Thank you to everyone in the Zaurus community who support pdaXrom through all the good and bad times and especially those who have donated in the past and those who have just donated to purchase a 6000L for the project (and loc4me for making the device affordable!)

I and the rest of pdaXrom appreciate the generosity and will pay the community back shortly with a release!

Thanks Again

pdaXrom Development / Pdaxrom Developement
« on: June 28, 2008, 05:15:21 pm »
All,
Over the years pdaXrom has been seen as the "Closed Source" project for the Zaurus platform, with just about all Core development being done by Sash with the help of Laze and Pgas. Around late 2006 I joined up with pdaXrom to assist in the migration to the 2.6 kernel series and assist with maintaining the web portal as Laze was phasing out of development due to the lack of time. I've been working with sash on a daily basis, looking at different options and customizations to do to benefit the community and future of the zaurus. We have brought on multiple developers and lost multiple developers due to the lack of documentation and stability of build system. I and sash seen our system as stable (with a few quarks) because we knew the ins and outs of the system, but we finally realized that we need to either move to a new development direction (UME) or start over and document the processes and procedures. Well a few road bumps we decided that PTXDIST is the builder we should stick with and we should start from scratch. Build each component in with the latest and greatest and document as we go.

Currently we are in the alpha stages and we have an EABI build that will boot and function on the c7x0, c860, c1000, c3100 and c3200. (work in progress for 6000 and 3000) and as of now all development is being done by myself and Sash. So if you are interested in the project and want to join the project we are not stopping you, just speak up :-)

PS. I did NOT proof read this (Lazy) so if you see typos, sorry!

I have a feeling that at those prices, the 6000's are gone.
I haven't yet heard from loc4me either.

Hi All,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to every one. There has been lots of interest in the SL-6000's and someone has bought a package deal of one of the Sl-6000 and all the accessories. After charging these up I forgot how beautiful the SL-6000 was with it 640x480 screen. For right now I think i am going to hang on to the last 6000 and do a little development myself with it.

If i loose interest again, It will be back up for sale here in the forum again. Thanks again for all the interest.

Would you be interested in doing pdaXrom developement?  if so PM me

Hello Cortez,
will we see this: http://linuxdevices.com/news/NS4429818312.html running on Zaurus? As I understand it, the core technology is done. What is left to do so that we can see some of those nice screenshots in real? I am definitely interested in that GUI they have. It seems to be the step in the right direction as I think the GUI is the essence of PDA...

Thanks for an update,

Peter.

Although they based this on Ubuntu 8.04, it's worth giving it a try. Ubuntu 8.04 for ARM isn't available yet, but I guess it should be doable with Debian Unstable as well.
Depending on the reaction of Late I could try to get this to work. If the Ubuntu MID Edition is the next pdaXrom I don't think it makes any sense if I give it a try.

Maybe Late could throw pdaXrom into the open, so we could help make it a success!

Cheers,
cortez

It is NOT the next pdaxrom... we were trying to work our way in... but hit a road block...
pdaXrom is as OPEN as it gets, I will accept help from anyone! :-)

Ok, I'm going to let the cat out of the bag,

Remember a few months back, I put pdaXrom on hold pending "a new direction"... this was it and but they weren't willing to fund it, due to the pre-maturity of the product. Now, we contemplated just doing it and supporting ourselves through the whole project, but I didnt want to be a step behind UME, because of not being 100% affiliated. So we decided no to go in that direction :-)

I'm honored that anyone would even slightly think about purchasing a zaurus for the project... it sorta brings a tear to my eye :-) But i really fell weird excepting it... If anything, I would rather it just be shipped to me. Instead of transfering funds to me, then I transfer to the buyer. I'm still feeling weird about it.

But thanks! let me know if you need contact information

Good to hear. I thought that pdaXrom was through developing.

Hey the_oak,

We were never through, I just took a short break, I got a promotion at work and I worked just about 16hrs of the day (including weekends) trying to clean up the MESS that was handed to me in my promotion. Now that the fires are out, me and sash talked for a few weeks about building pdaXrom again from the ground up with all new packages and the latest of just about everything, then about 2-3months ago, pdaXrom is born again.

I was actually looking the other day about how I can open up the archives to the public, but I think since the archive are hosted by Sourceforge, you will need an account. But honestly, you not going to see any activity for the past few months, because like I said the only 2 individuals working on the rom is myself and sashz and we speak directly through ICQ or email. But if you want to stay up to date with the current changes, join the list. I'm going to be setting up the SVN to send reports of commits to the mailing list to stay tuned for that.

Late

PS. There may be another open call for developers again in the up coming weeks.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Vpn Connection
« on: June 20, 2008, 08:29:41 am »
neo_com_3,
I haven't used vpn with my Z ever but I have used the rdesktop (RDP) client. It works fine for me, a little small... but it works.
I actually worked on an issue with exhange 2003 over wifi, and the speed was as if I was on a full sized pc. Now when it comes to vpn, you can try vpnc, but I believe it does require some kernel modules to be built for it to function correctly, (sorry I dont know what modules or if they are even built for b3)

Hope this helps

I need to get on the ball with sending updates, I apologize.
Yes, we are still in the works of getting it stable enough to start releasing nightly builds. (more like weekly builds)

Current functional stuff.
USB, SD, CF, Touchscreen, Suspend, Date/Time after reboot, X starts at boot,

Working on
Sound, Xorg, Boot time optimizations,...

I just opened up our pdaxrom-everyone mailing list to the public, You wont see to much traffic on there (hopefully that will change), but if you would like to become involved in pdaxrom please join.
