE 3.5.4.1 on an SL-C3200 and having problems with XML Parser.

I've installed the one from the feed but it bombs with an error when required by Perl, the problem is the file  /usr/lib/perl5/auto/XML/Parser/Expat/Expat.so

In fact, when building libxml-parser-perl with OpenEmbedded it gives a fatal error on stripping the same file, but it goes and completes the build, but it's unusable.

I tried compiling XML Parser natively on the Z, but I get "no rule to make target /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.7/ExtUtils/typemap" error and haven't discovered how to fix it.

Has anyone built a working XML Parser for Perl?

I've got exactly the same error while trying to build Compress::Raw::Zlib

I've not found a way round this

Just a quick post to say that I'm now up and running with my C3000! Wifi is running just fine and the microdrive is recognised. apt-get seems to work fine. Thanks Cortez and everybody else!

OK, thanks, I'll do a completely fresh install with all the latest files and make sure my card is Ext2 at the same time. Will report back later this evening...

Cortez. I've done a fresh install using the spitz tar file in your link an the other files from your blog - I trust that will give me the latest kernel. I've also made sure my SD card is formatted ext2 this time. I still cannot see any CF devices and hence cant even manually configure a network interface. My symptoms are:
no /dev/hdx devices listed at all
no output from pccardctl ident

Here is my dmesg | tail output:
Code: [Select]
logger created 64k log 'log_radio'
TCP cubic registered
Xscale iWMMXt coprocessor detected
sa1100-rtc sa1100-rtc: setting systen clock to 1970-01-02 etc
Waiting for root device /dev/mmcblkp01..
mmc new SD card at address b368
mmblk0: mmc0:b368 SD      1960448K1B
 mmcblk0: p1 p2
VFS: mounted root (ext2 filesystel) readonly
Freeing init memory: 80K

What now?

It looks like you're using the older kernel. Please update it with the latest version (/boot/zImage). Don't forget to reboot afterwards

Cortez, I dont have a module pxa2xx_cs. Modprobe cant recognise it, nor can I locate it with find.
I'm using a C3000.

Any thoughts?
For the C3000 using the latest Spitz kernel pxa2xx_cs is compiled into the kernel already, so you won't have to load it manually. Please insert a CF card and check dmesg | tail to see what's going on

here it is - not what I was expecting to see!

Code: [Select]
#dmesg |tail
sharpsl-pm sharpsl.pm Fatal Batt Error! Suspending

wakeup: PEDR: 1, PKSRL 0, HP_IN: 100000. AK_INTL 2000

so I rebooted and ran it again. by the way, all error messages are typed by hand so apolgies if any tying errors have crept in.

Code: [Select]
#dmesg |tail
snd: version magic '2.6.26-omegamoon preempt mod_unload ARMv5 ' should be '2.6.26-omegamoon-akita preempt mod_unload ARMv5'

snd_soc_core: version magic '2.6.26-omegamoon preempt mod_unload ARMv5 ' should be '2.6.26-omegamoon-akita preempt mod_unload ARMv5'
snd_soc_pxa2xx: version magic '2.6.26-omegamoon preempt mod_unload ARMv5 ' should be '2.6.26-omegamoon-akita preempt mod_unload ARMv5'
snd_soc_wm8750: version magic '2.6.26-omegamoon preempt mod_unload ARMv5 ' should be '2.6.26-omegamoon-akita preempt mod_unload ARMv5'
snd_soc_pxa2xx_i2s: version magic '2.6.26-omegamoon preempt mod_unload ARMv5 ' should be '2.6.26-omegamoon-akita preempt mod_unload ARMv5'
EXT3 FS on mmcblk0p1, internal journal uinput:version magic '  should be '2.2.26-omegamoon-akita preempt mod_unload ARMv5'

I certainly was not aware that my card is EXT3, although I'm happy to reformat and install again if that might be causing the problem.

Edit:
How can I fix the mouse navigation? it is reversed. I can use my USB mouse to access right-clicks. The stylus and touchscreen don't have right-click.

Ah, of course! no need for google - the answer was right in front of me if only I had engaged my brain to look for it!

I'll try this tomorrow.

Kind regards.

Wildherb, I got my Ambicom WL1100C card working by installing wifi-radar from the repository.
Look at this thread, it's kind of messy, but it works for me with hostap. I blacklisted orinoco

Jon_J, thanks, I did see your post about wifi-radar and I then went googling for the ubuntu arm repository - but with no luck. Would you be so kind as to share the link with me?

I've now re-flashed my C3000 with Angstrom plus the multi-boot kernel. Zubuntu now boots fine from my SD card, I'll check out getting Angstrom working shortly, but first, I"ve been itching to see Zubuntu in action.

Cortez. this is a stunning piece of work, my warmest congratulations to you! Seriously, it is exactly what the Z has waiting for! It seems to be very fast and responsive, and (important for me) easy to adjust the fonts to make it easy on the eyes on such a small screen.

Unfortunately, I've also hit the same issues as others on this thread regarding access to CF devices. For reference, the cards I've got availale for testing are as follows and I cant get anthing out of any of them. I managed to get yonggun debian working by manually configuring /etc/network/interfaces but nothing seems to work here.

3 wifi cards:
Symbol Spectrum24
Netgear MA701
Ambicom WL1100C

Socket Bluetooth rev F

Planex 10baseT

Plus various sizes of CF memory carsds which I cant seem to mount.

Ubuntu / Memory Cards And Multibooting
« on: December 27, 2008, 04:41:09 pm »
Can anybody tell me if this multi-boot from SD works with SDHC cards which are fast and available in quite large capacities? If it does then moomincity's post has prompted me to think about the need to have an internal microdrive at all in a spitz, in which case my mind turns to the possibility of using the CF slot for something else, e.g. building in a bluetooth card. Any thoughts?
